Do vest tops (on women) look cheap/tacky ?

moneyandbigteeth · 23/05/2024 11:50

This will be to wear on holiday abroad. I think certain colours can look cheap (some tackier shades of pink?)
I have brought a thick strapped, soft feel, white ribbed top from M&S (cant find it online to link here). I plan to wear it with shorts.
Thoughts ?

@moneyandbigteeth the least bit overweight and it will look hideous!

RuledbytheWashingMachine · 23/05/2024 11:55

Is this a serious question?

A white vest is a summer wardrobe stable. Brilliant for layering too.

Not tacky and certainly not just for those of us who are size 8.

WhereAreWeNow · 23/05/2024 11:55

I hope not since that's pretty much all I ever wear on my top half once the temperature goes over 25 degrees.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 23/05/2024 11:57

They definitely can do. I think a vest with spaghetti straps and uncoordinated bra straps showing always looks naff. What you've chosen looks like a vest nobody would notice for any reason - it's standard summer wear for most women.

I don't agree that being overweight is a reason not to have bare arms. I mean, nobody thinks an overweight person must have slim arms if they can't see them.

Depends on the quality. The one in the photo looks good. Those cheap ones from Primark that cling to your belly are the ones to avoid. And wear a strapless bra!

Jeannne92 · 23/05/2024 12:05

The one in the photo is nice.

What's not nice is sunburns and white clothes that have gone grey or yellow or clothes that don't fit.

THIS !

Totally agree on the quality. And yes, thin straps with bra straps showing looks cheap, even more so if the bra was white but has now gone grey over time.

I've never worn a vest top out in the summer, apart from the garden !

Re-vamping my wardrobe for my holiday this year

A vest top like in the picture is totally fine. I wouldn't wear it as it would look terrible on me, but I wouldn't think twice about someone else wearing such a top on holiday or for a casual activity.

But definitely not the same as a spaghetti strapped vst with no bra or bra straps hugely on show (obviously, different if worn over a bikini at beach/pool).

NashvilleQueen · 23/05/2024 12:34

@allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld great. Fat women cover up lest your arms offend the world.

OvaHere · 23/05/2024 12:42

I have that M&S ribbed top in khaki green. I'm larger with big boobs, I wore it on holiday recently with cropped trousers and wide leg linen trousers. I also wore an open shirt over the top sometimes.

I thought it looked nice not hideous. It's a decently cut top in quality material although it has slightly bobbled in a couple of places after a few wears (mostly where my crossbody bag strap was).

All my vest tops come from Primark and they dont cling anywhere as long as you buy them in the right size! This is pretty much true of any brand, no matter how expensive or cheap...just dont buy them too small!

A classic white vest top is absolutely a staple though, wether its for summer wear or for layering.

I’m fat and I gleefully wear crop tops with shorts in the summer because I want to be comfy. Hideous as that may be 🙂

WeRateSquirrels · 23/05/2024 12:59

I think fine, as long as it's good quality and fits well. Couldn't personally be bothered due to the amount of suncream I'd need to put on my shoulders.

I think everyone should bare their arms (if they want to).

CointreauVersial · 23/05/2024 13:02

In my opinion......

Vest tops have the potential to look a bit naff, if:

Too tight/don't fit
Thin, skimpy, clingy fabric
Wrong underwear (lumpy bra, straps showing)
Worn with too-tight bottom half

Looks great, if:

Good fit, not too clingy
Sturdy, thick fabric (ribbed looks nice)
Strapless bra.....or buy the fabulous vests from Uniqlo with a bra built in!
Worn with flowy skirts, wide-leg trousers, loose shorts

It has nothing to do with your weight. Having a looser bottom half is mostly about balance, but of course, plenty of people look good whatever they wear.

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 23/05/2024 14:22

It's a good vest top.

That particular vest can also be worn with an actual bra rather than the strapless torture devices recommended here (I'm 34 GG and I'd rather be comfortable than care about the "Ooh, strap!" Fashion Police. Not that you'll have that issue with this vest)

Lovemusic82 · 23/05/2024 14:38

I wear them a lot. My weight changes quite a lot and the first place I gain is the top of my arms, so when I gain weight I only wear them when layered with other things. When my weights ok I wear them more often. I’m a size 12 with small boobs. The ribbed ones look much better than the plain ones. I don’t think they look tacky if worn correctly.

GingerPirate · 23/05/2024 14:53

Depends what vest tops and what women.
Full stop.

MN thinks overweight woman should ideally not exist but if they do they should stay inside wearing a burlap sack and starve until they are deemed acceptable to be out in public. Basically...

mitogoshi · 23/05/2024 14:54

Absolutely fine as long as it's not too tight as in your correct size. I myself am guilty of buying a size too small and it makes you look bigger

SuncreamAndIceCream · 23/05/2024 14:55

I have loads of those M&S vests OP

Great for layering any time of the year and they come into their own in summer

I think the trick to avoid looking tacky is no visible bra strap and those vests do nicely.

3WildOnes · 23/05/2024 14:56

I dont think cotton ones look great unless you are very young and very slim. Silk ones with no visible bra look much nicer imo.

This websites’ obsession with thinness is worrying.
