Going strong for more than 8 years! Full of great reviews, reports of empties and despair over our ever growing stashes!

@Experiment627 I'm going to use up all the makeup I've already got then reassess what I want to wear going forward, because it'll probably take a few years and I'll have age-related changes. Whatever I buy in future I'm going to check every single ingredient and not purchase anything with shite in it.

It makes me cross they put potentially dangerous things into makeup, a product we don't need to use. Why not use the good ingredients and raise the price if necessary to do so? If we can't afford it, it doesn't matter, we don't need it anyway. I feel it's yet another way society sticks two fingers up at women. Not only are we expected to do everything and be everything to all people, nobody even cares if we live or die. It's a bit much really

Fraaahnces · 01/09/2023 04:44

@IndianSummer78 - while the ingredients in makeup are scary, it’s the ones in food that concern me most! Plastics, petrochemicals, etc… all because they’re cheaper than ACTUAL food.

Peridot1 · 01/09/2023 08:28

A couple of empties here again.

Curel foaming face wash. I’m not a fan of foaming cleansers but it’s the pump that does the foaming in this one so it’s fine. Nice and gentle. I like the Curel range. Have lots of other cleansers in stash so won’t repurchase for now.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus Sub D Neck cream. Neck was looking very wrinkly partly as a result of losing weight and this was recommended. Was ok. Not planning on repurchasing.

Votary Super Seed Oil Night Booster Drops. Not technically an empty but tried to use it the other night and it’s gone off. Smells terrible.

However I succumbed to the latest Caroline Hirons kit yesterday so that will up my stash again!

Experiment627 · 01/09/2023 08:32

@IndianSummer78 I guess it does disproportionately affect women... but some men wear makeup too... anyhoo like @Fraaahnces the shite they put in food is also concerning. I bet doughnuts are full of crap 😭

@Experiment627 - have a read of the book Ultra Processed People by Chris Van Tulleken. What is in our food is scary!

Experiment627 · 01/09/2023 10:37

@Peridot1 I have such a crush on those twins!

I was literally eating a doughnut when I read this just now 😂 In my defence, it’s from the local bakery and it’s amazing!

Experiment627 · 01/09/2023 10:58

@CorneliaStreet that is so funny!!!!

@CorneliaStreet - I want a doughnut now!

MavisMcMinty · 01/09/2023 12:16

Doughnuts are the reason I want a deep fat fryer, the only reason, although I daresay I’d also make chips in it if I had one. My OH just says “But what would you do with all the used oil?” and I remember my Mum keeping her chip pan in the saucepan cupboard, filled with congealed/hardened lard and wonder why I can’t just leave the fat in the fryer - none of died from my Mum’s chips.

Yeh I've started reading ingredients lists and trying to only buy things that are made of food! I've always eaten quite plainly so I'm not finding it too difficult. The ingredients list on some "food" though is shocking

@Experiment627 the thing is nobody expects men to wear makeup and very few do. Men are allowed to look like shite and not be judged for it, women aren't and will be judged. I like playing around with makeup, I'm wearing it for myself (often nobody else will see me) but eventually I'll probably move away from wearing it when the current stash is used up because I don't want to have to check ingredients all the time

Has anyone used those eyelid tapes (I'm not sure what they're called) that are supposed to fix droopy eyelids? Mine are going hooded with age. I checked my friends eyes the other day (she's 70+) and her upper eyelid is sitting on her eyelashes, like they're holding it up and stopping it from closing up her eyes. If that happens to me there'll be no point in wearing eye makeup anyway because it won't be visible and that's my favourite bit. I've read about the eyelid tape but I can't understand how it works, do you put two pieces on and they stick to each other, somehow holding droopy lids up?

Fraaahnces · 01/09/2023 13:27

Because we are a household full of people with anaphylaxis to different bloody foods and I have coeliac disease too, I feel like I read ingredients lists more than anything else - ever. I have a theory that if I can’t be bothered trying to pronounce an ingredient or don’t recognize it as having once been alive, it’s not going in the trolley. (Unless it’s coke no sugar, which is my secret vice.)
@Peridot1 I bloody love Curel! That cleanser changed my whole attitude towards foaming cleanser! (Their makeup removing balm is wonderful too - and very portable and clean to travel with as well!) It’s on sale this month at my local K&J beauty place. It’s in the shopping cart waiting for payday.

Peridot1 · 01/09/2023 13:38

@Fraaahnces - it is a lovely range for sure. Great for dry and sensitive skin. Boots stock it here. Although only larger stores. Their hydrating mist is fabulous too.

@MavisMcMinty We’ve got a deep fat fryer, which we use mainly for chips and calamari. We only change the oil after a few uses and we just put it away in the cupboard with the oil in between uses. Probably gross, but none of us have died yet!

We do change the oil if we do something messy like croquetas though.

I haven’t used them but have seen them demonstrated on QVC. The models are very proficient at applying them but I imagine it takes a lot of practise. They just widen their eyes and place them in the crease of the eye, and you can apply eyeshadow over the top.

Which reminds me of my friend who worked as the dresser to a very famous historical romantic novelist, and her main duty was to apply “face tape” to all the sags and wrinkles. She was so unspeakably rude to my friend that she walked out after one week, left her with half her face hanging down.

Barbara Cartland springs to mind !😂

@MavisMcMinty

Haha nods with wry smile. Nuff said.

Fraaahnces · 01/09/2023 17:08

@Peridot1 I think that mist was for the UK market only. I can’t find the bloody thing anywhere else and I’d be all over that one if I could get it!

IndianSummer78 · 01/09/2023 17:30

Interesting @Peridot1 I might have to investigate Curel next time I'm in Boots

Lol @MavisMcMinty sounds like the wrinkly one deserved it 😂

MavisMcMinty · 01/09/2023 17:34

Heh, she sounds as ghastly IRL as you’d expect her to be. Name dropping all over the shop, pretending her famous step-granddaughter wrote to her on a daily basis for her sage all-knowing advice.

Peridot1 · 01/09/2023 17:36

@Fraaahnces - that’s a shame. I’m heading your way in February and could bring you some. And anything else you like that you can’t get hold of easily.

@IndianSummer78 - it’s a nice range. Not expensive. I can’t get it in my local Boots but it’s on line. I came across it through Caroline Hirons.

Experiment627 · 01/09/2023 21:47

@CorneliaStreet totes unrealted to beauty but have you seen "The summer I turned pretty"? - they play a lot of Taylor Swift. And yes I may be turning 50 next year but I am still a teenager at heart 🤣

@MavisMcMinty now I want a deep fat fryer! Not only for doughnuts but all the other delicious fried food!!
Can you make doughnuts in an air fryer? 🧐
BTW LOVE your friend!

@Experiment627 I haven’t yet, I will have to check it out.

My daughter and I were very excited by Taylor’s twitter announcement today that there’s going to be a film of the Eras tour. We didn’t manage to get tickets when they were on sale earlier in the summer, so this will have to be the next best thing. Love the Reputation tour film on Netflix.
