Do vest tops (on women) look cheap/tacky ?

moneyandbigteeth · 23/05/2024 11:50

This will be to wear on holiday abroad. I think certain colours can look cheap (some tackier shades of pink?)
I have brought a thick strapped, soft feel, white ribbed top from M&S (cant find it online to link here). I plan to wear it with shorts.
Thoughts ?

Love them, a staple of my warm weather wardrobe. I think they really balance out a flowy skirt or wide-leg trousers.

No different than any other article of clothing: find the right size and material that flatters you.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/05/2024 15:10

I think they're ok, but if you've got large arms then that style of vest can look a bit butch.

In white in particular it makes me think 'wife beater vest'

@moneyandbigteeth the least bit overweight and it will look hideous!

Wow, thanks. What do you suggest us fatties wear in summer time? A tarp?

ShutTheFrigdeDoor · 23/05/2024 15:15

Never heard the opinion that sleeveless tops or vests are tacky. It's a basic style of top.

sproutsandparsnips · 23/05/2024 15:22

I wear vest tops like these and also slightly looser ones (I tHink there's a term for them but can't remember it). I am a bit overweight and I have particularly large upper arms and a broad back.

And those of us who are not a size 8 don't give a flying fuck what some people think.

You don't know me and will probably never see me again so why should I take the slightest notice of your opinion?

NerrSnerr · 23/05/2024 15:34

If you like them then wear them.

I just think that if people judge me for wearing a vest top that's the wrong fabric, or with the wrong bra or because i'm too fat they have far too much time on their hands.

People would be much happier if they wore what they wanted and stopped judging others for what they wear.

I've never heard it either. Glad I've always just worn what the hell I want 😂

Nap1983 · 23/05/2024 15:55

Im unsure what other style of top you would wear in the heat… I do prefer thicker strapped ones as i cant go braless or strapless.

OlympicPimples · 23/05/2024 15:56

I am vast of boob on a short body, so I don’t wear this kind of top - it just looks like I’m saying “and here’s my BOOBS everyone!” I really wish I could as they’re ideal in warm weather. I’ve tried all types, even the thicker straps/good quality material and it’s a no-no😟

BuddhaAtSea · 23/05/2024 15:58

Do you ever see a local wearing them? On the continent they tend to be worn as an undergarment. We wear them to keep warm. Especially if it’s the ribbed variety. And yes, I have them and do wear them, but never on holiday or when it’s really hot outside, because they do nothing to cool you down, you just burn and boil at the same time.
The TShirts available in the UK are made with thick cotton generally, of course you boil in them, but they are lovely for 20 odd degrees.
That’s why we go on holiday, buy something amazing, but we can never wear it back home.

I wear shirts (cotton or linen) for high temperatures, with linen trousers or skirts. I’d only wear shorts if I’m cycling. It’s a myth that vests and shorts keep you cool, not the vests and shirts we buy in the UK, they’re way too thick for 30 degrees.

And yes, vests and shorts scream British tourists. Nothing wrong with that, but my mother despairs and tells my DD off about it. So somewhere in a doorway, a nonna will judge you for not knowing how to dress for the weather 😂😂😂, that’s if you care.

PickAChew · 23/05/2024 15:59

It looks like a perfectly normal summer top. The only reason I wouldn't wear it is that I burn on a cloudy day in Northern England so prefer to cover up as much as is comfortable.

In my opinion......

Vest tops have the potential to look a bit naff, if:

Too tight/don't fit
Thin, skimpy, clingy fabric
Wrong underwear (lumpy bra, straps showing)
Worn with too-tight bottom half

Looks great, if:

Good fit, not too clingy
Sturdy, thick fabric (ribbed looks nice)
Strapless bra.....or buy the fabulous vests from Uniqlo with a bra built in!
Worn with flowy skirts, wide-leg trousers, loose shorts

It has nothing to do with your weight. Having a looser bottom half is mostly about balance, but of course, plenty of people look good whatever they wear.

Bib boobs are not good in strapless bras!

Cattery · 23/05/2024 16:00

Fine on holiday; it’s a nice top. Wouldn’t wear it here to go shopping tho

Jeez, talk about judging.

I'm local to my home town funnily enough and wear them all the time, can you be a 'British Tourist' at home I wonder?

You’re brave! I am self conscious of my upper arms and wouldn’t wear sleeveless tops unless I also wear a shirt with them

TorturedPoets · 23/05/2024 16:06

I wear them often. Pps are right that they need to be good quality. Also they are one of the few things that I iron as that makes a difference.

bringbacksideburns · 23/05/2024 16:07

I have a couple of these but what are the best bras? Would you say a bra from Lounge? They seem to do a nice one with straps that can be crossed over at the back.

The bra issue is bugging me with these tops.

muddyford · 23/05/2024 16:07

Nowhere near as tacky as seeing a bloke out and about in a vest.

😂 you can do whatever you want. I’m talking about the heat in Spain or Italy, you’re talking to me about British summer, two very different things 😆

Seriously? I'm a size 16/18 and I wear those kind of tops all year round. With a cardi in the winter and on their own in the summer. IDGAF if people think I look "hideous".

BeeCucumber · 23/05/2024 16:15

These tops are great for layering but I would never wear anything sleeveless in a hot weather, as I do not want to get sunburnt and wearing a light cotton dress or top is a lot cooler.

A normal t-shirt? 🤔

Exposing your shoulders to the sun isn't likely to keep you cooler.

fair enough. I feel a vest top keeps me cooler, and t-shirts can be extremely frumpy. (IMO)

@Nap1983 interesting take. Are t-shirts frumpy on men too IYO?
