Sosandar. Who makes it. For who? Why is the styling so weird

Every time I see it on the Marks & Spencer website it just looks weird like an old catalogue from the 1980s

Their styling is really dated but some people like that look.

fantasmasgoria1 · 09/09/2023 06:15

On the website at the bottom it says our story. It was started by two British women.

BlueKaftan · 09/09/2023 06:15

It looks culturally different.

FlappyFish · 09/09/2023 06:31

The styling reminds me of the John Moores, Littlewoods, Freemans catalogue my Mum used to have in the 80’s/90’s. I think we are used to seeing the white background. It’s all aspirational European holiday.

I’ve never ordered from them. Seen some bits but think it’s generally aimed a lot older than me. (Early 40’s)

MehtotheChristmasrunup · 09/09/2023 06:39

Didn’t they used to be in M&Co ? I always thought their stuff looked a bit better than the normal range ie leather skirt rather than PU.

Agree about the white background versus the catalogue model pose on the harbour wall 🙂

ActDottie · 09/09/2023 08:01

I got two tops from there a while ago and omg I hated them! The material was all shiny! Haven’t ordered since.

Janieforever · 09/09/2023 08:05

I was literally thinking this the other day. I was browsing markies website and I found myself thinking many of the pieces were very dated in their styling. A sort of 90s vibe.

barbarahunter · 09/09/2023 08:07

I am not very fashionable and even I noticed that their clothes seem dated and something a bit 'off'.

StoneTheCrone · 09/09/2023 08:08

It's a bit Wallis meets Roman.

friskybivalves · 09/09/2023 08:09

I feel it's aimed at the young Gloria Hunniford, or people who think they would like to live in Lymington but have never been there. And yearn for a cruise hol.

Having said that, I bought a black 'fit'n'flare' dress there this summer and it is great.

bluegreenandcoral · 09/09/2023 08:13

I actually like their stuff when it pops up but I’m aware it’s quite dated so rarely buy it!

I work with a couple of women who buy clothes from there and they always look nice TBF. Just not particularly on trend. I think their clothes are quite flattering.

Nitgel · 09/09/2023 08:13

Lol it seems to be all seasalt in lymington

EvelynBeatrice · 09/09/2023 08:17

I ordered from them for the first time at the start of this summer - a pair of low wedge nude suede espadrilles - enough of a lift to be flattering and not too high for comfort. Absolutely love them and haven’t seen the same heel height anywhere else, even in Spain where I assume that they are made!

jugggugg · 09/09/2023 08:17

I think the clothes are ok, it's the styling that's dated

Gwenhwyfar · 09/09/2023 08:18

I like it, except that a lot of the stuff is too expensive for me. I wasn't aware it was date. I got a long denim dress from there that's OK.

EvelynBeatrice · 09/09/2023 08:20

And I prefer models to - shock horror - look happy and stand in a way that enables you to see the clothes you’re thinking of buying. Skinny weird druggy looking miseries arranged in strange often over sexualised poses which don’t show the entire garment are not to my taste, although I’m sure the male photographer gets lots of praise for his arty style.

You could ask the same about brands with artier photography though. I have wondered who designs all these baggy oversized clothes shown on extremely tall, androgynous models and who those are aimed at, because I'm clearly not their target market! I've never ordered from Sosander and it's not really my style, but at least you can see what the clothes look like...

NatashaDancing · 09/09/2023 09:43

I don't know who its target demographic would be. It isn't me.

The styling is odd. It seems peculiar to have the expense of a photo shoot in Barcelona and Paris for clothes in that price range. (Unless they're using stock photo backgrounds and slotting them in behind the real photos of the model)

CinnamonJellyBeans · 09/09/2023 10:13

I'm always fascinated by the Sosander catalogue and actually spend time thinking about the demographic every time I see it.

I always imagine ageing trophy wife, implants and expensive highlights and dentistry. She always has a tan from her holidays. She doesn't have a real job.

I feel a little jealous of her sometimes as she doesn't get tired from using her brain all the time and I want her long legs.

Blimey and I thought I was the most judgemental snob on here.

I just got "clothes that aren't for me"

CinnamonJellyBeans · 09/09/2023 10:27

Don't worry @NatashaDancing , you are still the most judgemental snob on here.

minipie · 09/09/2023 10:35

Quite enjoying this thread 😆

I think it’s for women who don’t follow fashion but want to look “pretty”. Probably an older demographic but not exclusively. So eg lots of fitted dresses when everywhere else was only selling smocks and sacks.

MotherofGorgons · 09/09/2023 10:49

Quite enjoying this thread too! The colours and fabrics are a bit harsh for me, so haven't bought anything.
I dont know whose target I am. No ones probably? Those sad droopy baggy miserable teenage models don't speak to me either.
