Can you be too old for dungarees?

I'm 51! And I've seen a pair I really, really like :/

Haven't worn dungarees since primary school - Would I be able to get away with it without looking like an overgrown toddler!!?

I’m a tubby 51 year old and also quite short.
I have a pair of black linen wide legged dungarees from The White co that I love. I wear them with a vest and trainers of flip flops, I will be putting them away when it’s colder though as they are summer wear.

Gingerboy22 · 24/07/2023 17:08

I see various women in the SE area where I live and they tend to be either hippy type mums 30s and 40s or the older women with spikey hair type. I've tried to choose my words carefully but I'm sure someone will be offended. So be it. They're very popular in certain sectors. There's even shops in Brighton that sell only dungarees. So no you can never be too old for dungarees if you like that type of clothing.

HappiDaze · 24/07/2023 17:14

My friend in her 50's has a pair of Lucy & Yak dungarees and I think they look hideous even though she wears them well and they're an understated colour.

IaltagDhubh · 24/07/2023 17:22

I’m wearing black seasalt dungarees today. I’m 42.

I don’t think it’s an age thing, or a size thing, but more a style thing. Women who generally wear more tailored elegant classic clothes would look odd in dungarees. Personally, I would look daft if I tried to pull off a more elegant tailored look, so I shall stick with my dungarees.

That said, I did see a woman the other day, slightly older than me, wearing bright pink dungarees. I definitely got a Playschool vibe from that. But she likes them, so why not. I’ll stick to darker colours for mine though!

DampSummer · 24/07/2023 17:24

Mid 40/ma and wearing them today and wore a pair yesterday...

KnittedCardi · 24/07/2023 17:27

Uh ho. I'm sitting here at 58, in my L&Y black dungs. My DD26 bought them for me, as she thought they would look good. Do you know what? They really do, and they are very comfy. So there 😂

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/07/2023 17:29

I plan to be buried in mine. 😃

OldTinHat · 24/07/2023 17:32

I have friends in their 60s and 70s who look fab in them!

Sugarplumfury · 24/07/2023 17:44

This is probably spot on. Especially the lucy&yak crowd. I don't think I've seen a single person wearing theirs that looks good but they all seem very happy so I suppose that's what matters.

My black denim ones are L&Y. I don't go in for the TV presenter/hipster effect . Just v plain t shirts and trainers and a normal blunt cut un-dyed bob. The whole patterned, bright or patterned dungarees, stripey tops and rainbow dyed hair or short spikey cuts I see around on all ages, isn't for me. But as you say, if someone likes that look then so be it.

RuthW · 24/07/2023 17:48

Yes. If you are over 110 you really shouldn't be wearing them.

I wear what I like.

GiddyGladys · 24/07/2023 17:57

I've never seen a single person look good in them over the age of 3.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 24/07/2023 17:59

Goodness no.

I wear them for work 80% of the time and have a reasonably professional role (albeit in a casual environment).

NatashaDancing · 24/07/2023 18:03

I'm 64 and I wouldn't be seen dead in dungarees but that's because I don't like dungarees.

There is no age limit on dungarees. Go for it. Tbh, there's not an age limit on anything really.

Your post and 'IaltagDhubh's are a breath of fresh air.

I’ve just bought a denim pair and a dark grey thin linen pair, both of which are boyfriend fitting and worn three quarter length. My 23 year old DD - who is brutally honest when appraising my style - assured me I look really good in them. I’ve been wearing them with my Arizonas and fitted short sleeve t-shirts. I’m 54, five one and size 10/12.

Kissedbyfire1 · 24/07/2023 16:59

I’m usually all for “wear what you like, whatever your age, but funnily enough I think dungarees are for toddlers or old ladies (I’m an old lady). Anyone in between just looks wrong, especially women in their 30s who wear them with stripey t shirts and their hair in plaits / bunches. You know who you are.

That’s me described to a T. I’ve no idea what other people think but I love my style and I’m happy so that’s all that’s important.

SirChenjins · 24/07/2023 18:08

Oh, and I don’t have spiky hair 😂

SirenSays · 24/07/2023 18:09

I don't think any clothes have an age limit. But imo they don't look good on anyone.

Bananaspliff · 24/07/2023 18:10

It’s a no from me. Adults in dungarees, brightly multicoloured or cartoon character clothing give me strong Timmy Mallett vibes I’m afraid.

ILikeDungs · 24/07/2023 18:18

I'm 65. See username.

camelfinger · 24/07/2023 18:23

They’ve been around for quite a while now so don’t think it’s an age thing. I think that most styles start off with the younger crowd and work their way up through the age groups. For example, it’s quite rare to see a young person in skinny jeans now but you see lots of older people wearing them. Dungarees are probably the same but just a bit behind. If you feel comfortable wearing them, then go for it.

Sussurations · 24/07/2023 18:30

I’m torn on this but I tend to agree with pp that they are one of those garments that look better on both younger and older women than those in the middle. So say up to about 25 and then from about 45 or perhaps older. And the rest of the outfit should be sharp/minimal/plain with the bare minimum in the way of accessories. But it very much depends what look you’re going for.

Thehonestybox · 24/07/2023 18:34

As an adult you need to style them a particular way to avoid the cbbc presenter look. I saw a woman who looked about 50 wearing dungarees the other day and me and partner both commented how good she looked. They wear black, and she had a white tight t shirt underneath, loads of chunky costume jewelery and deep red lipstick.

SallyWD · 24/07/2023 18:40

I really, really dislike dungarees! Kind of looks like a babygro to me.I think they look awful on women and even worse on men. Having said all that,I also think people should wear what they like and feel good in. If you feel comfortable and happy in them then go for it.

And that's a fair point.
