I'm stuck in my 3 colour Mac pallette. Light on lids, medium on crease , dark in corners and underneath. Is this now dated? How else do I do it?
Any guidance gratefully received!
I am thinking of just adopting the claudia winkleman approach and just smudging black round and hope for the best but then I see Trinny London stuff and it all looks glory and nice

I'm exactly the same. I do follow some people on Instagram but the makeup is a bit heavier than I would really like!

Following with interest

I've watched some you tube but it is all start with glowy base etc and I just want to know about eyes

I don't wear eyeshadow now. My lids are too hooded and my eyes are different shapes.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/03/2024 09:33

I watched the Facelift tutorial she does, but Dominique Sachse has some great idea for eye makeup for ageing eyes.

The other thing I'd say, my nana when she wore eyeshadow wore a cream one, she was much older than me though.

I do one colour on lid and just blend it out a bit.

Wagonwheelforme · 27/03/2024 09:35

I’m the same- went to a make up class as a 14 year old and still do exactly the same thing at 48!!

Id suggest booking into a bobby brown session with a make up artist. You can see what they do. ( although anytime I’ve been to various brands- Charlotte tilbury / BB/ Mac they all do the same thing you describe!)

TheOGCCL · 27/03/2024 10:06

Eyeshadow isn't really very in these days. I tend to just put a single colour on, just to hide the discoloration!

Try watching some videos by Erica Taylor on TikTok or instagram

Yeah this is what I'm thinking. Maybe I'm not so dated as loads of the tutorials are how to do a smoky eye which is what I do anyway!

I also think eyeshadow isn't very in right now, it's more winged eyeliner. I only wear eyeshadow for a night out, and I stick to one colour, a lightish pinky bronze that suits my skin but doesn't stand out too much. I put it on lids and corners and a very light smudge underneath my bottom lashes, but not too much or it sits in the eye bags 😆

When I do this though, my eyes don't look defined enough do you put anything underneath

How old are you?

Bobbi Brown are very good but then so are MAC too.

DrJoanAllenby · 27/03/2024 11:15

Mac satin taupe.

Fantastic shade as it's not brown and it's not grey but can look more like each one depending on what you're wearing and whether you have a tan etc.

Every day look I wear on lid and in socket.

I do find as I've got old that a smudged eyeliner along the top of my eyelashes gives them definition.

For a more made up look I use the eyeshadow under my eye applies with a dampened cotton bud.

Fifiellz · 27/03/2024 11:21

I watched a tutorial for hooded eyes and stick to it religiously now and lots of people have mentioned they like my eye make up. Im 48.

Light shade over brow bone, mid shade blended into crease, do not blend onto socket.

Light pref slightly shimmer colour placed only on the centre of socket and blended slightly upwards. Dab of white right in inner eye by nose.

I do one colour on lid and just blend it out a bit.

Same (I use Trinny Wisdom most of the time), with a bit of soft taupe eyeliner as well.

BangingOn · 27/03/2024 11:39

I really like Glossier Lidstar which gives a subtle wash of colour and lifts my eyes slightly without being too heavy or noticeable.

DrJoanAllenby · 27/03/2024 11:40

Alison Young the QVC presenter has a website and we're make up appropriate dow her age but looks fresh and not overdone.

The skin around my eyes is dark - I just use a tiny sweep of pale slightly shimmery to brighten my upper and inner eye. Don't put anything in the crease which is deep enough as it is.
Sometimes if I'm tanned I might use a bit more of a gold shade for an evening out.

Same (I use Trinny Wisdom most of the time), with a bit of soft taupe eyeliner as well.

One tutorial I saw was to skip eyeliner and to tightline under the top eyelid.

Iloveshihtzus · 27/03/2024 12:56

According to India Knight in The Sunday Times Style section, the 3 color eyeshadow that you mention is very outdated. She did a column on it last week. She said you should only wear one color on your lid - whatever color you like!! She likes paler colors but lives darker ones on other people.

I have now decided to move to this - I had already done so unknowingly in recent years, when I go out with ‘full makeup’ I just use a khaki green that I like on my eyes.

I think we all need to keep up with makeup trends, if we wear it. I remember as a child noticing women with blue eye shadow and over plucked eyebrows, and thinking how old fashioned they looked. I don’t want to be that person.

Perhaps look up how Claudia Winkleman does her eye makeup? Maybe she has a video or her makeup artist does?

kindletimeisfinetime · 27/03/2024 13:07

@Iloveshihtzus I'll have to try the one colour. The three colours is what I tend to do - actually mainly 2 colours but I know it's not quite right!

Sparkletastic · 27/03/2024 13:30

I think the 'one and done' eyeshadow with a rich brown eyeliner smudged into upper lash line and upwards at the outer corner of lids is the most effective on my early 50s face.

Garlicnaan · 27/03/2024 13:38

Love Erica Taylor on this, she just did a video about dated vs updated eyeshadow
