Coat for wedding: is this good or terrible?

DusterCoatRabbitHole · 10/09/2023 23:24

I have a navy dress for a friend’s wedding at the end of September in the UK. Yeah, it might rain. But I only have a full-on winter coat or a boring raincoat which is the wrong length anyway.

So I have been down a duster coat rabbit hole and cannot decide.

This is the dress.

I love this burnt orange coat. Not available in my size, but if I can find something like it, is it an ok combination?

Your original combo is the best. Maybe look for a similar coat but with a little more shape. Stunning, original and classic all at once. I admire your taste, go for it.

ShyTed · 12/09/2023 04:49

I would probably go for a bolero style jacket or wrap.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 12/09/2023 05:34

I love the original coat too OP. It's a pity it isn't in your size.

I don't understand why people are suggesting velvet (although I really, really, love the velvet orange one), or thin cashmere wraps etc. Maybe they didn't understand that you are not asking for an accessory for the dress, but a coat that will protect you and your dress from the rain, but still go well with your dress?

The burnt orange colour goes beautifully with the dress, and I think that you wearing the two together would look stunning. So if you can find a suitable coat in that colour, I think you should definitely go for it.

Would you mind showing us you ready for the wedding at the end of September please, you can leave your face out of the photo if you must...

Have fun - your post suggests that you are great fun after you have got over any initial shyness!

Dresses are more tricky perhaps @thelittlefox

I was baulking at the materials used for the coat and suggested Vinted for an inexpensive cape that wouldn’t need to fit exactly. But dresses are harder to find in natural materials, I think, at this price point. I struggle for weddings and even renting works out quite expensively. I clocked the polyester but didn’t want to make OP feel bad and it’s a pretty dress. At least she’ll look fab for a day in her Hobbs number! I bought a Vinted silk dress for a wedding this year and it didn’t look as great as I’d hoped.

But looking around the high street there was nothing I felt was formal enough and flattering in natural fibres under around £300. Even higher end wedding fave Rixo is a sea of polyester and at double the price of the Hobbs dress. It’s a gap in the market that used to be filled by Oasis, Warehouse etc back when it was good quality.

Also a voice in the minority but I love the coat! I think Navy and Orange/Bronze is a great combo and the coat is youthful. Some of these suggestions of beige jackets and shrugs will make you look grandmother-of-the-bride.

Exactly! The original coat makes the outfit exciting while still being understated and smart enough for a wedding. Black coats and navy pashminas - why the insistence on an outfit that wouldn't look out of place in the office or at a funeral? 😂

Lentilweaver · 12/09/2023 10:31

The original coat is definitely a lovely colour and navy plus orange is a great combo.

Do you have time to look at Vinted or charity shops? I have a lovely orange and green coat from a charity shop in pure wool. Hard to get wool coats these days in the high street.

Moveoverdarlin · 12/09/2023 11:15

I would wear a bolero with that. Or a mohair, dainty cardigan, perhaps a cream blazer, but you won’t need a big coat like that. Colour wise I’d go for cream / navy / hot pink.

SarahAndQuack · 11/09/2023 00:37

Could you go for a soft jacket like this? https://www.nancymac.co.uk/collections/shrugs-jackets-and-coats/products/lilliana-jacket-in-deep-red-velvet-1

Or just a lovely scarf/shawl to wrap over your shoulders in a hurry?

I just think that a standard coat, unless it's made from a really obviously 'luxury' fabric like velvet, or obviously made beautifully, tends to detract from the occasion.

This is a much better option-sorry but not to put too fine a point on it, that coat is bloody awful, especially for a wedding

What about something like this? Is you swipe through the photos the seller does them in loads of colours!

I LOVE capes!

I think Nancy Mac is "bloody awful".

The Nancy Mac suggestion (as well as being "bloody awful") also misses the point that the OP is looking for something to wear over her dress when she'll be outdoors getting from A to B, taking account of possible rain. She's not going to be spending the entire wedding wearing her coat.

Rina66 · 12/09/2023 17:10

Did you look at the other coats on Nasty Gal? There's a couple of other bright options? I have to say, I bought a lipstick pink Teddy coat a few years ago from them and it's beautiful but nearly every time I wear it, someone admires it and asks where it's from, I cringe when I have to say 'Nasty Gal'!!!

thelittlefox · 12/09/2023 17:40

Sorry OP, not maligning your dress, just bemoaning the slide in quality at every price point.

I wouldn't expect silk for that price (well I would, but I'm perhaps a bit demanding!) But for a drapey occasion dress, even viscose would look and feel far more luxurious, and it's not an expensive fabric.

Agree with pp, the decline of Oasis, Warehouse, Monsoon etc has left a huge gap in the market.

On another note, I also cringe at 99% of everything on Nasty Gal, but I have just bought the perfect denim maxi skirt. I've been searching for months, and never thought I'd find it there for less than half of what I expected to spend.

DusterCoatRabbitHole · 12/09/2023 17:59

The other Nasty Gal coats didn’t do it for me so much. I have the same feeling as you @Rina66 over names by the way. Fat Face? Come on. No doubt it’s not meant to be rude or patronising but I can’t be bothered to look up its origin story and find out why.

I like the long Joe Brown coat @stillawip . A lot. They have some beautiful clothes. @Chedderbites2 had a jacket upthread. I wonder whether you have to be a model to avoid the ‘I’m wearing my dressing gown’ look, or anyway get away with it. Or just be Noel Coward. I’m going to look into this one.

Good points about fabric. I have made my peace with polyester 😁

Sadly, I have the opposite of the magic touch in second hand clothes shops.

I personally never wear coats to weddings regardless of the weather. I think they look awful when all dolled up in a beautiful elegant dress no matter how stylish the coat is. It just looks so odd. I own lots of pashminas in different colours so I just colour coordinate one with whatever colour dress I'm going to wear. I attended a wedding a couple of weeks ago and wore a navy dress and a cream pashmina and cream shoes. I was tempted to wear a grey pashmina and grey/silver shoes but my grey/silver shoes were too high for the dress so changed to cream. Another option is maybe a woolly/fluffy bolero instead of a full on coat.

ThisMamaNeedsSleep · 12/09/2023 21:42

LaviniasBigBloomers · 11/09/2023 01:32

So for me, the thing that's maybe attracting you to the coat is the colour - navy and orange are a fab combination. But the coat (fast or otherwise creds aside) is a bit of an edgy cut, whereas the dress is quite classic. I think the coat will drown the dress. That said, a wrap or whatever is so dating and part of my mindful buying thing is to always buy things you'll wear again and again. If you're not a wrap/shrug/whatever type person, you're basically buying one thing for one occasion that won't get worn again.

So. There are loads of tweedy double breasted blazers around which I think you'll get loads of wear out of. Or even a cropped bomber. Think of it as just a piece of outerwear, it doesn't need to 'match' that much but essentially just cover you a little bit while you're travelling. Whip it off in the service and no-one will even see it at the reception.

Agree, and nicely put too 👏🏼

I actually like the orange coat but I don’t think it would go well with the dress… keep searching OP, maybe something in beige/tan, even a leather biker jacket or something.

Palindrone · 12/09/2023 21:52

The dress is beautiful.

The coat is making me crave Quality Street.

DusterCoatRabbitHole · 12/09/2023 22:18

Ha ha @Palindrone I started this thread because I didn’t know whether to put the time into trying to find something similar to the coat, or whether everyone would say ‘OP, you will look like a big Quality Street’.

(I still like the coat though.)

Well, I think they're lovely! Bloody love a Cape!

Menstrualcycledisplayteam · 12/09/2023 22:24

And I liked the originsl coat too, OP. Lovely colour combination and practical for your journey.

I thought it was lovely too and didn’t deserve the miserable comments… very dressy, would be lovely at Christmas etc.

HarrietJet · 12/09/2023 22:54

That's lovely.
