Do vest tops (on women) look cheap/tacky ?

moneyandbigteeth · 23/05/2024 11:50

This will be to wear on holiday abroad. I think certain colours can look cheap (some tackier shades of pink?)
I have brought a thick strapped, soft feel, white ribbed top from M&S (cant find it online to link here). I plan to wear it with shorts.
Thoughts ?

t-shirts can be extremely frumpy. (IMO)

@Nap1983 interesting take. Are t-shirts frumpy on men too IYO?

Depends on the fit, can be. But were not talking about men so i really dont know why your asking. Usually men and women wear different styles and fits. Would have asked about men if id said a style of dress was frumpy? And you'll notice i used the words CAN BE in my original post

FcukTheDay · 23/05/2024 17:34

It's a lovely top! In fact, me a size 14 wore it today, can you believe it! Arms out and everything.

I do apologise if you had to witness this and will of course help towards therapy costs so that the mental picture can be scrubbed from your mind ;)

MidnightMeltdown · 23/05/2024 17:49

@Nap1983

Obviously not because men don't tend to wear dresses.

I was just curious. It seems rather strange to declare that an entire category of clothing is frumpy. It's bit like saying that trousers are frumpy.

Yes they CAN BE frumpy, but individual items from pretty much any category of clothing CAN BE frumpy, so it's a totally meaningless statement.

Dopaminefuelled · 23/05/2024 17:54

I have that one in navy and black.
I'm size 16, sizeable boobs. Looks good with my looser high waisted trousers. I'm very conscious of my belly fat and it honestly looks fine. I did have it in white but I find it too see through for me on the boobs but might be more to do with what bra you wear underneath.

@moneyandbigteeth the least bit overweight and it will look hideous!

With posts like this, I sometimes wish Mumsnet would introduce an 'eye roll' thing to click on (in addition to the 'thanks' one)

I'd have used it on the declaration that t-shirts are frumpy, too. They're clothes. Just perfectly normal everyday clothes.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 23/05/2024 18:11

They look great if you're slim with toned arms.

Pickledprawn · 23/05/2024 18:11

Gosh I'm surprised at these responses I think it's a perfectly normal top to wear completely inoffensive. Wtf with the comments about bra straps too? God forbid a woman is wearing a bra (shock horror)!

Cantonet · 23/05/2024 18:12

Primark is the only place in my town I can find 100% cotton vests that don't cling - the Rita ora ones ( I'm 60 & a size 14 & wear a large) The M&S ones I've tried on cling because of the Lycra.
I live in my white vests & like to show a bit of shoulder when wearing them underneath jumpers/cardigans.

SlovenlyOldSlut · 23/05/2024 18:24

I think everyone should bare their arms (if they want to).

That’s why, in the US, the right to bare arms is written into the Constitution.

And another comment that deserves the eye roll

Auburngal · 23/05/2024 18:52

I can’t wear vest tops anymore as badly burnt shoulders as a kid. Feel the heat instantly if wearing.

I find vest tops tacky if women can’t find a bra that is concealed by it.

NerrSnerr · 23/05/2024 18:56

If you're judging a woman by the size of her arms in a particular top or her bra strap being on show it says a lot more about you than the woman in the vest top.

well, Im slim with toned arms.....Ive also lost a huge amount of weight and have really noticeable loose skin on my upper arms (and everywhere TBH!).
If it gets hot enough I plan on breaking out the vest tops and if people dont like my wrinkly, baggy arms then its just going to have to be their problem!

mdinbc · 23/05/2024 19:11

As a Canadian, I'm fairly baffled by this conversation. They are normal summer casual wear, found in just about every store in a variety of colours. I wore a black one yesterday with khaki cargoes and birkenstocks since the sun was shining.

As for what bra to wear, choose a cross back style, a sports bra, or bralette with Y-shaped back.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/05/2024 19:22

I have a pink one and wear it with a skirt

D20 · 23/05/2024 19:52

I’m wearing one right now under a jumper. Funnily enough I was going to start the controversial bra straps under a vest top thread earlier. This one has a very slight racer front/back and, as I knew it wasn’t going to be on show, I put on a lacy bra with very small cap sleeves. The straps were definitely on show but it looked purposeful in a Free People kind a way.

I’ve been on the lookout for a comfortable racer back bra - I think I must need extra long straps or something because racer back bras are rarely comfortable for me and I’ve tried those converter plastic widgets too.

Do you ever see a local wearing them? On the continent they tend to be worn as an undergarment. We wear them to keep warm. Especially if it’s the ribbed variety. And yes, I have them and do wear them, but never on holiday or when it’s really hot outside, because they do nothing to cool you down, you just burn and boil at the same time.
The TShirts available in the UK are made with thick cotton generally, of course you boil in them, but they are lovely for 20 odd degrees.
That’s why we go on holiday, buy something amazing, but we can never wear it back home.

I wear shirts (cotton or linen) for high temperatures, with linen trousers or skirts. I’d only wear shorts if I’m cycling. It’s a myth that vests and shorts keep you cool, not the vests and shirts we buy in the UK, they’re way too thick for 30 degrees.

And yes, vests and shorts scream British tourists. Nothing wrong with that, but my mother despairs and tells my DD off about it. So somewhere in a doorway, a nonna will judge you for not knowing how to dress for the weather 😂😂😂, that’s if you care.

I see locals who wear tiny string bikinis and speedos at all ages and sizes. I see locals who look 20 years older than me at the same age due to sun exposure. I see locals my age wearing a lot of black, infact the uniform appears to be black or denim mum jeans or skinnys with a black vest top. I see local teens looking like the local version of the Instagram alike British 13 year olds, all eyebrows, crop tops and Nike. I see alot of locals in the wide boy gucci tracksuits like in Britain.
I hate these kind of answers. The difference is these locals don't appear to give a shit about what anyone thinks about them. A certain type of brit loves nothing more than judging others, these Brits are the ones who stand out by a mile, just as much as the typical British tourist they love to spout about.

tkwal · 23/05/2024 20:05

Anything can look fantastic on someone with an innate sense of style and a clue on how to accessorise, no matter their size. The vest in the picture looks well made and in a decent fabric plus it probably comes in a range of colours. I wouldn't think twice about wearing it.
Fast fashion can also look wonderful and stylish on anyone size 12 and under and only for the first couple of times it's worn...but then that's the whole idea behind it.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 23/05/2024 20:30

Dopaminefuelled · 23/05/2024 18:48

Why? It's just my opinion. I think lots of clothing items look crap on larger people. I used to be very slim and am now fat. I don't tend to wear vest tops amongst other things as they're not flattering. Other people can wear what ever they like.

EdithArtois · 23/05/2024 20:30

@allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld what should fat people wear in summer then. What would you deem acceptable. Pray tell I’m all ears.

Aren't people wearing them for comfort when it's hot? Doesn't matter what size you are. I would never consider them tacky, anymore than I would consider shorts tacky. Just normal summer wear.

WickerMam · 23/05/2024 20:46

I (40s) wear these almost every day, as a layer under a tshirt or jumper. In fact, the only time I don't wear one is if it's 30 degrees out.

I would look awful in one on its own now, but I think a plain black or white vest with jeans is a great, classic look.

Vest with shorts is a touristy look, but then so is anything with shorts.

itsmylife7 · 23/05/2024 20:59

NerrSnerr · 23/05/2024 15:34

If you like them then wear them.

I just think that if people judge me for wearing a vest top that's the wrong fabric, or with the wrong bra or because i'm too fat they have far too much time on their hands.

People would be much happier if they wore what they wanted and stopped judging others for what they wear.

Absolutely spot on.

All this judgement of what Women wear...maybe the "watchers " need to get a life.
