Hi

I’m plus size really struggling with my confidence and with fashion /knowing what to wear and with what looks good .

I have mostly been struggling since having my son .i feel so self conscious and like I’m never “put together “which I hate not being. I feel frumpy and it’s making me anxious when going out because people must think I don’t care about how I look ..I want to make more effort with my appearance and be more confldent for my son’s sake .So was just wandering if you any tips /tricks for confidence as a plus size lady .As I said earlier I’m terrible with fashion and knowing what looks good etc .so would really appreciate some good fashion advice and some outfit idea for spring , summer , autumn and winter as I simply don’t know what I’m doing and therefore tend to look messy/frumpy day to day which I hate .
I really love country style clothes, floral clothes and dresses but can’t seem make myself look put together and as though I’ve made an effort which is really important to me .i also have a big bust that I often feel self conscious about .

So i Really need cute plus size outfits
Please put idea ,inspiration and photos below if you are comfortable

I love dresses ,skirts mainly but will wear skinny jeans .I love floral patterns and country style fashion but open to other styles to .

Also I’m not on a huge budget so preferably budget friendly
For reference I’m 25 ,5 foot 5 and size 18-22

Hi there @anxiousmum1998 ! How old is your son? I'm assuming a baby or a little child? I hear you, I just had my DC2 and it's very hard for me to put any effort in my looks! I compare myself constantly to ideals so... I can never win 😂
If you say you don't know about fashion or what looks good on you, I may have some advice but please do take it with caution because I've been into so many rabbit holes with this! Look into Kybbe styles: a system that takes into consideration your shape to help you with finding styles that suit you. Warning: there's a lot of woowoo too, so I just took some basic concepts and it's been useful when I look for clothes. It can be a starting point. Luckily for you, you're a mother, so you won't have so much time to ruminate about shallow things, as I did when I found Kybbe (was not a mum then 😂)
Good luck!

Hello, glad you found us!

Have you had a look on vinted by typing in western? I also love the western/boho aesthetic!

I suggest looking at the websites free people, boot barn (us but ships to uk) and looking at the outfits on those sites and recreating them with brands from the UK.

Do you have a plaid shirt you can use to make into a cute little tie at waist shirt?

Check out miranda lambert for her fashion choices, I adore her dress sense.

Floral dresses are quite popular on vinted and Ebay, style with cowgirl boots or some chunky western sandals.

Youre 10 years younger than I am and I wasted 10 years not wearing clothes I liked because I felt too big to enjoy fashion, please don't be like me, enjoy dressing how you want to!

A denim shirt or jacket goes lovely over a floral dress.
Those flippy puffy skirts with a band t shirt and boots.
Shein has really budget friendly jewellery for western looks, the silver and turquoise stones? Have a Google search of the cowgirl jewellery and see if you can get it ebay or vinted, such as the chunky silver cuffs.

Boohoo/asos/nasty gal/simply be have great things come up but they're not always great on a budget so wait for sales and flash sales.

River island has had tons of western fashion the last few years so definitely do check those on ebay/vinted.

If you have Pinterest have a look at western fashion plus size and try recreating looks from there.

But I can't stress enough look at the fashion on boot barn and try recreating with preloved clothes and stop worrying about feeling "pulled together", if you're leaning into a rockstar look then you need a more unbothered attitude!

These would be my top things to get starting a western wardrobe.

Paisley prints - camisole maybe?
Aztec prints.
Flared jeans.
Demin shorts/shirt/jacket.
Cowgirl boots.
Flippy boho skirt.
Oversized white shirt.
Floral midi dress.
Floral maxi dress.
Western buckled sandals.
Western buckle belt.
Oversized hobo handbag.
I'd get a mens chequered shirt to wear with the denim and maybe pair with some band t shirts.
Some silver and blue Stone bracelets and maybe a choker, I'll try and find a link to the style I mean if I get a chance later and but please if you've found a style you love, go for it!

@Lwrenn i'm so sorry you had to put up with that shit💐! It's easy to say oh you should have said this or that in reply, but it's not like that in the moment. She is a cunt, there's a lot of them about. I hope you are doing ok today❤️. Loving the sound of the sparkly eyeshadow. I have work in an hour so i'm in my usual bright as I can eye makeup.

Remember everyone we all deserve to be happy no matter our shape or size, we are more than that despite what people say!
Have a great day everyone❤️.

@MsNeis : “I bet she was envious of your bright light: it may sound cheesy, but envy is so obvious once you learn to recognize it! For us, having learnt that our bodies are not "socially accepted", it may be hard to imagine being the target of envy but trust me: that awful person was sick with it.”

This is very wise. We’re lucky enough to have got to ‘know‘ you, @Lwrenn , on this thread, and your posts are warm, engaging, vibrant and humane. That woman couldn’t help but recognise that in you when you smiled at her, and if she wishes she could be more like that, there’s the envy right there. What person comfortable in their own skin would respond as she did to a smile, for goodness’ sake?

Evenstar · 07/08/2024 16:13

I think we have been learning to look at ourselves with kindness on here, if you give it some thought if you have a family member or friend who is plus size then you see them through the lens of your love for them and you don’t think less of them.

Sadly there are people who don’t think that way.

Dollyparot200 · 07/08/2024 16:30

@Lwrenn I'm so sorry that happened what an absolute arsehole to say that to someone, she absolutely does not matter she must be all twisted inside to act like that.

Hi friends 🤗

It feels so daft to post this when we've other pals on sections of this site scared to leave their homes but I went out yesterday and some lady in passing, maybe 10 years or so older than me in gym gear looked at me, I'm a smiley type so I smiled and she just said, "you need to go on a diet" but smiled back as she said it. It was so shocking. I didn't say anything because I just felt stupid. I ran back to the car (dp was feeding the baby) and burst into tears. It's been on of my first day's out properly since my stomach has healed. It was only at the local shop.
Dp was livid. He wanted to say something to her but what do you say, "excuse me miss, that wasn't nice?" 😂 I think she was aware it wasn't!
Anyway I thought I looked cool yesterday anyway so sod her and her mean girl attitude!

I hope everyone is well and slaying x

OMG! How dare she! Who does she think she is!?! I'm someone with no filter. I would have totally gone for her.
Women like that are unhappy in all aspects of their lives. She's clearly miserable, and doesnt like to see other women happy, confident and loved. She's so not worth it.

Somethingsnappy · 07/08/2024 18:06

Lwrenn, I agree with the above post. People who are happy and confident in themselves simply don't make derogatory comments to others like this. Confident happy people tend to see the best in others, and don't notice or judge people's perceived imperfections. That woman was almost certainly very unhappy or insecure in her life, and gained two seconds' pleasure in trying to hurt someone else, or make them feel as rubbish as her. I'd also go as far as saying people like that are possibly/probably mentally unwell. In my experience, it's just not 'normal' to think things like that, let alone say them.

I remember hearing or reading something years ago that stuck with me. If I remember correctly, it was a woman from an African country (forgotten which country now) saying that she just couldn't get her head around the obsession with body image in some other parts of the world. She said that in her country it just wasn't a thing to worry about being fat or thin, or whatever. She asked if we'd look around at trees and compare them... 'Look this one is so small/big/wide/thin compared to that one over there!' for example. She said we don't do it with trees, why do we do it with people? We're all different. The concept was alien to her.
It always stayed with me x

Lwrenn · 07/08/2024 18:22

Thank you so much girls! I feel much better for your words, I'm too embarrassed to tell my friends in real life. I think they'd be quite surprised I didn't respond but it was just a shock. I went to the same shop today so it hasn't put me off going back again or out and about which it might have done years ago but I feel absolutely fine today.

Thanks for taking the time to be so supportive and kind to me. It really means a lot x

LettuceTruss · 07/08/2024 23:39

@Lwrenn I’m so sorry that woman was vile. What gives people the right to say these things? I’m currently living in Central Europe and was out at my local pizzeria the other night. A couple on the next table were discussing my pizza and why had I ordered a big one, wasn’t I big enough? Unfortunately I understood their language, so when I left, I smiled at them and said “I hope you’re enjoying your pizza and this lovely evening.” One went bright red and the other mumbled something. I think I made them squirm a bit. So many people assume that Brits can only speak English.

LettuceTruss · 07/08/2024 23:41

I’m loving this chat. I bought a bright orange linen shirt dress from Live Unlimited when I was last in London. I think I’ll wear it tomorrow to the office to cheer things up. Possibly with my sparkly lobster necklace.

Ooh I love that idea! I love fun jewellery, I'm not sure if you've ever seen Mel schilling a married at first sight expert? She has some of the most amazing jewellery I've ever seen! Butler and Wilson I think it's from. Gorgeous stuff! 🦞🦑

I'm so sorry that happened to you, it takes so much as a plus sized person to eat out and you get these pricks ruining it.

I walked out on a date 15 or so years ago now, he made a joke at the girls on the next table expense, lovely girls all plus sized just ordering food having fun and it just made me feel pure ick and rage so I got up and left 😂

Deathraystare · 08/08/2024 11:06

I recently bought a big white shirt and a pair of green patterned trousers from Simply Be. I am very happy with both.

TragicMuse · 08/08/2024 12:50

Today I am wearing dark orange wide leg trousers and a white vest top. Tucked in.

My arms are not toned and I simply don't care!

I feel neither super-confident nor self-effacing. It's just a body. Nothing else. It (mostly) works and I inhabit it. That's all.

I don't always feel like this!

Hecatoncheires · 08/08/2024 13:15

@Lwrenn You know that saying: "blowing out someone else's candle won't make your own burn brighter"? Well, you and this lovely thread and all the supportive people on it are the very opposite of that. These threads are oxygen to our candles, so we burn bright and proud and fabulous and shine in our plus-size togs. I've been inspired to wear nice things and, more importantly, feel that I deserve the nice things. I know I'm still large but, fuck me, I feel better in my lovely clothes and with my shining smile. What a wonderful thing that has been created! And that was your doing. So you just keep this in your mind and revel in it. 💐

Lwrenn · 08/08/2024 19:45

Loving these updates! Shining smile! That's beautiful 😍

OhRex · 10/08/2024 16:31

Oh my life @Lwrenn i just can’t believe some people! That is a f@&king horrible thing to say to someone. Sending you love and happy fatty vibes.
On holiday and loving seeing the fact the non-English people really don’t give two hoots about ‘flattering’ and ‘slimming’ and ‘suitable for curvy’ clothes. They are wearing whatever swimmers they want and whatever dresses they like in the evening! Is it a very British pastime to be consumed with weight?

Ooh holiday, lovely! I'm so happy you've gone somewhere nice! Fatty happy vibes, I love that 😂
We went to Wales on our last get away and nobody seemed remotely bothered about size. Bigger lasses swam, bigger fellas sunbathed with no shirt. It was ace 😂

I actually have a very strange little update regarding the woman who said that.
My dp was telling his friend about what had happened during their catch up and she told DP in the same shop a few weeks prior a woman had said something about her being fat (and she's not at all!) So she'd just put it down to her being mentally unwell, because like with what happened to me, the woman smiled at dps lovely friend as she said it. Dp is convinced it's the same woman who maybe has some problems.
We don't live in the greatest of areas so if it is a mental health issue I hope she doesn't get anyone responding with a kick off. Which isn't out the realms of possibility because I've seen grown ups scrap over the last brownies in a lidl bakery (whilst not normal behaviour I don't think it's unjustified 😂) so I hope if she isn't just a horror she stays safe.

I hope you're having an excellent holiday! X

Soccermumamir · 12/08/2024 08:02

Ooh loving the sound of the lobster necklace 😊🦞 We're back from our holiday today. Its been amazing to see everyone of different shapes and sizes just enjoying themselves! I've lived in my maxi skirts, which I've become obsessed with this summer lol 😆 So floaty and freeing 😊
Hope everyone has a lovely week and keep being your gorgeous selves 😘

Aww thank you 🙂 It's thanks to this thread. I wouldn't of dreamt putting pictures on as I'm too self conscious, but this summer I thought....forget it. I'm doing and wearing what I want and I'm gonna enjoy every minute of it 🙂 I'm so glad you're loving maxi skirts too. Curves are fab 🤘
