Where to buy "old lady" nightie

DionneInCanada · 14/07/2023 19:25

I think that's the best way to sum up what I'm after for my 90 year old mum. Her request "to have a decent nightie for when I inevitably have to go into hospital" 😮

I looked at M&S and John Lewis online but nothing right.

So requirements are
below knee length but not too long
Short sleeves (not straps)
Preferably not plain white.
Not too big/gaping around the neck and chest
No itchy lace trim

Any ideas where to look please 😊

I am not quite 90 but find these very comfortable:

Not on the High Street have lots. Most are white and lacy, but I bought my DM lots from here, and also, perhaps oddly, or maybe not, from a local museum shop, who stock lots of cotton and silk handmade traditional nighties. Not cheap mind you.

Bon Marche

Thanks again everyone. Really really helpful 😊

My Lands End nighties are the comfiest nighties I have ever worn. I wear no others. My requirements are very similar to your mother's!

Slenderella (what a marvellous name!)

Please stop with the ageism.

You described the kind of thing you're looking for. There was no need to add the additional 'explanation'.

Don't be a plonker

There's nothing wrong with admitting that a lot of older ladies might prefer a particular style of nightwear. It's a fact that we do prefer to go for comfort and good quality material (and 'washes well') as we get older. Same with shoes - we want our feet to be comfortable.

Younger people have different tastes, it's just life I'm afraid. Nothing wrong with it.

I might like an old lady nightie as well

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 14/07/2023 21:46

A couple of years ago I really wanted an old lady nightie and my friend sent me one for my birthday from Amazon. Not somewhere I would have thought but it's great

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 14/07/2023 21:46

I was in my twenties at the time

Yes I second Slenderella for traditional nightwear that my mother in her eighties loves.

OMG what have you done to me!!

I have some very very very very old powel craft nighties, white Victorian style things in the wardrobe, had them probably over 30 years

I remembered the name when you posted

And now look what they do, gorgeous lovely lovely prints and PJs and all sorts!!!

TreesAtSea · 14/07/2023 22:04

I'd echo Bon Marche. They have quite a few so hopefully some at least would be suitable.

FourChimneys · 14/07/2023 22:06

BIWI are you OK? You seem a bit stressed out this evening.

I used to wear Landsend nighties but the quality suddenly got worse. I don't know if they have improved again. I currently have two from Debenham which are several years old. I hope they last even longer as they cannot be replaced.

FWIW I have been referring to my nightwear as "old lady nighties" since I was about 25. I don't think anyone has come to any harm 😂

Teenagehorrorbag · 14/07/2023 22:07

Our local indoor (every day) market has a stall which sells all the old lady stuff like petticoats and nighties. MIL (96) always gets her things there.

FourChimneys · 14/07/2023 22:08

I have just Googled "old lady nightdress" and it's a thing! Loads of THEM all over the internet.

Sorry to disappoint you BIWI.

Would something like this suit her tastes? Seems quite a few different options on Debenhams :)
