What’s happening with jeans???

I’m trying to rebuild a capsule wardrobe following the pandemic & pregnancy. Can fit in jeans comfortably again but am so confused about what is stylish at the moment. I don’t want to look like a teenager but also not completely out of touch. Can I wear high waisted straight leg mid blue jeans? I just think they will last longer as a wardrobe staple than if I go for a wide leg (how long will they be popular?). Something I could wear to work with a blazer but also at the weekend. I already have a pair of cropped black barrel leg jeans I still fit in & love but they’re far too casual for work. I’m trying to go for ‘classic /French chic’ kind of style for a capsule wardrobe so that hopefully I can invest in a few good pieces & wear for years. I’m buying most things second hand but I always think jeans are worth buying new.

I was thinking these:

I'm struggling with jeans, I'm from the era of growing up in skinny jeans which I've worn for years. I feel dated in them now though, although i still have them in my wardrobe I dont reach for them much. The problem is, I only have 1 pair of jeans that I like at the moment as i cant find any I like, I look silly in the wide leg ones. I'll try and find a link of the ones I have.

I like the ones you have linked , they are a classic look and can be dressed up or down.

ru53 · 09/03/2024 13:34

Ooh I like those! Maybe I’ll try them instead as I’m not sure & they’re much more affordable. I don’t suit the wide leg ones either, I think they work better if you’re tall.

H&M Slim High Ankle jeans are great. Pretty cheap too

CaribouCarafe · 09/03/2024 18:24

I like the ones you linked (although the pictures are pretty hilarious - over 5 close up pictures of the models' bums 😂)

Boppertini · 09/03/2024 18:25

@ru53 I’ve got the sezane jeans you linked. I’ve got two pairs, one in “standard” mid-blue denim colour and another pair in a darker denim tone. Got them after pregnancy and love them! Feels like they’ll last ages and wash well. Not a lot of stretch though (but that’s how I prefer my jeans). I’m currently pregnant again - excited to bring them back out afterwards though.

I’m 59…..I’m wearing flares….with converse or adidas trainers…..I still have my skinnies….but not worn them for around 6 months ….I’m a size 10

43ontherocksporfavor · 09/03/2024 18:35

Go wide leg jogger or casual soft wide leg trouser . There’s another thread on them that might be helpful. So much more comfortable.

Kalevala · 09/03/2024 18:36

If you are going for mid blue then second hand would be fine. Dark denim I'd want new or else listed as hardly worn.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 09/03/2024 18:40

I was going to ask if they’re a bit tight/not much stretch. I can see they are from a pp.
I love my jeans but I noticed today they’re ripped/torn, look like they’ve had the bottoms hacked off. I’m too old for that!
I do not like skinnies at all. I just think sweaty crotch!

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 09/03/2024 18:40

I'd have to be surgically parted from my skinny jeans because they're the only style I like, the only style that suit me and I think all the rest are hideous! I also have an abnormally short torso and so high waisted or even mid rise in some make me look like Mr Fredriksen from Up.

Octomingo · 09/03/2024 20:32

I have flares, but as I spent my late teens and early 20s in them, I just feel like I'm dressing like a student again. Skinny jeans work for me. I'm tall with a good pair of shoulders. I tend to work a grown up skinny punk look.

43ontherocksporfavor · 09/03/2024 20:37

I’m 52 and if I do wear jeans , they’re flares.

Do you have to quite tall for these jeans to fit well

I love flares and also wore them in my teens - and I suspect I'm a good deal older than you are! I've never owned a pair of skinny jeans, never liked them - although I admit they do look good on some people, just not me. I hope to be wearing my flares in my 80s!

Boppertini · 10/03/2024 06:49

@Enchanted82 they come in a “normal” length and a separate “tall” length so should fit regardless! I’ve got the tall version to make sure they weren’t too short on me.

43ontherocksporfavor · 10/03/2024 07:05

It all depends on your shape. I’m of ample bottom and skinnies don’t flatter unless I’m wearing a long top. Wide leg jeans that skim are better for me. But wide leg joggers and trousers are the most flattering and comfortable. Heavier fabric in cooler months and linen and viscose in warmer times.

AnneNotEmily · 10/03/2024 07:11

I have the ones you’ve posted and they look great. My only issue with them is the button fly, I just don’t think they sit as well over the crotch area as a zip does, I also find the buttons pinch a bit when I bend over. Length wise I’m 5’4 and the short hit my ankle perfectly.

ETA I’ve just discovered Abercrombie and Fitch jeans and they’re amazing!

merlotmerlin · 10/03/2024 07:44

I was about to post that I like the look and colour of the ones in the OP, They would surely look good with a blazer. But the word of caution about the button fly needs noting.
I was out and about on a couple of the fine days and noticed every style of jeans being worn by someone. We can choose our own and all be 'on trend' or at least not adrift by ourselves.

deedeemegadoodoo · 10/03/2024 08:23

I like cropped mom type jeans. I wear with hi-tops in winter and can switch to trainers / sandals in summer. I’m 51 and size 10.

I also have some subtle barrel”eggs with turn up and paper back waist I bought from Matalan (of all places). They’re really comfortable and also work with hi-tops / trainers / sandals.

I used to wear bootcut or flares years ago but it tended to be with a bit of heel. I’ve no intention of going back to wearing any heels!

I’d be interested to see which flared or bootcut jeans people are wearing with flats.

Althenameshavegone · 10/03/2024 08:29

I had the same dilemma and found Levi’s 501 cropped jeans to be the best, I usually get them off vinted as out of my budget new

Same - and my favourite 7/8 Mom jeans are from River Island, of all places (they often come up on Vinted).

I also like M&S boyfriend jeans won the seamed striped down the side in the summer - they're a sort of loose-ish straight leg but have a nice high waist and a bit of stretch.

I have AND/OR barrel-legs that were described as barrel when I bought them 3/4 years ago but are nowhere near as exaggerated as that style is now! I wish they'd make the same style again.

But my very very bestest jeans, for the past 5-10 years, are a pair of washed black Gap "Sky-high Mom" jeans (always makes me laugh). I LOVE THOSE GODDAMN JEANS. They're a high waist and slightly barrel-like leg and they're the perfect length...unfortunately Gap sizing is very erratic, and they change the style names a lot, so I haven't succeeded in getting the same fit again but I persist!

Fingeronthebutton · 10/03/2024 08:39

If you’re going for the casual/ French chic look ( as I do) you don’t follow the trend.

HesterRoon · 10/03/2024 08:39

A poster on another jeans thread recommended Lee Marion jeans-I took a punt as they were ridiculously cheap on Amazon and they’re amazing. Straight leg, beautifully fitting around hips and waist-ie tight. Classic shape and nice denim. I have hips and a waist and fit was great.

theDudesmummy · 10/03/2024 09:01

I am 60, I have very good legs still, but a bit of a tum and big boobs. I wear skinny jeans with a longish or tunic top most days (not to work if i have to go to a meeting etc, but i wfh nearly all the time). I don't care if I look dated. I also wear big pink trainers with the jeans. I justify this by the fact that the only part of me I still really like now (after having had a lovely hourglass figure when young) is my legs, and I don't want to hide them!
