Shoes you wear with dresses?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 04/03/2024 20:00

Inspired by the nobody wears heels to work thread, does anyone want to share their favourite shoes to wear professionally with a dress?

Struggling as ballet bumps have no support, broges/loafers are too chunky under dresses and trainers too casual. It's like there's an entire shoe department, I don't know about somewhere.

I can go up half a size and put an orthotic in ballet flats or other shoes with no internal structure. Gabor and vionic are good for internal arch suppprt.

@Riverlee I've toyed with those many times for casual/weekends/holidays but the sole seems slippy. Does it have sufficient grip outside the shop?

I wear my Doc Martens with everything but I would not take fashion advice from me 😁

Me too ❤️

RampantIvy · 05/03/2024 23:09

My problem is that I really dislike pointy shoes and chunky soled shoes. I don't need the height or bunions, and I really need to try shoes on before buying.

Supersimkin2 · 06/03/2024 00:06

Shoes are a lot more informal now.

Mules with/out heel bridge the gap between formal office agony and fashionable comfort.

I do expensive trainers or black Stan Smiths, or sam Edelman slightly chunky mules.

Or men’s shoes. Gucci loafers (men’s classic start at size 4) are splendid for walking and no one can have a go. They last 30 years so they work out very cheap.

wanttogetadvice · 06/03/2024 08:57

court shoes?

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/03/2024 09:26

I work in a very casual office and everyone wears either trainers, flats or sandals in summer. Even pre-Covid no-one wore anything like a kitten heel or those very pointy low heel court shoes, way too corporate.

I tend to wear shirt dresses or similar in summer, with ballet flats - these are really comfy: https://www.allbirds.co.uk/products/womens-tree-breezers-jet-black?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAxaCvBhBaEiwAvsLmWOlhj6B2Cb4FDpuxg0uiLSA4FAx1S7TkfzfAZC_36wHDJ4aq_qhw2xoCi9AQAvD_BwE&size=uk-8&utm_campaign=PMax%20%2F%2F%20UK%20%2F%2F%20Flats&utm_content=&utm_medium=pmax&utm_source=google&utm_term=

Or I might wear Toms style flats, or sandals with thickish straps like the gold ones above on a very hot day. I like a low vamp and don't like anything too chunky. Trainers with dresses look weird on me, I have size 7 feet and it just looks too clumpy to my eyes.

Women's Tree Breezers - Jet Black (Black Sole)

Crafted with silky-smooth, breathable eucalyptus tree fibre and a secure fitted collar, the Tree Breezer is a versatile, lightweight, and comfortable ballet flat with no break-in necessary.

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/03/2024 09:27

Oh snap @Marchingonagain 😂I only read the first page before posting. Aren't they comfy! More supportive than those very flat ballet pumps that used to be fashionable, but they probably aren't great if you do need proper arch support.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2024 09:35

My podiatrist says that ballet flats are the worst shoes for arch support. I love the look of those Allbirds, but sadly, they wouldn't be suitable.

I find them really comfortable and can walk for miles in them. I don’t find them slippery at all. I don’t really like open-toed sandals so wear these instead. They’re not cheap, but I think they’re worth it.

I bought these in navy and gold.

Love those. Would work with trousers too.

No, not tailored dresses. I love them but they are back on the wardrobe but I would be lying if I said I didn't want them to make a comeback.

Typically something like this but closer to knee-length.

I hate the move to casual dressing. It's not really me! Even my casual wardrobe isn't that casual. I like tailoring and structure.

That’s really nice. I’d wear it with opaque tights and either flat boots or loafers.

SuffolkUnicorn · 06/03/2024 14:43

Im 41 and wear irregular choice have done since 2006 and converse on the days I don’t wear heels

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/03/2024 17:00

Love the look of these!

gershwinsdog · 06/03/2024 17:18

I had some amazing Mary Jane shoes about 20 years ago. Cream soft leather and cut away to the sides. Proper mod shoes. I've looked for another pair the same for years and can't quite replicate them.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/03/2024 17:24

Summer - Birkenstocks with everything

Winter/Spring - Superga metallic trainers, Loake boots, Clarks lace ups and when i need to be smart I have a few very low heeled pointed or Mary Jane type shoes.

dudsville · 06/03/2024 17:46

I also don't feel quite right myself in trainers at work.I have a pair of solovair shoes for trousers. Just the one pair, in oxblood, which goes with all my trousers. Then a few pairs of DM boots for dresses. Summer is birkenstock arizonas, or the mules, in a few colours. I like not having a million pairs of shoes.

londonmummy1966 · 06/03/2024 18:31

Pretty Ballerinas do a range of loafers that have pointed toes so they look more elegant (and will slim down large feet). The ads for Vivaia that pop up all the time on mumsnet sometimes also have pretty loafers but it isn't a company I've ever bought from so no idea what the quality is like.

What shoes would go with a dress like this? Normally I’m in trousers for work, but I’ve got a thing coming up that’s likely to be more dressy, but I feel a bit daft in heels these days. What kind of flats should I be looking for?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 06/03/2024 21:49

@MotherWol, this is typical of the dresses I'm.talking about too. Ballerinas too flimsy, brogues and loafers to chunky.

I'm not a kitten heel fan but thinking I might have to get over it or maybe low block heels.
