Do vest tops (on women) look cheap/tacky ?

This will be to wear on holiday abroad. I think certain colours can look cheap (some tackier shades of pink?)
I have brought a thick strapped, soft feel, white ribbed top from M&S (cant find it online to link here). I plan to wear it with shorts.
Thoughts ?

Only wear them with a shirt over as I hate my huge arms! On a diet though at the moment hopefully they will shrink!

I don't see why wearing a concealed bra or a bra at all matters.

I hate wearing bras unless necessary. I look good without.

This entire thread has flummoxed me as someone who lives in a very hot country and wears a vest top pretty much every day. As does everyone else. Old, young, all shapes and sizes, locals and tourists alike. Surely this is just standard basic clothing?

Hmmm... there seems to be quite a few people on this thread who are getting upset about other posters not liking vest tops. This is literally a thread where people have been invited to give their opinion on vest tops, so if you're going to get offended by someone giving an opinion, or saying that they think they look cheap and tacky, then you probably shouldn't read the thread!

Personally, I have a couple of cami type tops that I wear underneath things, but I haven't owned a vest top to wear on it's own as casual wear since I was my early 20s. It just hasn't occurred to me to buy any. Probably because we don't usually have the climate for them in England. If it is exceptionally sunny, then I'd wear a sleeveless dress or shorts, but I'd want my shoulders covered if I was wearing shorts. In my 20s I might have worn a vest top with shorts, but in my 30s I think I'd feel like it was too much skin on display. Might wear it in the garden or on the beach though.

I think they look cheap when they lack structural integrity.
I wear the Boden 'Double Layer Front Vest' which hides your bra straps and is structured and thick enough to give you a smooth silhouette.

I honestly had no idea that shorts and a vest might be a faux pas. That's what I wear most days in the summer - not to work but at weekends and holidays.

@moneyandbigteeth the least bit overweight and it will look hideous!

To everyone giving allthe a hard time, she is likely overweight herself and giving her lived opinion. I’m overweight and don’t like vest tops on me, but think they look fine on everyone else. People are often harder on themselves than others.

All of mine would be showing if I wore one, my chest piece and multiple on both my arms, not to mention my huuge bingo wings and hairy armpits!

I own loads of vest tops, even though I don't really wear them, but I have to say this thread is really making me want to start wearing them as a fuck you to all the cries of you shouldn't wear them because you are fat/hairy/tattooed and old!

Do it!

henlake7 · 24/05/2024 09:17

Having spent the last several years in leggings and long tunic tops because I was a massive fatty (and sweating my tits off) I honestly wish I had cared less and just worn vest tops!
Also bear in mind that not everybody can afford a holiday or two every year to wear their skimpy clothing and enjoy the sunshine so it makes sense that if you get even the smallest hint of sunshine in the UK you are going to break out the vests and shorts and bask in it!

I see all sorts in my local high st from very modest dressing to cycling shorts and vest tops....I love to see people doing their own thing regardless of what anybody else thinks.
(my one tiny complaint is that I wish people didnt gravitate towards black all the time. There is too much black for my liking!)

IndecentPropolis · 24/05/2024 09:32

They’re great. I got a white one a couple of weeks ago and it’s so nice I made a special trip yesterday to pick up some more.

I’m probably not quite thin enough to deserve to wear one according to the Mumsnet rules but I couldn’t give a stuff.

TeenLifeMum · 24/05/2024 09:37

I really don’t have this level of energy to judge other people’s clothing - a vest top is a staple for summer whatever your size. I’ve never looked at a woman and thought “look are the size of her arms!” Do people actually do that? My only caveat is to check if you can see the tummy button shape. If yes, go up a size.
