Summer wear for the short and wide

Following the thread about wide leg trousers, there seem to be a few of us who fall into the short, wide and booby category and I’m definitely one.

What do you all wear for summer? I’m fine in winter but struggle every year when it gets warmer. I want to be comfy but look stylish and it feels impossible - I’ve seen larger taller women look good but the combination of shortness and big boobs is really difficult to dress well.

Hoping we can share some inspiration and look forward to a stylish summer ☺️

Trousers usually cotton, quite loose.
I got the Italian 'magic' trousers from Amazon , size 16-22 which are great (I'm a 16), only £16.99. Lots colours. I got pink and blue. They have stretch in them which I need for my big belly.

A top with a v neck and patterned, Plain shows up all the lumps more. Long sleeves if possible to hide beefy arms.
Got JJ boobs and it's very difficult to get flattering top but pattern distracts the viewer.

in hot weather I wear with sandals, usually Earth Spirit and / or Birkenstock style.

Then try and do a bit of makeup, hair, earrings etc to make me feel better.

Loose fitting trousers - not massively wide leg but not straight either - in a slouchy fabric. I’m not massively busty so wear with a tight t-shirt or fitted top

Midi shirt dresses in a thin cotton, worn with Birkenstocks (which are so uncomfortable but for short distances I’ll allow my vanity) or chunky wedge sandals.

A friend of mine who is similar sizing to you lives in Next shift dresses like this

She always looks fab . I'm a similar shape but generally the necks are too high for me. I did find one in Debenhams before they closed and agree with friend that they are cool and comfy, can be dressed up and down.

AnnieSF · 03/05/2024 13:41

Dresses !

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 03/05/2024 13:50

If anyone can link trousers, i need some for summer, size 16-18, 5'3. I tried a straight leg pair in M&S and they looked hideous on me.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 03/05/2024 14:00

I like the idea of dresses but struggle with what sort plus I've got horrible legs 🤦🏻

I got a couple like this from Next last year and I really like them but they're quite high-necked and make my boobs look like a massive shelf.

Wide ish trousers plus v neck tops - often quite low cut with a vest underneath - I find the v slims the boobiness and the vest avoids too much of the busty barmaid look.

I agree with these-they are flattering and disguise the tummy area without being too boxy. I would avoid shorts and t-shirt as that looks dreadful on me. A knee/length slightly A-line denim skirt with a sleeveless top is far more flattering.

OMGitsnotgood · 03/05/2024 14:31

I have the same problem with the Next ones being too high necked, same as you OP. If you have big boobs you need a lower neck, but not low enough to show cleavage. If anyone knows of any like the one I linked to above, it would help the OP - and me!

BigPandaTinyDragon · 04/05/2024 07:52

I think it’s the boobs that are the problem - covered up they look shelf-like and (dare I say) frumpy, exposed you risk look tarty although not why boobs should be 🤷🏻‍♀️

Were they in quite a stiff material? I find I need a slouchy material. I have these and they hang really well - although they look hideous on the skinny models here. Trust me, they look better in RL! I had to take them up though, but that’s easy enough to do https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0877769039.html

Wide trousers - Dark green - Ladies | H&M GB

Trousers in woven fabric with a high waist, concealed hook-and-eye fastener, zip fly and wide, straight legs with creases.

Thank you @SirChenjins I'll check those out Smile

ZenNudist · 04/05/2024 08:37

I have got some nice trousers from weird fish before now but I don't like their tops. I also like their culottes and all in one jumpsuit /play suits.

Last year I got a khaki play suit from hush that was very flattering.

Go for a v neck, always!
No tight t-shirts or anything very fitted on top.

KnittedCardi · 04/05/2024 09:55

I'm always a bit annoyed at the "low cut" equals tarty. It seems to be a trend to cover up, which I don't like.

Sooooo..... I always have low cut, showing cleavage, because you know what, it looks flattering. It elongates your top, and actually reduces the size of the boob. Yes, you have cleavage, but so what, I have boobs, and they happen to be big.

I have recently invested in a couple of Nobody's Child Starlight dresses. They are really flattering as low cut, and have a waist panel which also gives a nice shape.

SirChenjins · 04/05/2024 10:00

@KnittedCardi That neckline on us shorties would go down to our waists!

I know! I'm 5' 1". It ain't gonna happen!

RaininSummer · 04/05/2024 10:12

I am 5 3 and wide. Loving the widish floaty trousers I got in Sainsbury's amazingly. Just started wearing them as sun has just appeared at last. With a cami top and a cardigan or kimono type thing it seems to work even though I have huge boobs

Pancakey · 04/05/2024 10:50

@RaininSummer sounds fab, any recommendations for the cardie/kimono to go on top? I try to do this and I can't find the right shape so I look like a potato, although a potato in a cardigan!

Screamingabdabz · 04/05/2024 13:43

I’m afraid I just stick to dresses that nip in at a high waist and flare out.

That starlight dress linked above is the perfect example of the type of silhouette - (thanks @KnittedCardi )

I’ve got loads in various fabrics and colours that I‘ve collected over the years and I waft about all summer in them. They suit my figure which is just like yours op. Another really useful and flattering one is the Free People Fable dress. And Seasalt have a quite a few lovely dresses in that shape this year.

Crankyfeminist · 04/05/2024 17:28

I like the style of the green H&M trousers linked above, but as they are 100% polyester, that's going to be a sweaty mess in no time Sad

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 04/05/2024 17:40

Get yourself a short kimono from one hundred stars. They are featherweight and make plain outfits pop. Not cheap but they do good sales and I've got some on eBay before.
