Summer wear for the short and wide

Following the thread about wide leg trousers, there seem to be a few of us who fall into the short, wide and booby category and I’m definitely one.

What do you all wear for summer? I’m fine in winter but struggle every year when it gets warmer. I want to be comfy but look stylish and it feels impossible - I’ve seen larger taller women look good but the combination of shortness and big boobs is really difficult to dress well.

Hoping we can share some inspiration and look forward to a stylish summer ☺️

Try Blue Vanilla. I always have issues with the lengths of dresses elsewhere but they have so many that work on us shorties - think they are meant to come to above the ankle but they work well as maxi dresses, are comfy and flattering. They have a mix of fabrics, I wore a cotton mix one last year in Italy in the crazy heat and it was fab. They also do lots of loose fitting flattering tops.

Here’s one dress as an example - so comfy!

Navy | Curve Elasticated Neck Shirred Waist Abstract Midi Dress | Blue Vanilla

With it's floaty silhouette and flattering gathered bodice, this shirred waist dress is a must this season!

I do like the idea of dresses, I’ve got a nice one from John Lewis Anyday so must remember to look there again.

For fellow potatoes and angry boulders I've found that bandless bras (Elomi) are wonderful at heaving up the whoppers without smothering you in too much bra on the tum.

Neveralonewithaclone · 06/05/2024 08:10

I really feel that I'm an average height for my age 5'3" and 50s but it's surprisingly difficult to dress for. I find that a crinkle material cropped trouser and longish patterned top with a deep v neck is OK. I'd like to wear a floaty maxi dress but I'd look like a dalek.

Witchgreen6 · 06/05/2024 08:31

@Neveralonewithaclone I'm v similar, have you got a link or where to buy such trousers?

Turmerictolly · 06/05/2024 08:33

I would second Seasalt. They have shift type linen dresses with mid sleeves that cover the main lumps and best of all keep you cool. There is a market stall near me with 'Made in Italy' flowing dresses that are also flattering. I see them a lot on French market stalls.

Duckschmuck · 06/05/2024 08:34

I've found long sleeved, shirred waist , shorter dresses with a v neck quite flattering and a change from the longer dresses.

Neveralonewithaclone · 06/05/2024 08:40

I can't find a link sorry but I've found that the brand Julipa is good for cropped trousers.

A dalek? Approaching in a menacing manner?

Thank you @Neveralonewithaclone , I'll have a look.

Similar size, age and shape. I wouldn't give up on Nobody's Child and I'd look at Finery as well. I had a break through with them last year, lots of sheer and stretchy material, means I can squeeze in the boobs (KK here) but still have a waist. Found by accident and bought up their end of summer sale last year. Also like linen trousers. Magic trousers ok but find they don't wear well. I've reached the stage/age where I find very few t-shirts look good so I'm building up a collection of tops instead. Desperately still looking for them though! Scoop/square necks tend to look better for me. I also find a lot of things in sales in Anyday. My biggest issue this year is no funds!! Have to save money.

Mynewnameis · 06/05/2024 13:19

V necks usually reach my belly button. Not the look I'm after.

I get on well with skater type dresses from here. Usually have to pick ones with adjustable straps (many are).

I bought these from Sainsbury's. Very happy with them. Will wear with a black t shirt.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 06/05/2024 18:39

I saw some lovely barrel leg linen trousers in Sainsburys which I thought would be quite flattering but predictably they didn’t come in short length 🙄

Dresses all the way. There are so many beautiful styles and shapes available, so once you know what suits you, you can just throw them on with nice sandals and look like you made an effort.

I agree with the blue vanilla recommendation for flattering styles, but often polyester so will need frequent washing. Boden are usually good quality and wash well, keeping their shape and size.

Would you get them turned up at an alterations place? It’s not too expensive.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 07/05/2024 06:43

I looked at turning them up myself but because of the tapered shape I don’t think it would work. I’m happy to do it normally though, often a necessity!

Oh look they have used me a model without even asking permission. What a cheek.

mogtheexcellent · 07/05/2024 09:16

Re: kimonos. Have a short one from one hundred stars and im a size 20, it just cuts me at the wrong level as its too short. I bought a long one from them and it made me look like Pavarotti in his kimono phase.

I bought a Mela London one off vinted last year and its perfect.

For trousers I buy a new pair of linen elesticated waist and straight leg tousers from Tesco every year and they are perfect on me. Not too loose and not too tight. I also have a couple of cropped pairs and the next linen dresses (but about 4 years ago they had v necks, no low backs and capped sleeve which I prefer).

Witchgreen6 · 07/05/2024 09:21

@eggplant16 no!!
How did that happen?
Will you be contacting them?
(am I missing a joke ?? )

Dopaminefuelled · 07/05/2024 11:36

I have this denim dress from next which surprisingly looks nice!

I would like a shrug or bolero to cover my shoulders sometimes due to the spaghetti straps. When it's sunny I like to cover my shoulders due to being so pale. But can't find one.

Summer wear for the short and wide
BigPandaTinyDragon · 07/05/2024 13:03

@Dopaminefuelled what about bra straps in that dress? Do you just not worry about them?

OP posts:
Dopaminefuelled · 07/05/2024 13:15

@Witchgreen6 thanks that's lovely :-)

@BigPandaTinyDragon with a nude colour bra the straps aren't too bad. Depending on where I'm going I'll cover them or not
