What clothes are you buying for autumn?

I have spent the past four months in cut off jeans and two summer dresses but yesterday's cold weather made me realise I need some new clothes for autumn/winter.

I know nothing about clothes/fashion and tend to just get my cues from what I see others wearing. I'd love to know what everyone else is getting.

I'm 50, FWIW, and work in a fairly casual office and need clothes for both work and home as for various reasons I didn't have anything new last year.

Please inspire me with what you're buying!

@HoxtHun Our tastes might meet in some areas. I’m sorry I don’t recognise your name. I like lots of different things tbh.

Doggymummar · 24/08/2024 12:50

I bought a mad cardigan from Joanie which is due today and two bras from Boody also due today.

dudsville · 24/08/2024 12:58

I'm not planing on buying anything, simply because I have a wardrobe full of things I love, but I am looking forward to getting into the nice things!

Cantonet · 24/08/2024 14:06

I've just bought amazingly priced slouchy leather tote bags in burgundy & leopard from ebay. They're both 'used' but look perfect. As I trash my bags designer ones are not my thing but autograph leather & the like are.

DeccaM · 24/08/2024 15:16

I bought a few things earlier in the summer that I haven't actually worn yet and which I'm looking forward to wearing. I think they should all be good pieces for layering this autumn:

An oversized striped shirt with a lacey collar
A lovely grey sweatshirt
A short-sleeved pink jumper
A navy top with an orange and tan pattern
A cream top with a subtle black floral pattern

Probably nothing in this list could be considered the height of fashion, but I am happy with them and most were on sale and massively marked down. I'm hoping to avoid buying anything this autumn, with the exception of some new trainers (which I don't really need but want).

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 24/08/2024 16:09

Flared leggings
Corduroy pinafore dress
Denim dress
Wooly tights
Jeans (mom)
Ribbed long sleeve scoop neck tops

Also really wanting a pair of platform kickers boots also a corduroy and some corduroy like sambas

Rina66 · 23/08/2024 17:55

I really want this AllSaints camo leopard shacket but I'm waiting for a 20% off code!

I had a email the other day saying 20% off new collection - think it’s on until Monday

Rina66 · 24/08/2024 17:12

Ah thank you @Waystation, I got the email too, got all excited but guess what, that Shacket isn't included 😂 I think these clothes are priced to be reduced now, but I suppose that's another thread entirely.

EmeraldIsla · 24/08/2024 17:15

I was determined I was going to treat myself to a Jigsaw City Maxi coat, but they seem to have them in now and they’re such dull colours this year. (I wanted the dark red they had last year, and hearing all the tales of burgundy being ‘in’ this year gave me hope.)

I will have to stalk Vinted and eBay. Sure it will pop up eventually.

Meadowfinch · 24/08/2024 17:32

I've got a new job, 3 days a week in the office. I've spent the last three years working at home, wearing bobbly sweaters and thick socks so this is high on my priority list.

So far I'm eyeing up some tweedy wide-legged trousers, a long pleated cotton twill skirt and some ankle boots. I need tops, more trousers and a couple of dresses.

ncforcatquestion · 24/08/2024 17:34

I suppose I'll have to buy some jeans. I've been in shorts or linen crop trousers for months

Snowflake2 · 24/08/2024 17:43

HoxtHun · 23/08/2024 17:36

Sorry!

(I think what I meant was that the OP clearly isn’t entirely remote from what normal people wear. I mean, she isn’t dressing solely from the farm shop or a 200 year old trunk found in her cellar …)

Edited

Now I've got clothes envy for this mythical 200 year old trunk. I want to know what's in it! And if it'll fit me.

LadyRoughDiamond · 24/08/2024 18:04

I really need a proper, ‘good’ raincoat. Have been looking at Rains and Ilse Jacobsen, but am erring towards something cape-style.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2024 18:11

@Meadowfinch You've just reminded me that I bought some tweedy wide legged trousers in the sale in the spring, so I will be wearing those. I'd love to find a dusty pink jumper or blouse to wear with them, or maybe a deep red.

@LadyRoughDiamond My daughter has been for lunch today and was wearing her Rains waterproof. It's lovely and has really tempted me to get one. I've got several raincoats but don't really like any of them.

gardenmusic · 24/08/2024 18:53

I need a french navy, fuchsia or wine 'tank top' as we called them back in the 70's. It would pull a lot of things together.
Long tweedy trousers would be good, too.
I have a Sosander denim skirt that I have been wearing with a tucked in T shirt - I would like to winter-fy it, but cannot tuck in a thick jumper.

Suzuki70 · 24/08/2024 19:01

I've bought these chelsea boots from Grenson and a black wool cape from Zara.

If I'm going to be doing "gothic hunting lodge" as someone else on here described it a la Claudia Winkleman I'll need some kind of skinny fit trousers/leggings. I also want to sell a couple of fairisle jumpers I'm sick of and buy some more.

Look up jumper tuck hack! I do this:

For a clean look across the front, knot your sweater with a hair tie in the back and either flip the “tail” up into the sweater or tuck it inside the back of your jeans.

BobnLen · 24/08/2024 19:42

Some Levi 501 jeans from Amazon, a denim shirt from Next, though not to wear together, I bought a pair of Josef Seibel boots recently for half price at Brantano.

endofthecorridoor · 24/08/2024 19:46

Just bought 2 red tops a sleeveless cardigan and a red chunky cardigan with gold buttons. I'm same adage as OP and natural blonde. Feel like red has been out of fashion for ages but it really suits me especially in winter when I'm pale
It will update my existing wardrobe looks great with wide leg jeans white navy or denim shirts white t shirt leopard print and cream trousers I'm looking forward to a chilly day now .....

gardenmusic · 24/08/2024 20:07

Peaceandquietandacuppa thank you, I can try that with my jeans - the problem with the skirt is that I take up all the space!

You can also make an wide elastic belt to wrap around underneath & hoik it up to the required length. An alternative method is tucking underneath a vest or even a bra but that's a little tricky with a thick itchy jumper.

Where did you get red cardigan from ? I agree, red hasn’t been around fur ages.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2024 21:28

I've been looking for a red cardigan all year and still haven't find one that's right for me.

Bettyboughtabitofbitterbutter · 24/08/2024 21:35

I want a couple of nice skirts to go with tights and biker boots. I'm not into fashion in the slightest so trying to find some quirky non-high street looks that won't break the bank.

Would a cropped jumper solve the problem? If it's waist length it would actually be quite useful e.g. with high+waisted trousers.
