Summer wear for the short and wide

Following the thread about wide leg trousers, there seem to be a few of us who fall into the short, wide and booby category and I’m definitely one.

What do you all wear for summer? I’m fine in winter but struggle every year when it gets warmer. I want to be comfy but look stylish and it feels impossible - I’ve seen larger taller women look good but the combination of shortness and big boobs is really difficult to dress well.

Hoping we can share some inspiration and look forward to a stylish summer ☺️

Oh I'm so sad! I've seen @SirChenjins user name for so long and so many times and I've only just got it 😞

Honestly I know I'm slow on the uptake but 😬😩

Anyway, sorry for the diversion...

SirChenjins · 07/05/2024 15:26

How did we shop for shortstop clothes before we had those search engines? 😂

tobee · 07/05/2024 15:40

🤣

I see sweaty Betty is running with the " wear the damn shorts" thing.

@eggplant16 no!!
How did that happen?
Will you be contacting them?
(am I missing a joke ?? )

It was a joke!

They’ve actually used models with realistic figures as well, often I feel even plus size models aren’t representative of real people as they’re all toned and tanned.

I'm 5'4, size 14-16 and wear these Matalan trousers a lot in the summer. They come in Navy, Black, Khaki, and a black patterned one. Super light & soft material (95% viscose) and very comfortable.
Navy Harem Joggers - Matalan
Team them with a number of v-neck t-shirts from TU (again in viscose) Navy V-Neck Relaxed Fit T-Shirt 24 (sainsburys.co.uk)

I like those Matalan trousers - it can be surprisingly good in there but you have to hunt a bit. They’ve got 30% off a lot of summer stuff atm if anyone’s looking.

@IsoldeWagner Totally agree. Big or slim I have seen women who look awful. One who was wearing a strappy long stretchy vest and it just clung to everything. And Lycra shorts which were doing the same.

I always say, being someone who struggles with body image, self conscious etc. That there is changing your mind set and upping your confidence. And being well entitled in hot weather to wear nice things or not be covered up. And then you still need to be realistic.

Solidarity from Lucy Mangan with those of us struggling how to present ourselves when the sun shines.

Nice weather is here! The sun is out and the papers and the internet are filling with their annual offers of help. This is my year, at last – I can feel it! The Summer Style Dilemmas Solved are finally going to work for me! I peruse them eagerly, as I have done for the last 30 years and more, hope undimmed in my increasingly mottled and scraggy breast. But no – no, my hopes are quickly dashed. One again, this year, it seems that my Summer Style Dilemmas can only be solved by losing half my body weight and/or going back in time and making sure one of my parents mates with a gazelle instead.

One again there are demands for manicures, pedicures, facials, fake tans, exfoliation, depilation and other -ations I barely understand any more, so long is it since I stepped beyond the bounds of mere basic hygiene. Once again this is not to be the summer of dumpy, hairy women who can’t wear skirts because of chafing or sandals because of hooves. Extraordinary. Maybe next year.

Digested week: When is the summer of dumpy women who can’t wear skirts? | Lucy Mangan

I thought this would finally be the year – but no. Oh well, I can’t find my way from my house anyway

Navy Linen mix trousers in Morrison's (yes l know!) Needed a size down which cheered me up!

I think it’s the boobs that are the problem - covered up they look shelf-like and (dare I say) frumpy, exposed you risk look tarty although not why boobs should be 🤷🏻‍♀️

My favourite way to de-frump big boobs without looking tarty is a button down shirt, fairly relaxed fit and open to quite a deep V. This can mean a lot of trial and error to find a brand with button placement that suits your frame.

Tailored chinos show off curves better than loose or linen trousers as they have some structure.

And wedge espadrilles add a bit of (welcome) length to the legs.

Have a look at Hush V-neck dresses. I have a lovely loose tiered black one that is kind of cheesecloth material. Three years old and still going strong. Have seen similar ones each year. Falls from under the boobs so skims all the tummy. Maxi length on us shorties!

Witchgreen6 · 01/07/2024 08:38

@StormingNorman that sounds like brilliant advice. Thank you .

Witchgreen6 · 01/07/2024 08:41

@MTistheDB I keep wondering what you and @wherewegoing are referring to. Can you put a dim me out of misery?
