Summer wear for the short and wide

BigPandaTinyDragon · 03/05/2024 08:08

Following the thread about wide leg trousers, there seem to be a few of us who fall into the short, wide and booby category and I’m definitely one.

What do you all wear for summer? I’m fine in winter but struggle every year when it gets warmer. I want to be comfy but look stylish and it feels impossible - I’ve seen larger taller women look good but the combination of shortness and big boobs is really difficult to dress well.

Hoping we can share some inspiration and look forward to a stylish summer ☺️

I really like that Next shift dress, but wonder how I could wear a bra with that low back

They are stunning, but fit size 10-18..their models are so slim it’s sadly impossible to know what it will look like on bigger size people. Huge marketing failure.

Were they in quite a stiff material? I find I need a slouchy material. I have these and they hang really well - although they look hideous on the skinny models here. Trust me, they look better in RL! I had to take them up though, but that’s easy enough to do https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0877769039.html

Does the polyester not make these very sweaty for summer?

I also struggle with trousers as have slim thighs and legs but big tummy and hips so trying to find trousers that fit properly is a nightmare.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 04/05/2024 22:20

@wherewegoing I agree they should use various sized models but I'm an eighteen and there is still plenty of room for me. They are being very conservative on that sizing.

I am 16-18 and 5-2 and they are a great fit on me.

same dimensions here.

trousers - wide leg are awful on me - I look like a rectangle. I’m better with a fitted or shaped trouser and vest top then open shirt over or kimono or very loose lightweight knit.

I’ve found some fab trousers from a local
company - they are loose in the leg but taper in. Very flattering - I like everything from this place for my shape and their Facebook page is great as they model things with very normal sized normal women wearing them! These with a vest top and linen shirt are a staple for me https://www.laundryb.com/made-in-italy-noa-linen-blend-button-cuff-pant-navy/

or dress-wise - not fitted and ‘shifty’, short sleeved, linens are always better. Those puffed sleeves, frilled sleeves or bell sleeves are a NO as they add sideways width which isn’t needed.

Looking for a trouser that will keep you cool though summer we've got you covered with our Noa Button Cuff Pant. Shop women's one size, linen blend pants.

Hi again OP... I got a couple of chiffon type kimonos from vinted. Need to acquire a plain colour one now to go with the very patterned trousers. I really like them as an arm covering as not a spring chicken any more and bare arms at work are not a good look for me.

I live in Edinburgh so our summers are never exactly baking! It’s such a light material that unless it’s really hot they are fine.

I have one and am also 16-18 and 5-2. They’re beautiful and it does fit but doesn’t look so flattering because I’ve got big boobs. A big chest and volumes of fabric at the sleeve (plus large mid section) just makes me look huge. Shame because they are lovely.

BigPandaTinyDragon · 05/05/2024 08:48

I really like the Nobody’s Child dress linked above but honestly it just wouldn’t work on me - I’d have to buy a larger size to accommodate my boobs for a start, then it wouldn’t be a hint of cleavage as much as half my boobs on display looking squashed in and not appealing 🙄 I usually end up wearing a vest but it doesn’t look great and you don’t want the extra layer when it’s warm.

I like the sound of a kimono though, will investigate.

I’m short, big boobed, big tum and hips but do have a waist. 16-18 5’4, high waist.

I like midi dresses like this shape from pour moi that I wear without the belt

https://www.pourmoi.co.uk/products/jodie-fuller-bust-slinky-jersey-tiered-midi-shirt-dress/?styleid=96903

You sound very similar in shape to me. I also like shirt dresses, although prefer cotton or viscose. H&M usually have something suitable.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 05/05/2024 11:57

I'm 4'11 and a size 20 with whomping whompers so I usually wear short maxi/long midi length dresses, something with a short sleeve, and something that tucks under the bust and not the natural waistline otherwise that makes me look even shorter. Neckline, I do look better with a V neck, but I'll wear anything as long as it's not a polo or one of those boxy style neck lines.

I'm also happy to wear loose A line dresses but have to create some shape with a waist belt otherwise I just look like a small angry boulder.

Crankyfeminist · 05/05/2024 14:21

Sorry @Jimmyneutronsforehead , but "I just look like a small angry boulder" made me hoot with laughter.

(I mostly rock the red-faced potato look, if we're comparing notes).

ZiggyZowie · 03/05/2024 11:30

Trousers usually cotton, quite loose.
I got the Italian 'magic' trousers from Amazon , size 16-22 which are great (I'm a 16), only £16.99. Lots colours. I got pink and blue. They have stretch in them which I need for my big belly.

A top with a v neck and patterned, Plain shows up all the lumps more. Long sleeves if possible to hide beefy arms.
Got JJ boobs and it's very difficult to get flattering top but pattern distracts the viewer.

in hot weather I wear with sandals, usually Earth Spirit and / or Birkenstock style.

Then try and do a bit of makeup, hair, earrings etc to make me feel better.

Sounds good. Much better than those who tell me and others on other posts. That we should wear whatever we like. I agree I do have to remind myself that a lot of what I won't wear is down to other people's looks and thoughts/comments etc. So it's a mix of trying to wear what you want but also be comfortable.

Your suggestions are more basic as in easier, I'm going to have a look for those trousers too that you've mentioned!

OP, I be would say good fitting bra's, I know they can be hard to come by. I am a HH.
Obviously look at the Petite ranges. Would you be comfortable wearing dresses? As I think they look great on many figures, seem to look better than trying to balance mixing good tops and bottoms together.

Summer wear for the short and wide
Redruby2020 · 05/05/2024 14:31

@ZiggyZowie Sorry I meant to add above the picture, are these the ones? You know what it's like when you search on some sites, you can end up with several results. Seem to be plenty of colours, I even like the trainers the model has on!

Pancakey · 04/05/2024 10:50

@RaininSummer sounds fab, any recommendations for the cardie/kimono to go on top? I try to do this and I can't find the right shape so I look like a potato, although a potato in a cardigan!

Oh dear, a potatoe? My face looks like a tired sheep.

Redruby2020 · 05/05/2024 17:39

OMGitsnotgood · 03/05/2024 11:43

A friend of mine who is similar sizing to you lives in Next shift dresses like this

She always looks fab . I'm a similar shape but generally the necks are too high for me. I did find one in Debenhams before they closed and agree with friend that they are cool and comfy, can be dressed up and down.

Lovely dress, very typical of Next styling. But that model is tall and slim.

OMGitsnotgood · 05/05/2024 17:42

@Redruby2020 my friend who really suits them is neither tall nor slim, but the high necks are ok on her.

BettyNora · 05/05/2024 18:35

I just sold my next shift dresses as I looked like a sack of (angry) potatoes in it. Not for me. No waist and I looked dreadful when I look back at photos

wherewegoing · 05/05/2024 19:01

All of you who say you look like angry red potatoes, tired sheep or an angry boulder..I just want to say that I’d rather hang out with you than some perfect model because at least you sound funny as..! 😂

(And I know perfect looking people can be funny too..)

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 05/05/2024 20:20

@wherewegoing when you're short enough to look like you might start biting someone's ankles or pick a fight with the neighbours Yorkshire terrier you've got to develop a sense of humour 😂

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/05/2024 00:32

The Next shift dress that's been posted wouldn't work on my large boobed short frame. A shift dress is the worst shape on me. I tend to wear v-neck wrap dresses or wide-ish leg trousers made with floaty material and a silky pop-over short sleeve v-neck blouse. All the fabrics are very floaty/fluid materials that move when I walk which is very flattering.
