Can you be too old for dungarees?

I'm 51! And I've seen a pair I really, really like :/

Haven't worn dungarees since primary school - Would I be able to get away with it without looking like an overgrown toddler!!?

Meryl Streep looks amazing in her pairs in Mama Mia!! If she can pull it off, so can you OP!

SirChenjins
Where did you find a nice linen pair?

I'm hoping to get a pair of linen wide leg ones but all the ones I've seen so far have quite a cheap look to them with thin linen.

johnworf · 24/07/2023 18:59

I'm 57 and wear my Yaks almost everyday. 😁

That's how I like to imagine I would look in my head!
Perhaps on a Greek island somewhere rather than a big city...

My only issue and that I just can't get past is the loo. How do you go to the loo without wiping the floor with them. It's fine if you're at home but going out in them?! Not if it's going to be more than an hour or the possibility exists that I'm drink something. I'm not as "bendy" as I once was. The whole bending at the knees, not touching the toilet bowl, getting the pee entirely in the the toilet, peeing without getting pee on my clothes and worrying about the clothes touching the floor is more than I can handle. So it's not about age, it's about how fit one is.
I love jumpsuits, I love looking at them and seeing women wearing them but I can't contemplate the idea of wearing one right now. They fall into the same category as dungarees as a bonus they both make me look like a potato too.
I also waxed down there to look nicer at the beach and peeing while standing without peeing down my legs has become... difficult and impossible.

Oceanus · 24/07/2023 19:44

*might drink

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 24/07/2023 20:19

Most of the women on here wearing them seem to be over 55 well into their 70s.
That could indicate they are worn by older women who want to look a bit ‘alternative’. Tbh I’ve not seen anyone young in them for ages so I guess why not.

Gingerboy22 · 24/07/2023 20:23

In the 1970s I had red ones and denim ones. Somewhere I have a pic of me in the denims.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/07/2023 20:23

I’m 52 and love mine.

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in

neveradullmoment99 · 24/07/2023 20:42

Oh...Is there an age limit? Ooops! Guess I broke it at 55! I have been wearing dungarees for years. Wear what you like. I have numerous pairs.

RedLem0nade · 24/07/2023 20:46

I got a pair recently at age 40 and I love them. Khaki coloured. I wear them with Birkenstock gizeh sandals and a white T shirt. Usually “styled” with a nice silk scarf as a hairband. They make me feel like a land girl from WW2 and the more I wear them the less of a toss I give how anyone else perceives them!😁

Kissedbyfire1 · 24/07/2023 16:59

I’m usually all for “wear what you like, whatever your age, but funnily enough I think dungarees are for toddlers or old ladies (I’m an old lady). Anyone in between just looks wrong, especially women in their 30s who wear them with stripey t shirts and their hair in plaits / bunches. You know who you are.

Um...
Guilty as charged

Aged 56

I don't care 😁

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 24/07/2023 20:55

My DM loves her Lucy and Yak dungarees and has them in several colours and fabrics. She’s 82. She looks good in them too.

I sort of get what you mean but I see younger women who wear dungarees and my 40 year old SIL has recently started wearing smarter black print dungarees as she’s pregnant but also they’re handy for her with her 5 year old son. She’s usually a Cos, Comptoir des Cottoniers, Arket sort of style so hardly alternative.

Right...so you're fine to wear them because you're elderly?

FuppingEll · 24/07/2023 17:02

This is probably spot on. Especially the lucy&yak crowd. I don't think I've seen a single person wearing theirs that looks good but they all seem very happy so I suppose that's what matters.

They're fucking practical and comfy, that's why they seem so happy Grin. I have a pair. I look absolutely ridiculous in them (a bit fat and very short, with a large chest) but fml I love wearing them. Pockets, not clingy or tight, easy to breastfeed in, easy to layer up/down.

lordloveadog · 24/07/2023 21:06

I gave them up after preschool and am now entirely the wrong shape for them, but if they suit you and you like them, why not?

My DH actually bought himself a pair last week for DIY and my extremely cool almost-teenager immediately stole them. I admit I conspired in this because they made DH look like an overgrown toddler where DS looks fabulous.

Alternative? I’m as conservative as they come! No spiky hair, pigtails, piercings or tattoos, and definitely don’t do the wacky children’s presenter look.

HouseofHolbein · 24/07/2023 21:50

I've rediscovered a live of dungarees. I'm 53. They have lots of pockets which makes me happy.

Husband reckons I look like a kids tv presenter but I don't actually care what he thinks 🤣🤣

Fandaisy · 24/07/2023 22:06

Also never seen anyone under late 40s-60s wearing them, same as very garish jumpsuits and pink hair

The new wardrobe for age 50-65 hippies

Go for it !!

FastFood · 24/07/2023 22:14

Nope. Never too old.
I'd even say that the older, the cooler. "Older" ladies with dungarees are generally super cool and stylish.
Dungarees are also great to all kind of body shapes.
Go for it!

SemperIdem · 24/07/2023 22:16

Dungarees aren’t for me - I feel like like my boobs would get in the way. However - I see women of all ages wearing them and they look great.

So if you like them, buy them, wear them, enjoy them.

Olika · 24/07/2023 22:17

Try them on and if you like them then get them. Personally I wear whatever I want and like.

Dalekjastninerels · 24/07/2023 22:18

If you are over 5 yes 😆🤔😁

Wear what you like OP

Sugarplumfury · 24/07/2023 22:41

That could indicate they are worn by older women who want to look a bit ‘alternative’. . I don’t aim to look alternative . It just makes a change from the other comfy outfit I live in - jeans and a tee shirt or jumper. My hair style is very traditional, my makeup very simple when I wear it and just a watch and stud earrings for accessories. I suppose it’s ‘alternative ‘ in that where I live, which is a bog standard northern city suburb, I don’t see many women my age wearing them.
