What’s happening with jeans???

I’m trying to rebuild a capsule wardrobe following the pandemic & pregnancy. Can fit in jeans comfortably again but am so confused about what is stylish at the moment. I don’t want to look like a teenager but also not completely out of touch. Can I wear high waisted straight leg mid blue jeans? I just think they will last longer as a wardrobe staple than if I go for a wide leg (how long will they be popular?). Something I could wear to work with a blazer but also at the weekend. I already have a pair of cropped black barrel leg jeans I still fit in & love but they’re far too casual for work. I’m trying to go for ‘classic /French chic’ kind of style for a capsule wardrobe so that hopefully I can invest in a few good pieces & wear for years. I’m buying most things second hand but I always think jeans are worth buying new.

I was thinking these:

Does anyone think you have to have slim/toned legs to do the knee high boots with jeans look?

I last did this 15 or so years ago but unsure as to whether it was flattering. It was with flat or not a high heel.

I've got a gorgeous pair of black suede fringed above knee boots (I think just above) which I hardly wear so maybe I could do that...

I think skinny jeans look better than mom jeans which actually seem to be on their way out. A 90s regular straight fit look nice, as do 70s flares (high waisted). Another option is bootcut because the main shape will be more fitted like skinnies so not a massive leap. I'm still not convinced on the ultra wide leg jeans, I think it takes some searching to find the right ones. I'd suggest a trip to River Island as they seem to have all the different styles and leg lengths to try on.

But... I'm not going to post a picture of when I wore them but I swear I needed a heel or a bit of a heel to look good in them.

I'd prefer to be tall and slim to pull off the baggy jeans look:

With jeans you have to find the cut and brand that suits you. There's no point blindly following what people are trying to make fashionable. Skinny suits me best so I'll wear them. 'Mom jeans' suit nobody imho!

Could not agree more! Diesel Skinzee. I will wear nothing else!

If you want ones that won't date, go for the cigarette style leg - straight but not skintight. You can wear them all ways from tucked into tall boots, to turned up with trainers, to as they are with loafers or (checks under table) with DM dealer boots! I love the versatility.

That said, my current passions are a pair of Teds I got from TKMaxx for a song (£28). They are well cut and straight, but are split at the bottom to go over boots. I like the idiosyncratic look of them, and the fact that they're neither straight or bootlegs.

So how come leggings are still ok, despite being very skinny but skinny jeans are seen as old fashioned? I look god awful in the jeans the kids are wearing right now. I’m sticking to skinnies. I look chic in my jet black high rise skinnies with cropped white jumper.

I'd have to be surgically parted from my skinny jeans because they're the only style I like, the only style that suit me and I think all the rest are hideous! I also have an abnormally short torso and so high waisted or even mid rise in some make me look like Mr Fredriksen from Up.

Me too! I’m also curvy and need tne skinny fit to show off my shape and waist so that I don’t just look like a wide barrel. Personally I wear what suits me and don’t follow trends - unless they suit me!

This may sound unbelievable but I found a pair of sezane jeans in a charity shop at the weekend for £8.50! Look brand new and fit me like a glove. They’re not the ones I was looking at, they’re a more wide leg style but I’m loving them!

This is a mystery to me too. I actually agree that skinny jeans can still look chic I think it depends how you style them, they sound great with a cropped jumper! I think part of the whole ‘skinny jeans are dead’ thing is really just a manufactured gen z vs millennials click baity trope perpetuated by Instagram & TikTok. Definitely can’t fit back into mine yet either way but they’re in the back of the wardrobe...

I'm 62 and wearing flares. I love them. But I need some with higher waists than all my pre-loved Jane Norman's. My menopausal belly does a bit of a muffin top even though I'm a size 10. I look down and see a huge belly in low rise jeans.

pharmachameleon · 29/03/2024 08:42

@ru53 amazing! Do you know what style the Sezane jeans are?

I've been wearing M&S The Ivy Skinny jeans for years and find them way better cut than jeans that cost £££ more.

I spend on other clothing items, but not with these jeans!

Love M&S jeans I have the Ivy and the Lily slim. The petite is great for my wee legs !
