Where to buy clothes for DS 16yo - 6'5"?

Waspie · 27/04/2024 14:45

My son is tall and showing no sign of stopping growing. He's got a 30" waist and 36" inside leg. He's 6'5" tall, so long of body as well as leg. But he's a teenager and skinny as a rail.

I'm really having difficulty finding affordable clothes for both smart and casual wear. We've bought everything ASOS has to offer in 30/36 (not that there was much!) Next is useless, as is M&S. I'm not a shopper and google is failing me.

Everywhere I've found online conflates tall with big/heavy - so I might find 36" leg but then find that the item only starts at a 36" waist.

The search is driving me insane! Please help Smile

Recently discovered Boohoo Men Tall section with a few successes for 6ft 5 very skinny teen. 30” waist options for the trousers and the idea is they’re to fit those over 6 ft 4 (could do with an extra inch but my one is all leg and short body!). Good luck!

SadieJS · 27/04/2024 15:24

If you are up for a trip, my 6ft 2 female friend would pick up cheap Amsterdam flights and fly to shop for the day, especially at sale times.

The Dutch are tall so plenty of choice.

Waspie · 27/04/2024 15:56

@Gridhopper - thanks, I'll try Boohoo Men. All leg and short body is probably even more difficult to find clothes for! DS is wearing his 34" leg trews really low but because the t-shirts look like belly tops now he's got a gap around the waist!

@SadieJS - 😂my sister was in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago and text my son: "I have found your people". We are off to the states in July so hopefully they will have some options too.

Lands End do menswear that works well for the 6'3" men and boys in my family. Trousers come in lengths up to 38", and tops from the Tall range mean my gorillas guys can have long sleeves without having to wear shirts that are massive around the chest.

Lands End are not cheap, but they have constant sales and are generally very good quality.

Shoes, now, for a schoolboy with size 14 feet 😭

wyziwyg · 27/04/2024 16:40

Next do some tall items, on line. Jacomo and 2Tall might suit.

jonnyhatesjazzzzz · 27/04/2024 16:48

Similar to DS
I've bought jeans and other trousers from Next online and Hollister does up to 36 length online. Also got some drawstring linen trousers on Amazon. Rubbish quality but lasted for the holiday.

jonnyhatesjazzzzz · 27/04/2024 16:50

@Aparecium - we got some Clarks adults in size 14 that look quite schoolish rather than office like! I thought they wouldn't last but still going strong for 5 terms.

LiterallyOnFire · 27/04/2024 16:59

Sounds exactly like my DS, who is now 23 but hit full height at a similar age.

Gap are good for longer length jeans and trousers but smaller waists. Sometimes have to order on line. 75% of his teen wardrobe was Gap.

M&S can be good for basics, if they're basic and inoffensive enough to pass teen fussiness and they have longer/taller fit available on a selected range.

I still buy him Gap stuff as presents and also found FatFace T-shirts in the longer fit very good for his long back.

I think he said that it was diesel that he now buys most of his better jeans from, but haven't been directly involved in that, so only 90% sure that's the brand he mentioned.

Hope it helps anyway.

Waspie · 28/04/2024 10:08

Thanks all!

I tried Jacamo and 2Tall - Jacamo is one of those where you have to have a bigger waist to get longer legs. 2Tall was better but everything he liked was sold out in his size.

I couldn't find anything on M&S. People have said they do a 35" leg (which might be just long enough) but I can't find any with a 30" waist. I need to buy him a couple of suits for next term so I had thought M&S would cover this. I will go into the store I think and have a chat to someone in the suits section.

GAP only seem to do a 34" now, but I know that they certainly used to do a 36". I'll search again. Next I can only find jeans in 34/36 upwards. Perhaps it's just the wrong time of year to be buying clothes Sad

I will keep looking.

At least we don't have the shoe problem that some of you have. DS only wears an 11 so he's been in Startrite brogues for school for years.

@LiterallyOnFire - Fat Face is a good call, I'll try them. I tend to buy from ASOS for long t-shirts. They have a good selection of basics/polos, shirts. Their long sleeved t-shirts have longer back and arm length and they are good value for money.

Ds is 6ft 5 but has ridiculously long legs and small waist. In the past I have managed to get 38 inch length trousers from ASOS but there doesn't seem to be many options at the moment. We have had a few pairs from Next in their XL length ranges. Again very limited.

Redannie118 · 28/04/2024 12:42

My DS is 6ft7 and buys a lot of stuff from H&M( you get a student discount in there too) T shirts are nice and long in the body and wash well.

Waspie · 29/04/2024 08:40

Thanks @Glassbottom I've found ASOS lacking in trousers at the moment too, although I have managed to get some shirts and t-shirts. I can't find any in Next!

@Redannie118 - I'd forgotten H&M! Thanks for the reminder. I used to buy lots of his clothes there as a child as I found them to be long and thin. I will take a look.

I've bought some shorts, joggers and chinos in Boohooman - let's see if they fit. Fingers crossed!

My son is nearly 6' 6" and finds stuff on Amazon some of which are known brands such as Adidas but you can't get here, I assume they're for the US market

dandel10ns · 29/04/2024 08:47

OP as he's 16 I don't know if you still need school trousers, but I read on here (and discovered it to be true) that John Lewis school trousers in the tall and thin range are better than M&S, ie the leg length is longer and the waist narrower. I found this out when my ds was in y10 and wish I'd known sooner! Maybe of use if he needs some smart trousers for any other reason too I suppose.

Wow - those links were inserted automatically, not by me! Are MN trying to maximise click revenue??

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/04/2024 08:51

My 6ft 4 has some success with Levis

Vestito · 29/04/2024 09:04

I have two tall DSs. I find it easy enough to get jeans - as well as Levis/Hollister etc, I found Jack & Jones to have a good enough choice across all the trouser types. Though I think the longer legs for some styles start at a 34” waist. Next do longer legs in the PJs.

But joggers? Nightmare. I used to buy from 2tall.com for school - needed plain black. But as they got older they wanted braided stuff. Nike have a tall range which was ok but really more a 34” leg but better than nothing. But it is never in stock.

It baffles me that most companies make jeans and trousers in a full range of sizes but often have one length only for joggers/tracksuits etc. Do they think that tall men don’t play sport/chill???

Boohoo tall - got a pair of jeans there - it was actually very long, much longer than normal long. Haven’t tried the joggers.

floppybit · 29/04/2024 10:33

My son is 15 years old and 6ft 5, some good suggestions on here but as @Vestito says it's branded joggers which are a nightmare. I managed to get a pair of tall adidas once but never again as they are always out of stock!

I can’t get branded joggers for my 6ft Dd either.

Nike occasionally have some. She wears mens. Not sure what your son can wear!

ColourMeBlue · 29/04/2024 10:58

I second Boohoo tall mens section. My son has been wearing this brand since he was 15.Impossible to get him clothes elsewhere.I havnt managed to get him branded clothes in years. The boohoo tracksuits are really nice😊

SublimeLemonHead · 29/04/2024 11:01

Yes to the joggers problem! Ds1 is 16 and 6'3'' with long legs. The poor bugger just wants a nice pair of Adidas or Nike joggers like all his mates wear but they never go near him length wise.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/04/2024 11:37

Nike used to do longer legs. They don’t seem to now.

I bought ds some when he was about 20. He’s still fot them now at 30, as they are the only ones long enough.

Vestito · 29/04/2024 12:23

Anyone know how to start a Mumsnet campaign for extra long joggers? 😂

I'm sensing a business opportunity..
Maybe we need to order from the Netherlands- they all seem to be super tall there!
