Can you be too old for dungarees?

I'm 51! And I've seen a pair I really, really like :/

Haven't worn dungarees since primary school - Would I be able to get away with it without looking like an overgrown toddler!!?

I'd say 4 is the cut-off for dungarees.

Hiddiddleyho · 24/07/2023 16:26

Go for it!

VeridicalVagabond · 24/07/2023 16:27

My mum's in her 60's and has several pairs, I think they look great. Get them if you like them!

Hiddiddleyho · 24/07/2023 16:27

Just seen the other reply ha ha
I just don't see why that's the case!
Wear what you like. Wear what makes you feel happy.

monpetitlapin · 24/07/2023 16:28

We had this thread about 6 months ago, and there was a split between about 30% of people saying "about 4 or 5", about 40% of people saying "no, wear them whenever" and about 30% of people saying "about 40".
So the bell curve suggests you can wear them whenever.

Dominoeffecter · 24/07/2023 16:30

I tried a pair on and looked like a kids tv presenter. Try some on and if you like them on you, wear them.

ArcticBells · 24/07/2023 16:31

If they look good on you then yes of course!

Haha that's what I'm afraid of! At best I can aim for the quirky art teacher look if I splash a bit of paint on myself Grin

Depends on the colour I think.

AuntieMarys · 24/07/2023 16:43

I'm 63 and fancy a pair....but need 35 inch inside leg

Wiccan · 24/07/2023 16:47

I have 3 pairs . 2 denim and 1 cotton wide leg black pair . Go for it !

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 24/07/2023 16:47

I am 61 and still wear straight leg, conventional denim, dungarees and with a jumper they look like jeans, but very comfortable around the waist! Go for it, but find the pair that makes you feel good, so maybe try different cuts, colours, fabrics and manufacturers to get the right pair for you.

Sugarplumfury · 24/07/2023 16:49

I’m 62 and love them. I have 3 pairs - black denim, olive green twill cotton and a stone colour twill cotton pair. A plain short sleeve or long sleeve t shirt or thin plain jumper and I feel comfy and happy. I’m a short size 12.

Jongleterre · 24/07/2023 16:53

It's a garment where size not age matters.

If you're big it's a no.

LolaSmiles · 24/07/2023 16:55

At heart I think people should wear what makes them feel good.

Personal opinions on dungarees and age depends on the colour, cut, fabric, and how the outfit is styled. A nice, well-cut pair in a colour that's flattering can work on most people at any way in my opinion.

Certain colours and styles have children's TV presented vibes and others give off a "I'm wacky me" vibe. Neither of those things work in my opinion above late teens/early 20s.

Whataretheodds · 24/07/2023 16:56

My mum (75) looks supercool in hers

ISeeMisledPeople · 24/07/2023 16:57

I'm basically the same age as you, and my mum wears them - so you have a few years to go before you are too old :D

Lollygaggle · 24/07/2023 16:57

I would also consider, particularly in cold weather when you are layered up, how long it will take you to disrobe when you need an emergency wee.

RoseBucket · 24/07/2023 16:57

What are they like, I quite fancy lose jersey wide leg ones but also not sure.

KirstenBlest · 24/07/2023 16:58

@AuntieMarys , in a loose style you could probably wear ones with an inside leg shorter than 35"

Kissedbyfire1 · 24/07/2023 16:59

I’m usually all for “wear what you like, whatever your age, but funnily enough I think dungarees are for toddlers or old ladies (I’m an old lady). Anyone in between just looks wrong, especially women in their 30s who wear them with stripey t shirts and their hair in plaits / bunches. You know who you are.

This is probably spot on. Especially the lucy&yak crowd. I don't think I've seen a single person wearing theirs that looks good but they all seem very happy so I suppose that's what matters.

Summer2424 · 24/07/2023 17:04

Hi @ILikeDinosaurs i'm in my 40's and wear denim dungarees. Never too old, go for it xx

LolaSmiles · 24/07/2023 17:04

I was thinking of the L&Y crowd when I posted

They do some nice pairs of dungarees in quite muted colours and can easily be styled in a more toned down way.

The people who post the most tend to have quite loud styles.
