Do you carry it in a sassy expensive tote or messenger style bag or a backpack?

A backpack provided by my employer.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 20/12/2023 22:23

I replaced the hideous laptop bag supplied by work for a beautiful leather and Harris Tweed laptop bag which weighed a tonne.

I now have a very light padded nylon laptop bag from Radley - it's got a pattern of the Radley dog so everyone here will hate it.

I couldn't bring myself to use a backpack.

Roka backpack. V comfortable to carry, lovely to look at and loads of room inside for other stuff.

RaininSummer · 20/12/2023 23:00

Backpack

Spaghettieis · 20/12/2023 23:06

Backpack. A tote is too heavy with laptop, water bottle etc. I have a fjallraven kanken with specific laptop pocket.

fluffyteach · 20/12/2023 23:09

Mia Tui Sydney backpack. I hate having bags balanced on my shoulders as they always fall off.

I am a bit of a Mia tui fangirl though. But it is the best backpack I’ve had - and bloody bottomless!

SwedishEdith · 20/12/2023 23:12

Cheap backpack from Decathlon. Wanted the lightest thing I could find.

A backpack provided by my employer.

Same here but have to confess it’s really comfortable and can fit notebooks, papers etc as well as laptop, headphones, mouse etc.

grumpycow1 · 20/12/2023 23:17

Rains backpack

Lantyslee · 20/12/2023 23:34

Roka backpack here too. I bought it to fit a large laptop from my last job so there's plenty of room.

Delphigirl · 20/12/2023 23:43

I carry it in a laptop bag which I wear messenger style or carry with the handle. I have this one https://knomo.com/collections/laptop-bags/products/hanover-laptop-briefcase-black-119-101-bsn which is very nice and has a sassy red lining. I use it to carry a thin macbook air and an A4 hardback notebook and assorted papers and pens and it has useful pockets etc but in an ideal world I would make it maybe half an inch thicker around the gusset as it is a little tight. But that's because I always have some papers with me.

I can't do backpacks. I never have been able to. I'm not 15. Sorry.

Why have you apologised?

Delphigirl · 20/12/2023 23:51

Because I can see that they are practical and lots of people seem to like them but they just seem childish to me. Personal taste, not trying to be insulting

elizzza · 20/12/2023 23:56

Sensible backpack. It’s a black Herschel that I don’t think is entirely unstylish, but I do look fondly at the wool camel coat and beautiful leather handbag I once wore to work. Sadly my days of style over practicality are behind me. I walk to work, I drop two small children (and all their bags and snack boxes ans mad school projects) on the way, it’s always bloody raining. I need a practical waterproof with a hood and a hands free bag that also holds water bottle/lunch/umbrella/spare shoes for a meeting.

While I have two laptop back packs sourced from outdoor/hiking shops including an Osprey, I mainly use a laptop bag. I brought the bag of Amazon and it is light.

Randomly I have to carry two laptops using public transport, which is where sleeves and the backpacks are useful.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 21/12/2023 00:01

When I'm driving to the office, I have a leather tote bag for my laptop & paperwork and then a handbag.
When I'm getting the train into London, I switch between a sensible rucksack, a leather bag which can be worn as a rucksack or as a handbag and into which I can just about cram by laptop or the aforementioned tote bag. Which of these I chose will vary according to what I'm doing in the evening, the forecast, what footwear I'm in (high heels plus tote bag plus lots of walking makes me want to cry!) and how I want to be judged.

Yogaandchocolate · 21/12/2023 00:12

A Coach leather tote. We had to complete an occupational health questionnaire recently which included a question on how you carry your laptop to work. As a result I’m now getting regular emails about my bag being non compliant with OH policy (which I’m ignoring)

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/12/2023 00:39

@Delphigirl I totally agree with you. I don't like backpacks. They're a real faff on public transport. People constantly having to take them on and off. I'd also be worried about pick pockets when squashed on a train. And I hate it when people turn around with their backpacks on and whack me in the face on public transport.

In top of all that I've got big boobs so a backpack just looks terrible on me 🤣

I usually use an across the body laptop bag but then have to carry a handbag too. So I'm hands free and don't have to take it off to sit down public transport but I'm juggling two bags. There is a huge gap in the market for a decent handbag to carry a laptop that doesn't cost a fortune.

I carry mine in the cheapest of cheap bags, and I drive to and from work so no-one sees me. And despite having and needing a laptop for work I earn minimum wage. So won't be buying an Osprey or otherwise for the yoke.

Hopefully your employer paid for that laptop.

Delphigirl · 21/12/2023 00:49

I have pretty much ditched a handbag if I have to carry a work bag. I barely ever carry my wallet as I do everything on apple pay, and my laptop bag fits my phone, security cards, lipstick, pens etc that I need.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 21/12/2023 00:50

I use a rucksack with a waist belt to take the weight off my shoulders because I also have other equipment to carry.

flowerchild2000 · 21/12/2023 07:03

I have a very expensive custom built laptop that I carry in a flimsy old canvas backpack, like a teenager. I need to fix that situation 🙈
