Coat for wedding: is this good or terrible?

I have a navy dress for a friend’s wedding at the end of September in the UK. Yeah, it might rain. But I only have a full-on winter coat or a boring raincoat which is the wrong length anyway.

So I have been down a duster coat rabbit hole and cannot decide.

This is the dress.

I love this burnt orange coat. Not available in my size, but if I can find something like it, is it an ok combination?

They are pricey, but I would go to Reiss and buy one of their coats. I have a camel coloured tench and long white blazer from there which I bought over 5 years ago and wear both all the time. They have literally cost me about £5 per wear. They were expensive, and are formal so are perfect for weddings and important work functions. But they also look great over jeans - or anything really. Buy cheap, buy twice. Or worse, buy cheap, wear once and don't even feel good!

I love Reiss.

Thank you! I have lost all sense of discernment. Nothing I’ve seen really grabs me. If the weather demands a coat, I’m not keen on wearing all-over navy.

What sort of thing would you look for?

If it were me I'd put my whole budget on my dress and wear whatever coat or jacket I already owned and best suited the weather on the day.

Most of the day you won't be wearing a coat anyway. If you really don't like whatever coat you're wearing, you can take it off in church and for any outdoor photos. Your coat will spend 90% of the day in the coatroom.

If you are determined to get a new coat I think the one you chose, worn open over a navy dress, is far, far nicer than most of the twee alternatives suggested.

Clarich007 · 11/09/2023 10:43

Oh sorry OP.
The dress is beautiful very classy, but the coat is awful, it looks cheap despite the price.
How about a simple fitted silk jacket in cream or white.Hope you find what you are looking for

DuchessOfSausage · 11/09/2023 10:51

I'd go wearing the dress, but with a smart mac or trenchcoat and a pashmina.
Sleeveless might be a bit too chilly and the pashmina could cover upper arms and shoulders without detracting.

A blazer, cardigan etc will detract from the dress, and won't go with it.

If you haven't got a mac or trench, as long as you take it off immediately, I'd take a lightweight hooded waterproof.

The duster coat and cape on the previous page look cheap. You don't have to spend loads to get something that doesn't look cheap.

Could you go for a soft jacket like this? https://www.nancymac.co.uk/collections/shrugs-jackets-and-coats/products/lilliana-jacket-in-deep-red-velvet-1

Or just a lovely scarf/shawl to wrap over your shoulders in a hurry?

I just think that a standard coat, unless it's made from a really obviously 'luxury' fabric like velvet, or obviously made beautifully, tends to detract from the occasion.

Oh, that one's nice.

HarrietJet · 11/09/2023 11:05

I like that too.

Superlambaanana · 11/09/2023 11:08

@Saxendi i love that! Here's the designer version too:

I need to unwatch this thread or I'm going to end up buying one of these recommendations and I don't have any weddings coming up!!! 😊

DuchessOfSausage · 11/09/2023 11:11

I like the velvet jacket. The Zara kimono is ok but I don't like viscose and it might look a bit like a dressing gown.

tattygrl · 11/09/2023 12:38

I'm evidently in the minority but I think the coat is stunning and would go perfectly with the dress - orange and blue are a great combination, especially with it being a dark blue and a burnt orange! I think it's stunning.

I agree.

And as the OP was looking for something for the possibility of inclement weather, far more suitable than Nancy Mac jackets and kimonos- both of which will be useless in keeping the rain off and not much better if it's cold.

OP is only going to be wearing the outer layer for a very short part of the day anyway.

Smittenkitchen · 11/09/2023 15:00

Is £5 per wear good value?? 😳

Holdmysunhat · 11/09/2023 15:17

I love a cape! Feels so gossip girl.

They’re out of fashion right now and very forgiving on sizing so you might pick up a bargain on Vinted.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 11/09/2023 15:19

I don't think the coat is very "wedding" but I bloody love it!

Medlady · 11/09/2023 15:24

I would go for a coat, too. One longer than the dress. Burnt orange would be fab. A high wool
oercentage is essential though imo

mistermagpie · 11/09/2023 15:38

I must be on my own here because I think the dress is really boring (but classic and totally fine for a wedding, just not very interesting) and the coat is nice!

What would bother me most is the coat is black and orange and the dress is navy. But if you like orange and velvet then what about something like this?

This is gorgeous. Absolutely lovely.

IF you don't mind navy with black, this?

I'm with you. I much prefer the coat.

Smittenkitchen · 11/09/2023 16:33

I think the dress doesn't look great on the model but would be really beautiful on someone else.

G21 · 11/09/2023 16:42

They don’t really match or look good together at all. The dress is also rather plain.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 11/09/2023 16:53

I would look around the local charity shops.
The dress is beautiful.

Sassncurls · 11/09/2023 16:58

Elegant dress, coat fab, buy that anyway!
Together not sure, coats funky, dress is classic...why do you need a big coat....you'll not be outside that long...you'd be better spending on cheaper frock coat, that can be worn in many variations...glam up with orange leather gloves, clutch and heels, all can be used again. Could pinch a man's suit jacket and sex ut up? Xx

TheWitchCirce · 11/09/2023 17:07

(whispers) I really like the original coat.
