If you are late 40s how are you doing eyeshadow

I'm stuck in my 3 colour Mac pallette. Light on lids, medium on crease , dark in corners and underneath. Is this now dated? How else do I do it?
Any guidance gratefully received!
I am thinking of just adopting the claudia winkleman approach and just smudging black round and hope for the best but then I see Trinny London stuff and it all looks glory and nice

Like this, dark eyeshadow in the crease leaving the socket lighter

This is literally exactly what I do now even with the liquid eyeliner

Badly 😁

I use Bobbi Brown Cream Shadow Stick in Vanilla all over the eyelid, which evens out any redness etc.

I then use another stick (Golden Bronze) to do an artistic/smudgy line near my lashes. No idea if this looks good to anyone else - but I like it!

Will also use a brown or grey soft pencil eyeliner.

ChinChinDarlings · 28/03/2024 02:43

I use a bit of liner, shadow and mascara.

I keep it simple too. I'm a brunette with pink tones in my skin, so eye shadow is a single warm pink sheen across the lids, brown eyeliner at the outer corners and brown mascara.

That and brown shadowing to darken my brows a little is good for every day.

By mid summer once I've tanned a little, I switch to a pale gold colour sheen shadow. Then back to pink in autumn.

Oof. Another thing I am doing wrong.

Edited

She has transformed how I do my make up and really quite simple stuff

I've recently stopped doing the 3 colour thing with black liquid eyeliner when I realised no one younger does this anymore, it was a sudden realisation that I'd become dated.

I now use one colour, fairly light brown for day and blend it up above the crease and a smudged brown eyeliner. I do a tiny bit of brown shadow under my lashes on the bottom, as I think my eyes look piggy without it.

Back21970 · 29/03/2024 11:46

The 3 colours is a classic technique in my opinion and will never really date - I think it’s very flattering as long as it’s blended well and the darkest shade is not too dark - I recall when I was younger I used black, which I wouldn’t suit now.

I can’t get to grips with the winged eyeliner to update my look - can look good on others but on me somehow looks as if I’ve tried too hard!

For a very quick fix I sometimes just use taupe crayon type shadow around my eyes and curl my lashes but if going out the 3 colour thing is still generally my go to technique.

Everyday = one colour, usually taupe, pale pink, brown
Evening = the three-colour thing I've done for decades

I keep meaning to do that tightliner thing. If anyone has a cheapish product I can try initially, I'd be grateful for recommendations

Essence eye liner. So cheap and the best imo for tight lining. The one that rolls up . And I have tried a lot. I don't like those that blend as they don't stay on well. The Revlon one was awful. No idea why as I had used it as a normal eyeliner when I used to blend a bit but it really irritated my eyes so badly they were quite red and angry after.

suburburban · 29/03/2024 15:57

Thanks

Had a look at the videos

Does Erica Taylor's keep repeating

BoobyDazzler · 29/03/2024 15:59

I don’t. I have hooded eyes and eyeshadow makes me look like I’ve been punched in the face.

Thank you so much. I saved so much money on the Essence liners from "just my look" that I had to get two kerastase products! Can't wait to try the tightlining.

I never do my eyeshadow like that…it makes me look much older and I’ve never understood why it became a thing. I lighten the area around my eyes as much as possible with concealer (just Revolution which is excellent) so it looks bright and fresh. I put highlighter pencil (Barry M) under my eyes which brightens them even more.

Then I use liquid liner (usually navy blue with a bit of sparkle) and soften the edges because I hate a harsh line. Sometimes I do a wing, sometimes not. Then mascara top and bottom. Sometimes I contour underneath my eyes with a bit of very well blended brown liner.

BusterGonad · 29/03/2024 23:44

I use quads or quints for a more sophisticated look but quick day time looks I often just use one tone. I have a Burberry single eyeshadow especially for this, I'm not sure if I have Barley or Rosewood, often teamed with a contrasting eyeliner in a forest green, brown or navy. I love love love the By Terry ombre black star cream shadow sticks. I used to have about four. My favourite being Misty Moon. I've also got quite a few Japanese branded eyeshadow which is much finer and sheerer than most western brands and just perfect for a wash of day time colour.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/03/2024 23:56

After a trip to space nk recently for some eyeshadow advice (in my very early 50s), I now do a single colour on lids blended well. Sometimes a neutral creamy colour on inner corners for a bit of brightening. I've got a taupe and a dusky pink shadow that I alternate between. When I first tried them I thought they were far too dark for a daytime look, but actually look fine once blended. The three colour type approach just wasn't working for me anymore, it made my eyes look a bit sunken, and I felt it was quite ageing. For going out, I'm experimenting a bit with smudged eyeliner and a bit of sparkle on the lids. I'm pale and cool toned, so it's a challenge to avoid a bit of a Morticia look.

Would like to master tight lining, so must watch some of the videos linked here!

Overall I find less is more. As I'm typing this, I'm looking at a very made up 20/30 something presenter on tv. If my 21 year d niece is anything to go by, it's a popular look among the young folk, but I think a. It looks like a mask (and is quite ageing) and b. would look ridiculous on me!

FluffyFanny · 30/03/2024 07:24

Eyeshadow not in? That's not the impression I get when I look at the trendy beauty websites like Cult beauty and Youtube- it's all about the eye palette and what you can do with it! The smokey eyed 90s look is especially on trend! Winged eyeliner might be popular with some teens, but for the older woman eyeshadow is more popular.

I did wonder, every video I see is all about the eyeshadow.

Are you using cream or powder eyeshadow

I use both.

Will definitely try the darker colour on lid

I liked the American lady but I don't like wearing too much make up

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/03/2024 09:43

Powder for me @suburburban I find it much easier to blend.

suburburban · 30/03/2024 09:45

Thanks

I'll probably use up the cream now I've got it and do a sheer wash.

It's not too light

HullaBallu · 30/03/2024 10:31

Tight lining isn't about the waterline - that can look too dramatic/harsh - it's about getting liner into the base of the lashes from underneath to make the lashline look thicker. I've got the flat Laura Mercier brush and the cake liner in Bleu Marine (softer and more flattering), and although it takes a little practice, it's the most understated way to look awake and pulled together.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 03/04/2024 19:11

@isthismylifenow Thanks so much for the essence eyeliner for tightlining. It's cheap, easy to aplly and stays put!

Vitriolinsanity · 03/04/2024 19:19

I've not been big on eyeshadow since the 90's.

I do have a shimmery brown shadow from Bobbi Brown that I brush on for a bit of sparkle when I'm going out out.

I'm all about lipstick though, and a bit like leg and cleavage, I find eyeshadow and lipstick too much together.

Oh that's interesting, that's what the makeup experts seem to say it is, I mean tightlining the waterline area. I personally find the waterline is fine for me and not too dramatic and harsh but going to try the liner into the base of the lashes from underneath.
