I'm looking for inspiration. Thanks.

A lot of the clothes in this thread seem to have been mail-ordered- which I'm not knocking, I do that myself too. But the joy of spending a day browsing round stores, trying things on and getting second opinions from sales staff seems to have almost gone. I thought us Boomers and Gen X ers were still wedded to shopping in store, but maybe not.

I went shopping in store the other day. It was honestly really frustrating. The selections in store are limited and so many places are online only now.

I hate online shopping. I much prefer to see, feel and try on clothes before buying.

Not this Boomer - I hardly ever shop in store. I rarely see anything I like, and online shopping is much easier. Plus there is the bonus of actually getting a parcel in the mail!

I swear the mirrors in stores have some sort of fault. I always look huge, but if I end up buying something it looked fine in my own mirror (maybe mine is the one with the fault!). I never asked sales staff for their opinions, and hated spending more time than necessary trying things on - in fact, often I didn't bother trying them on.

Vivfor60 · 26/05/2024 22:09

Oh, that is cute!

https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-double-cloth-t-shirt/p/clp60645007?intid=mobileappppdpshare

I've bought a couple of these tops as an alternative to a T-shirt. Soft, cotton and skims not clings.

Also bought these black Josef Seibel slip on sandals www.brantano.co.uk/products/tonga-slip-on-leather-sandal64027 Comfort all the way!

Wearing both with wide-leg dark denim cargo trousers, black linen wide leg trousers, a black midi dress (all M&S last year) and ivory Seasalt shorts.

Just looking for a colourful cotton cardigan to complete my summer capsule.

RampantIvy · 26/05/2024 23:19

I thought Brantano had gone bust @Scissorsisters

@user3344556 my problem is that I always need to take more than one size into the changing room and I'm not a standard shape. It is much quicker to window shop online and visit the stores that have clothes I want to try on than to spend ages queuing at the post office to return stuff.

Giggorata · 27/05/2024 05:51

I am nearly 70 and an unashamed old hippy. I like to wear things that I can waft about in during hot weather and I have far too many cotton or linen maxi dresses already, mad big hats and sandals, so I won't be buying many new things.
I love that black Maya dress.
I saw this on Laundry B and liked the striking pattern. I think it is rayon or something, but it rolls up very small for packing.

Mid 60s, Chinos from M&S, there is a good selection in store and online in various lengths, styles and colours.

measureofmydreams · 27/05/2024 06:21

A few more bits....

I was given a voucher for white stuff - somewhere I don't shop - I bought this with it - a neutral colour which would work well with black or white and I could throw over a dress. https://www.whitestuff.com/p/3955/carrie-linen-collar-jacket/LGT_NAT

I work hybrid, so need to be in the office 2 days a week. It's professional services, so smartish but not rigid. The green jacket and the slip skirt below would be totally fine and I'd wear them at weekends too.

I've bought this (the whole green suit) - I love green and the jacket will get lots of wear, just not sure about the trousers at 5'4" and a size 12 - I'm thinking they may be too wide. https://www.marksandspencer.com/linen-rich-single-breasted-blazer/p/clp60649169?color=MEDIUMGREEN#intid=pid_pg1pip48g4r11c2|prodflag_As%20Seen%20On%20TV

This I thought would look good with a white linen jacket I own and a white t shirt. https://www.marksandspencer.com/satin-midi-slip-skirt/p/clp60677172#intid=pid_pg2pip48g4r1c4

And I've got this, but not sure how/when I'd wear it - not keen on the matching top. https://www.marksandspencer.com/sequin-maxi-slip-skirt/p/clp60678625?color=CHAMPAGNE#intid=pid_pg2pip48g4r7c1|prodflag_As%20Seen%20On%20TV

Thanks @Angelabdc , phase8 is not somewhere I ever look, I'll have a browse.

Nope.

Surely anyone over 60 has had at least half a century of in person shopping? I certainly don’t need it any more.

For a relatively brief period in a previous career I frequented shops that brought you champagne in your vast dressing room - but even that experience has been rendered obsolete by the readiness of high end online stores to send a personal stylist to one’s home with clothes for you to try on. But even setting aside the luxury experience, clothes shopping simply isn’t what it was thirty years ago. The ‘High Street’ is completely decimated and who wants to spend all day in a soulless shopping mall?

I’m not claiming never to set foot in a physical shop again - on the rare occasions that I pass one I find both Margaret Howell and Zara completely irresistible for browsing - but really I’d only visit a UK clothes shop with intention now if it were a tailor to have a suit fitted.

What I have noticed (on MN at least) is that there’s often a huge disconnection in the perception of what is available to buy between people who only shop in person and those who don’t.

BobnLen · 27/05/2024 08:11

I have had to shop online mainly for years as the tall sections in all stores are always exclusively online.

RampantIvy · 27/05/2024 09:38

The last few things I have bought online have all been sent back. It does mean that I am limited in the number of shops I can visit, but buying clothes that need to fit properly like footwear, jeans and trousers just doesn't work for me with online shopping.

Meadowfinch · 27/05/2024 09:52

I badly needed tops and shoes. I'm 5'8" and a size 10. I've had a rough couple of years so am rebuilding a summer wardrobe. I want some wide leg trousers next and a couple of dresses.

So far I've bought....

RampantIvy · 27/05/2024 10:55

@Meadowfinch where is the pink top from?

GreenShady · 27/05/2024 12:27

I really hate shopping in shops these days - it was maybe more fun when I was younger and liked what I saw in the mirror (and had more shopping stamina) but I prefer to try things on in my bedroom now!
Plus there's sooo much more choice that way.

Shetlands · 27/05/2024 12:35

I've just bought some things on Vinted to wear while doorstep campaigning for Labour. A gorgeous red linen M&S shirt, which I'll wear as a jacket over a vest top and jeans. Also bought a brand new pair of red Converse All Stars from Vinted to pound the pavements!

Mumwithbaggage · 27/05/2024 13:27

Loving the M and S sequin slip skirt. I'd wear it witha white linen top from M and S about 3 years ago and my white flatform leather converse. Currently on a coffee break from an entire wardrobe clearout so may need to do a bit of shopping later...

Meadowfinch · 27/05/2024 13:50

@RampantIvy Both the linen shell top and the long sleeved t-shirt are Boden.

The tshirt is thick good quality cotton. 🙂

olderbutwiser · 27/05/2024 13:50

I hate shopping in person but was dragged to Big M&S by my grown up daughter - predictably she bought nothing but I tried on a billion things I would never order online (Nobody's Child dress, wide leg trousers) and came home with a bit of a hoard including the beauty bag. Very inspired by this thread too.

RampantIvy · 27/05/2024 14:58

@olderbutwiser the large M and S stores are excellent. My nearest one is my go to when I want a mooch round a clothes shop.

I really miss Debenhams.

@RampantIvy - I bought the sandals online last week. No idea about the high street stores.

twinmum2007 · 27/05/2024 20:20

The m&s denim maxi skirt & wide legged High waist jeans in cream.
Bought at the beginning of May & they are either on or in the wash. Fab items.
