What’s happening with jeans???

I’m trying to rebuild a capsule wardrobe following the pandemic & pregnancy. Can fit in jeans comfortably again but am so confused about what is stylish at the moment. I don’t want to look like a teenager but also not completely out of touch. Can I wear high waisted straight leg mid blue jeans? I just think they will last longer as a wardrobe staple than if I go for a wide leg (how long will they be popular?). Something I could wear to work with a blazer but also at the weekend. I already have a pair of cropped black barrel leg jeans I still fit in & love but they’re far too casual for work. I’m trying to go for ‘classic /French chic’ kind of style for a capsule wardrobe so that hopefully I can invest in a few good pieces & wear for years. I’m buying most things second hand but I always think jeans are worth buying new.

I was thinking these:

I am currently pregnant and living in leggings. I have maternity skinny jeans from my last pregnancy and won't be upgrading them

I find it so hard to non skinny jeans that suit me. As a young teen I was really skinny and wore massive baggy jeans but had such a slim waist it looked good with a tight top. Then I wore lots of skirts.

Most jean shapes these days do nothing for my shape

I’m still wearing my skinny and straight cut jeans. Can’t quite tear myself away from them.

but I did recently invest in some wide leg jeans from https://www.goodamerican.com/en-gb/collections/wide-leg-jeans

they are amazing. High waisted, fit really well around the top - belly/bum and thighs, then wide from there. Couldn’t bring myself to submit to a drop/loose crotch.

They are on the expensive side, but the jeans I already have from there last forever and even black jeans have held colour and not faded after many washes.

I’m tall and may of their jeans start at a 33” inside leg, but they do a petite selection too so most people would find something to fit.

These look great and probably would work on me but outside my budget at the moment! The length might be an issue too I’m 5ft 5 with short legs.

I’ve just got a pair of these which I have high hopes for!

https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0941666053.html I bought a pair of these recently, my first ever 'mom' jeans, and couldn't believe how unflattering they were on the arse. My arse is one of my best features but it somehow made me look not only like I didn't have one, but that I had given myself a wedgie with a nappy.

My advice is to wear whatever style you like and who cares of they are fashionable? Just because someone decided they are or they aren't, why should you care if you like the way you feel in them?

Agree with this.

The thing with jeans is they've been around since the 1800's in one way or another, workwear back then, and there's so much choice, different styles, a design to fit most body shapes, colours, high wasted, ripped, baggy...
You name it...Jeans, no matter the style will never go out of fashion.

After seeing this thread and realising that I’ve been avoiding wearing jeans since the skinnies went out, I have just, in excitement, pulled out my low rise flares from the late 90s. They’re a bit on the snug side and there appears to be something squishy spilling over the top. Also, the rather capacious pants I’m currently sporting don’t look quite as attractive, when I bend over, as the thongs I used to wear did. I think I need a more appropriate alternative.

Thanks for that. It’s what I feared. In the photos the models always stick their bum up in the air, and probably wear some padding too.

I have the ones you’ve posted and they look great. My only issue with them is the button fly, I just don’t think they sit as well over the crotch area as a zip does, I also find the buttons pinch a bit when I bend over. Length wise I’m 5’4 and the short hit my ankle perfectly.

ETA I’ve just discovered Abercrombie and Fitch jeans and they’re amazing!

Edited

I second this! Abercrombie and Finch jeans are amazing.....

cherish123 · 11/03/2024 22:56

These look nice.
I like drainpipe jeans, having worn them second time around (used to in 80s) for about 14 years. I actually hate the feel of wider jeans. They rub on my legs. I find it very difficult to get jeans to fit. Sizes kero getting bigger.

I have these, I think I'm just going to buy them in a few different colours as they are the only ones I've tried that I like.

On back of this thread, and the recommendations for these New Look 'Tori' jeans, I've bought them and can confirm they are really flattering on! So thank you OP (and the people who recommended the jeans!)

CENqqq · 20/03/2024 10:29

I had no idea skinny jeans were dated! I’m wearing them all the time with boots (kneee high ones), do they really look dated?

CENqqq · 20/03/2024 10:30

Sorry if I sound really stupid but the brut ones posted look skinny jeans to me? Maybe I have no idea what skinny jeans are

1mabon · 20/03/2024 10:33

Never worn jeans in my whole life, I hate them, for me, they are for cowboys and overalls for working men.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/03/2024 10:36

I’ve abandoned jeans altogether. They all feel wrong. I wear wide leg soft trousers. They just look a bit newer than jeans. And I’ve worn jeans all my life. But I find the lack of definitive style of them makes me feel wrong atm.

Do you have any recommendations for wide leg trousers? I've been looking for a black pair but not sure how to style them so I don't look like I'm dressed for the office. I have a tweed pair but they don't look very good with boots, which are my default footwear.

Are you Audrey from To The Manor Born??😅

I think there is no point worrying about fashion in jeans....just go with what suits you. If you buy a 'fashionable' pair and they make you look like shit then you will never wear them!
Personally I love flares. bootleg, wide leg, cargos (the roomy options!). and will always keep skinnies around for dog walking and wet weather.

Having said that am currently wearing wide legged cream cords as just not feeling the denim today!😎

dutysuite · 20/03/2024 11:14

I’m 5ft 7 and like skinny jeans, straight or slight flared jeans - depends on where I’m going. I think mom jeans can look frumpy on me. I don’t think skinny jeans are dated, I follow loads of stylists and they’re still showcasing them.

SheerLucks · 20/03/2024 11:19

I've been wearing M&S The Ivy Skinny jeans for years and find them way better cut than jeans that cost £££ more.

https://www.marksandspencer.com/ivy-skinny-jeans/p/clp60460004?intid=mobileappppdpshare

I spend on other clothing items, but not with these jeans!

Those jeans look like they need to be much longer in the leg. Much more flattering that way.

{Do they come in different leg lengths?}

Nice shape though.

I haven't worn denim for years as it's a ''cold'' fabric for wearing while walking..It gets damp and stays damp longer than other fabrics in the rain.

Octopus45 · 20/03/2024 15:19

I've just bought some wide glittery ones from Monki. I'm 49, 5ft5 and a size 10/12 (12 in jeans). I cannot wear anything high waisted cause it just makes my bum look huge, I'm long waisted.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 20/03/2024 15:24

@oakleaffy yes they do, I went for short leg as I'm 5'2" - I do think they look better just at the ankle though, I wouldn't want them longer.
