Shoes you wear with dresses?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 04/03/2024 20:00

Inspired by the nobody wears heels to work thread, does anyone want to share their favourite shoes to wear professionally with a dress?

Struggling as ballet bumps have no support, broges/loafers are too chunky under dresses and trainers too casual. It's like there's an entire shoe department, I don't know about somewhere.

@ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees I feel like something like this could work, but the smart-casual flat is new territory for me!

FiftyNotNifty · 06/03/2024 22:32

These flat smart shoes are all gorgeous but they are horrific below my chunky ankles!
I actually think smart leather trainers look much smarter than anything which has heels hanging out the back, or lots of foot showing!

Springtime43 · 06/03/2024 22:41

The best advice I ever received on flat shoes: they need to look intentional. Bingo. I’m wearing these shoes because they’re fabulous, not because they’re the only things I can walk in/borrowed them from a traffic warden.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2024 22:44

not because they’re the only things I can walk in

True in m y case - sadly.

@londonmummy1966

I do like some of these but £200 for a pair of basic flats just doesn't seem like value for money. I wear out shoes very quickly.

I kind of like these ones instead, same idea but less pricy

Or these https://www.dunelondon.com/eu/en-ie/detailed-snaffle-trim-heeled-slingback-courts-camel-0095504510024579.html?geCountry=IE&geCurrency=GBP

Maybe these (a bit different) but probably not with a dress <a class="break-all" href="https://fredfunk.co.uk/collections/new-arrivals/products/zanni-co-vinhlong-heeled-loafer-soft-aqfredfunk.co.uk/collections/new-arrivals/products/zanni-co-laocai-one-tweed-loafer-with-chucky-buckle-chiffon-sparkua" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://fredfunk.co.uk/collections/new-arrivals/products/zanni-co-vinhlong-heeled-loafer-soft-aqfredfunk.co.uk/collections/new-arrivals/products/zanni-co-laocai-one-tweed-loafer-with-chucky-buckle-chiffon-sparkua

I like wearing cute ankle boots with dresses.

Ankle boots don't have to be clunky there are very elegant ones.

MariaVT65 · 07/03/2024 04:35

Lace up ankle boots
Long boots
Smart but nice sandals (from New Look, not Clarks)
And yeah tbh I wear converse to the office

I’m mid 30s and sorry, I wouldn’t be caught dead in most of the examples posted on this thread!

My 60 year old boss wears dr martens and her boss wears high-platformed trainers with suits.

theyoungishman · 07/03/2024 04:50

Classic tan coloured sea salt leather sandals in the summer and flat ankle boots in the winter with tights

Whatnowfgs · 07/03/2024 05:42

@RampantIvy

Have a look at Waudlaufer shoes for Orthotics.

Maybe something like this

No, not tailored dresses. I love them but they are back on the wardrobe but I would be lying if I said I didn't want them to make a comeback.

Typically something like this but closer to knee-length.

I hate the move to casual dressing. It's not really me! Even my casual wardrobe isn't that casual. I like tailoring and structure.

I'm the same OP. I feel odd wearing jeans to work even though loads of people do in my office. I've got a wardrobe full of lovely smart dresses and skirts but they all feel wrong now and I never know what shoes to wear.

I'm 65 and haven't seen anything I like on this thread. I wear boots, trainers or sandals as well.

I have real problems finding flats that don’t squash my toes or rub my heels, but these are really comfortable for all day wear. I have them in the navy but they have bright colours too and in the sale now. I’m tempted by the pink!

I think they look fine with dresses, but also really handy for jeans when it’s not quite warm enough for open toed but you still want to look summery.

I’m late 50s.

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/03/2024 09:27

Oh snap @Marchingonagain 😂I only read the first page before posting. Aren't they comfy! More supportive than those very flat ballet pumps that used to be fashionable, but they probably aren't great if you do need proper arch support.

They’re awesome aren’t they! They are the only flats I would ever wear these days. Most shoes hurt or rub including expensive ballet pumps like French sole

Stormbornform · 07/03/2024 09:51

Boots in winter, sandals/ trainers in summer

Wexone · 07/03/2024 09:57

2024theplot · 04/03/2024 23:00

This is the style (but not necessarily the brand) that I mean when I say "non clunky" loafers.

oh these are nice - also similar to what i wear to work with dresses. also wear mules or a low ankle shoe boot - cant wear ballet flats ( also cant stand them )

tiredandbaggy · 07/03/2024 12:05

I'm 43 and have moved away from ballet flats. I got a pair of Fairfax and Favour Reginas for my birthday (sorry I know they are hated on here) and I have worn them to work with a dress pretty much every day since. I will be very sad when It gets too warm in summer. I also have a pair of very soft leather brogues which are goldish pink. I wear them with dresses and footless tights. I'm considering getting a pair of more neutral coloured brogues for the summer too - can't wear sandals as I sometimes work in a lab.

My brogues are similar to this but a bit pinker

gershwinsdog · 07/03/2024 15:18

@Crochetablanket You are an absolute star! Love the shoes and boots on this site!

MotherWol · 07/03/2024 16:14

Now I'm getting promoted adverts for flat shoes 😆I really like these, although they're way out of my budget, and would be really nice with the dress linked upthread, if open toes are acceptable. Anon Copenhagen So now I'm on the lookout for something similar but less expensive.

Sanni 20 Calf suede Bamboo brown

Sanni is a great addition to any collection. An open toed sandal with a low 2 cm. heel. It is open in the sides and closed in the back for extra comfort

Barney16 · 08/03/2024 07:14

Doc Martens. Always. I have a pair with fur inside for winter and a non fur pair for summer.

Shortandfat · 08/03/2024 08:30

As per my name, I am short and fat - I have lipedema which means chunky legs and ankles, with fat pads and broken veins all over.

Dresses are a real issue in Summer. In Winter opaque tights and long boots seem to work ok. My solution is to only wear long dresses in Summer. My legs are just too ghastly. Trainers with dresses just chunk up my chunky legs already. Ankle boots cut off at the worst possible place to emphasise a thick calf. Any non- scooped shoe emphasises how short my legs are. When younger I used to wear an espadrille wedge with success. Now I need more foot support.

If anyone has a slightly heeled arch support summer shoe that is scooped at the front - let me know!
