Shoes you wear with dresses?

Inspired by the nobody wears heels to work thread, does anyone want to share their favourite shoes to wear professionally with a dress?

Struggling as ballet bumps have no support, broges/loafers are too chunky under dresses and trainers too casual. It's like there's an entire shoe department, I don't know about somewhere.

I wear boots in the winter and smart leather trainers in the summer.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 04/03/2024 20:42

Flat lace up ankle boots in winter and. a selection of flats from Pretty Ballerina when it's not winter.

In summer Trotters Hampton canvas shoes or similar.

I like a low block heel slingback or maryjane.

I would like to know as well. I wear orthotics, and ballet flats and mules would be out of the question for me.

Onelifeonly · 04/03/2024 22:52

I don't often wear dresses but ankle boots or black lace ups in winter, or buckled low heel if I want to look smarter, and sandals or trainers in the summer.

BeReet · 04/03/2024 22:53

I wear my Doc Martens with everything but I would not take fashion advice from me 😁

The older women in my office wear ballet flats or loafers (the non clunky kind) with dresses. The younger women (under say 45ish) wear heels still. The dress code is business formal though. If it was more casual perhaps sandals would be an option in the summer?
Smart ankle boots work for winter.

HangingOnJustAbout · 04/03/2024 23:00

I have the same issue. I can't think of trainers as anything other than bottom of the list casual wear, even smart leather ones.

I also have skinny legs and large ish feet so a heel would appear to reduce the length of my feet in proportion to my legs if that makes sense.

I'm very happy with boots and dresses in winter. I like trousers with chunky loafers too. Can live with strappy sandals with a casual dress in summer but with a more business dress or a nice bar dress I'm stuck.

I have just got rid of all my work heels which I haven't worn since pre pandemic. I remember choosing them for comfort and practicality but now they seem very high! And I got rid of all my going out heels, did I never walk anywhere??

This is the style (but not necessarily the brand) that I mean when I say "non clunky" loafers.

Ooo, those are lovely.

These^ . No they aren't leather, but they are incredibly cheap, seemingly indestructible, very very comfortable(I've walked miles and miles in them literally) and they go with everything. And they are lazy to take on and off.

I also have a sparkly (because I am a grown up really) pair of kickers kick hi-s for when my back is really really bad and a pair of heeled knee high boots for when my back is really really good. But it's the uniqlo loafers that get the most use from.

Thanks, glad I'm not the only one confused.
I'm about to turn 40 so not sure what category that puts me in. I love shoes & trainers but this is the blind spot.

I'm short so tend to wear dress rather than having to take up trousers all the time, even petite ones.

I have brogues & loafers and like wearing them the trousers/jeans but still think they look ridiculous with most of my dresses, most of which are knee-length as any longer swamps me.

Kitten heels or slow slingbacks seem to be my only options. Even a lot of the block heels around seem soulless or something.

Functional over fashion seems to be the trend & I'm not loving it.

This is the ad that came up when I was reading your post 😂

I WFH so wear anything. I wouldn't know what to wear. I hate those clunky brogue type shoes they look awful IMO.

I would be inclined to wear 'good' ballerina pumps as in with decent support not that crap ones, but I am 35 and know zero about fashion!

Black tights and ankle boots in winter

Nude tights, or bare legs, and nude ankle boots or white or metalic trainers in summer . Or a metallic sandal with a flat sole and a sling-back (as in the picture)

I have fat ankles though - so dainty shoes just make my feet look like pigs trotters.

I do chunky boots or adidas superstars in various styles/colours in winter and sandals in summer - those range from patent madrid birkies to something more trendy. I always like to have a gold or silver sandal for posher occasions. I'm not a fan of ballet flats as they seem so insubstantial. I do a lot of walking about at work and need comfort more than anything though. My work is very casual and people tend to wear very similar footwear to what I wear. I only ever see the odd exec in heels and noticed last year that even the most dedicated heel wearer had given up and was wearing boots! I was shocked because her commitment to heels was legendary and she liked them sky high.

Lavenderandbrown · 05/03/2024 12:57

I can’t wear flats either. I do like a boot but with a snugger shaft….no pirate loose tops. I just ordered these…aerosoles camera Come in many many colors and come in wide!

Sorry that didn’t post like I wanted it to…aerosoles camera platform shoe.

Moier · 05/03/2024 13:04

Mary Jane shoes? Little strap across..

HurryUpHurryUp · 05/03/2024 13:11

I just watched This Morning and on their fashion feature they styled all the models in sling backs with kitten heels and Josie was wearing a pair too. I don’t personally find them comfortable but some people might get on with them. I’ve got a pair somewhere I haven’t worn for years so I might try them out but not on a walking day!

BeardieWeirdie · 05/03/2024 13:46

I wear Fly London Salv ankle boots and black tights.
Trainers and dresses/work wear look awful.

WelcomeMarch · 05/03/2024 14:00

Yep, I got the 'toastie microwavable slippers' too!
