Coat for wedding: is this good or terrible?

I have a navy dress for a friend’s wedding at the end of September in the UK. Yeah, it might rain. But I only have a full-on winter coat or a boring raincoat which is the wrong length anyway.

So I have been down a duster coat rabbit hole and cannot decide.

This is the dress.

I love this burnt orange coat. Not available in my size, but if I can find something like it, is it an ok combination?

You won't need a coat for a wedding at the end of sept. Either get a smart jacket or pashmina.

PinkRoses1245 · 11/09/2023 17:17

I wouldn’t bother with a coat - just take a shawl or pashmina.

crackersforcrackers · 11/09/2023 17:20

Also a voice in the minority but I love the coat! I think Navy and Orange/Bronze is a great combo and the coat is youthful. Some of these suggestions of beige jackets and shrugs will make you look grandmother-of-the-bride.

Totally!! Pashminas are so dated now I can't believe people are suggesting them, there is the (dreaded) blazer option but the OPs original coat suggestion is much more modern and she could wear it afterwards.

Holdmysunhat · 11/09/2023 18:26

I loved the coat design too but don’t love the fabric composition so would pass on that basis. Polyester and acrylic won’t wear well and this is relatively pricey for what is essentially a piece of plastic.

Nasty gal from the vibe of the shop is pitched at 20 somethings. Maybe you’d find the odd thing there and I bought and returned a pair of cheap (fun) boots in the sale as they were too small. Clothes not so much.

I actually like the cape idea. I prefer something with a little more shape. Maybe this? https://nrbyclothing.com/products/esme-wool-cape-coat

How are you supposed to answer your phone or scratch your ear in that cape? Your arms are tethered to your sides, pretty much 😂

These fine cashmere wraps are great and not too expensive. I got one in a different colour to wear over a dress for a wedding last year. They are so fine you can also wear them again over winter with a hoxton knot as a scarf.https://www.houseofbruar.com/fine-cashmere-wrap-orange/

I love the coat! The dress is okay too, a bit meh for my taste, but hey - the combination looks good to me.

LivelyBlake · 11/09/2023 19:13

I like the Debenhams coat too, OP.

fernsandlilies · 11/09/2023 19:20

I love that red/orange Winser London coat

mdinbc · 11/09/2023 19:29

I know I saw an influencer show a velvet coat last year in a teal colour, but I don't remember where it was from. I thought it was very sharp, and would look good even with jeans. This one is similar:

DusterCoatRabbitHole · 11/09/2023 01:05

Hang on what even is a wrap? It’s the same thing as a shawl, isn’t it? Would you go for a different colour or try to match the dress?

I think dusky pink goes beautifully with navy.

AnneKipankitoo · 11/09/2023 19:41

They have beautiful umbrellas on Fulton website.
A beautiful wrap might help if it’s cool. You could fasten it with a brooch if you have no hands left !

Solonge · 11/09/2023 19:56

Love them both. An outfit is anything you choose to wear in the same way a beach ready body is anyones body, be you!

Rina66 · 11/09/2023 20:45

What colour shoes are you wearing? I think a green coat would look lovely too, maybe with orange shoes?

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/09/2023 20:50

@DusterCoatRabbitHole

You don’t need a coat. just suck up being cold it doesn’t sound like you’re going to be outside all that long.

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/09/2023 20:52

What ever you do - NO PASHMINA!! So old fashioned

Vivfor60 · 11/09/2023 21:10

The Free People coat is stunning. I wish I hadn't seen it!

GameOverBoys · 11/09/2023 21:19

tattygrl · 11/09/2023 12:38

I'm evidently in the minority but I think the coat is stunning and would go perfectly with the dress - orange and blue are a great combination, especially with it being a dark blue and a burnt orange! I think it's stunning.

I agree. I thinks it’s fab and I don’t like many of the other suggestions.
Clothing taste is individual, just get something you love.

thelittlefox · 11/09/2023 22:20

I love that coat!

Funny how there's a lot of people baulking at the coat being manmade fibres - the dress is too. Polyester lined with sweaty static -crackling polyester, no matter what you wear over it.

Asking £169 for a basic polyester dress is actually rude.

DusterCoatRabbitHole · 11/09/2023 22:24

Thank you all so much for thoughtful and interesting ideas. I especially love all the orange!

And beautiful jackets and the kimono, and velvet and sparkly things, but they would also suffer in rain.

I think I’ve identified a gap in my wardrobe, and that is something between a proper winter coat and a short, slightly scruffy raincoat.

It is probably Reiss or similar that does the job. Not hugely exciting but good looking and very useful.

If it’s still hot and dry, I won’t need anything. If it rains, then between home, church and reception, if I only take an umbrella my dress will be drippy.

I do still really like the original coat as an inspiration, and would be very tempted if they had it in my size, but hadn’t thought about points lots of people have made, including the combination of orange-and-black herringbone with navy.

OneFrenchEgg · 11/09/2023 22:32

I love the coat and am 'meh' about the dress - I'd be now looking for a dress to match my new coat 😂 not a shawl or a bolero type jacket for the dress, what is the coat for? Church and walking? Car park to venue only? Will you be cold inside?

Dillane · 11/09/2023 23:00

A wrap would be lovely. The dress is beautiful.
