What clothes are you buying for autumn?

I have spent the past four months in cut off jeans and two summer dresses but yesterday's cold weather made me realise I need some new clothes for autumn/winter.

I know nothing about clothes/fashion and tend to just get my cues from what I see others wearing. I'd love to know what everyone else is getting.

I'm 50, FWIW, and work in a fairly casual office and need clothes for both work and home as for various reasons I didn't have anything new last year.

Please inspire me with what you're buying!

I'm keen on the idea of some oxblood boots and a leopard print midi skirt. I'm stalking some such skirts on Vinted, to be worn with a denim shirt

I'm going to get a few jersey dresses, and size up so I can wear thermal tops and leggings underneath. I'm so much more comfortable in dresses rather than jeans and jumpers. I realised that last winter I wore jeans/trousers and jumpers every day, but as soon as I sat on the sofa in the evening, I wanted something soft. So was running up to change. Hoping the dress/thermals combo will see me through the full day!

I've bought a velvet puffer jacket from the Hush sale that I was really annoyed at myself for not buying in the last winter sale. So was dead chuffed to see it pop back up in this sale in my size. I love it, cosy without being heavy.

And I've ordered a velvet dressing gown from Powell Craft. Not arrived yet, so we shall see.

Yes, like George Costanza, I love a bit of velvet.

Just brought a denim skirt .

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2024 20:21

I've got a denim midi skirt but I've hardly worn it over the summer, as it felt too thick. How are people planning on making them work for Autumn?

redtrain123 · 23/08/2024 20:25

Was at Battersea power station and saw a couple my of people wearing them.

One had a Breton - type (ie stripey ) tshirt ,and converse shoes. Can’t remember the other.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2024 20:30

That's how I've worn mine so far, but I see that as more of a (obviously not on a super-hot day) summer look.

theculture · 23/08/2024 20:34

I want to find where to buy a reasonably priced jumper that doesn't go bobbly after one wash!

Every one I have bought in the last few years has been such bad quality - even from old trusted brands . . . .

mynameiscalypso · 23/08/2024 20:42

I've bought a long dark denim maxi skirt from M&S and some wonderful rust-coloured cords from Poetry. I want to buy a nice cream jumper but haven't found the perfect one yet.

Lifeomars · 23/08/2024 21:09

I am after a new coat but it needs to be from M and S as I have a credit note and a gift voucher which if added together should be enough to cover the cost. Have decided to get a coat rather than fritter it away on bits and bobs which is one of my bad traits! Waiting for them to get their new season stock in.

Presumably if you like The White Company you’re happy with normal fairly muted mainstream trickled down fashion?

I have never felt so guilty for liking normcore!😂

Hahaha @CharlotteRumpling you made me laugh!

I always get in trouble on Mumsnet for phrasing things wrongly. I just filter it out.

Loving everyone's suggestions.

That website looks great @NeverStopShopping thank you.

And I shall study that thread @redtrain123 - I did a quick search before posting my own thread but didn't see that one!

Well I don't need anything. I have all styles of boots. I already bought a new coat on sale. I am retired so just wear jeans and cashmere all winter. So lazy. I do love a coat though and now have about 10 of them. I'm going to try to not buy anything.

Sorry!

(I think what I meant was that the OP clearly isn’t entirely remote from what normal people wear. I mean, she isn’t dressing solely from the farm shop or a 200 year old trunk found in her cellar …)

Edited

Love the idea of dressing solely from a 200 year old trunk & a farm shop! Floaty Jane Austen dresses with chunky boots and a gillet, right on trend

Barney16 · 23/08/2024 23:59

The plan was nothing, as I have far too many clothes but, have just bought a light brown cardigan from Marks. It's lovely but the buttons are awful, so I'm going to replace. They have some lovely bits and pieces but my wardrobes are filled with nice "bits and pieces" going to do a big clear out and put stuff on vinted.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 24/08/2024 00:32

Oooh good thread

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2024 09:31

A 200 year old trunk and a farm shop pretty much sums up most of my outfits in the late 80s and early 90s.

Late August always makes me yearn for an 80s style checked pencil skirt with either splits or kick pleats.

OllyBJolly · 24/08/2024 09:36

@Perfectlystill I've had an email saying White Company is 20% off everything in store for the bank holiday weekend.

HoxtHun · 24/08/2024 09:43

Well you can’t be me, @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, as we generally seem to have opposing tastes in clothes - but that was pretty much my wardrobe too over exactly those years! Actual farm shop for home wear and Droopy and Browns (huge puffed sleeve Tattersall shirts and ankle length grey flannel skirts) for ‘out’. Probably still unconsciously trying to replicate that look (and those days).

RosesAndHellebores · 24/08/2024 09:55

M&S have just bought out a slightly textured, well cut black jacket, the same as the cream and navy ones they had in the summer and that I blinked and missed. £59 and it will be waiting for me when I get home from holiday. I have also ordered the Whistles slim jacket in navy with 15% off this morning.

This will be my last winter at work so I am only buying stuff that I'll wear once retired. M&S have a nice denim dress with a zip at the front and White Stuff a nice V neck soft cord dress. I really want to see them before buying but might just wing it. I won't return to the UK until mid September and won't have time to shop.

I'd also like a warm, waterproof but light thigh length jacket for day to day. Something that's comfy in the car, with a bit of shape and no hood. Preferably in a dark grey so it works with black or navy.

I think 70s is the way to go with a denim skirt. Long boots, ribbed/ roll neck jumper, long coat. Think Ali McGraw in Love Story. Not sure if it's on trend but it's a good look.

A great look for the tall and slim but I’m a short size 14. I do have some great 70s-esque boots that I can try it with though and I love a roll neck black jumper.
