If you are late 40s how are you doing eyeshadow

I'm stuck in my 3 colour Mac pallette. Light on lids, medium on crease , dark in corners and underneath. Is this now dated? How else do I do it?
Any guidance gratefully received!
I am thinking of just adopting the claudia winkleman approach and just smudging black round and hope for the best but then I see Trinny London stuff and it all looks glory and nice

OK I can do one shade on the eye and I think I'll buy a dark brown eyeliner instead of my normal black. I think I need a new mid colour

Dark brown is much better but seriously... look into tightlining. It's so much more flattering.

I really like Glossier Lidstar which gives a subtle wash of colour and lifts my eyes slightly without being too heavy or noticeable.

The Lidstar actually looks like a good sheer colour.

According to India Knight in The Sunday Times Style section, the 3 color eyeshadow that you mention is very outdated. She did a column on it last week. She said you should only wear one color on your lid - whatever color you like!! She likes paler colors but lives darker ones on other people.

I have now decided to move to this - I had already done so unknowingly in recent years, when I go out with ‘full makeup’ I just use a khaki green that I like on my eyes.

I think we all need to keep up with makeup trends, if we wear it. I remember as a child noticing women with blue eye shadow and over plucked eyebrows, and thinking how old fashioned they looked. I don’t want to be that person.

Perhaps look up how Claudia Winkleman does her eye makeup? Maybe she has a video or her makeup artist does?

I think it's up to you what you use. What does India Knight say (I don't subscribe to the Times so I can't comment). If you prefer to do this then do it.

For younger eyes and back in 2021, but if Charlotte Tilbury says it's ok:

I have the gold colour, I think it’s called Bun, it’s very sheer but buildable if you want more than a wash of colour. I generally just stick to a light wash and it works well.

One tutorial I saw was to skip eyeliner and to tightline under the top eyelid.

I tightline and do a subtle line above as well. It’s a very, very soft shade though. I find dark grey or brown look too harsh now (I’m quite pale). I also find any red tones at all in a liner make me look tired.

GordoStevensMustache · 27/03/2024 14:55

What is the secret to tight lining? Every time I try I stab myself in the eye and any colour that does go on ends up half way down my face in about 10 minutes! It's so difficult!

I've just been using pencil eyeliner for now but apparently it's easier with a liquid eyeliner but not with a pointy tip (though you could try that).

Basically lift up your top eyelid and dot liner between eyelashes and join up, you can do this with mascara too.

I tried this last week and it worked but don't think I was doing it properly, then today I tried it but after I'd put mascara on which probably wasn't the best idea, so ended up using a cotton bud and concealer to clean up round the eye area. Practice makes perfect.

I'm 59 and fully in the smoky eye until I die club . One grey eyeshadow over the lid and blend it out into the socket . Eyeliner mascara done in two minutes.

You are using the wrong product if it's smearing. Look for gel liners. They should 'set' after 2-3 mins and not really budge.

Victoria Beckham does a great one. Huda beauty. Revlon. So do many many brands

Colour in the base of your upper eyelashes from underneath

But the thing with tightlining, some suit pencils, some suit gel eyeliners, some suit cake eyeliner, some suit liquid eyeliner. It's all different for different people.

henlake7 · 27/03/2024 19:46

I do the 3 eye colour thing and abit of brown eyeliner along the bottom. TBH I dont care if its dated.
I tend to stick with more natural make up so its not like you can really tell Im doing my eyes 'old fashioned'....the point is to look better without looking like you have make up on!!LOL
Although if I need cheering up I'll wack on something sparkley!

Im very hit and miss though. My eyesight is so bad that even with a magnifying mirror I cant see that well what Im doing. No way Id manage those artistic eyeliner tricks people manage these days!

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 27/03/2024 19:54

I do smokey eye, one slightly lighter shade underneath, then a darker shade on top, then a brown shimmer eye liner. Bobbi Brown eye liner pots are amazing.

FartingAgainstThunder · 27/03/2024 20:01

For everyday I use the vieve eye wand in sand then tightline/smudge with a chocolate brown pencil (I think it's Charlotte Tilbury)

Ineedanewsofa · 27/03/2024 20:12

One colour, I often use my bronzer instead of actual eyeshadow (lazy!) Going out, out, one colour but maybe a bit glittery, a light shade under the brow, smudgy crayon eyeliner on top lid, smudge of the eyeshadow under the eye. No waterline eyeliner top or bottom, it’s very ‘harsh’ on me

I watched a tutorial for hooded eyes and stick to it religiously now and lots of people have mentioned they like my eye make up. Im 48.

Light shade over brow bone, mid shade blended into crease, do not blend onto socket.

Light pref slightly shimmer colour placed only on the centre of socket and blended slightly upwards. Dab of white right in inner eye by nose.

What’s the difference between the socket and the crease though?

Is tight lining putting the mascara in the inside eyelid? ( water line) or is it on the outside of eyelid but just very close to lashes?

Fifiellz · 27/03/2024 20:51

Like this, dark eyeshadow in the crease leaving the socket lighter

As far as I can tell it’s inside eyelid (waterline).

CinnamonJellyBeans · 27/03/2024 21:21

Everyday = one colour, usually taupe, pale pink, brown
Evening = the three-colour thing I've done for decades

I keep meaning to do that tightliner thing. If anyone has a cheapish product I can try initially, I'd be grateful for recommendations

I’ve recently changed my approach and love it for my mid-40s eyes - I use urban decay primer in ‘sin’ as an overall base, it’s a little shimmery and sets beautifully. Then I’m using a Laura mercier stick that’s a dark rose colour - gorgeous and again goes on very well, easy to smudge but good staying power. I’ve got light grey hair and olive skin.
