Where to buy "old lady" nightie

DionneInCanada · 14/07/2023 19:25

I think that's the best way to sum up what I'm after for my 90 year old mum. Her request "to have a decent nightie for when I inevitably have to go into hospital" 😮

I looked at M&S and John Lewis online but nothing right.

So requirements are
below knee length but not too long
Short sleeves (not straps)
Preferably not plain white.
Not too big/gaping around the neck and chest
No itchy lace trim

Any ideas where to look please 😊

Just to add, I think 'old lady' in this particular instance was not only ok but important because the op's mum will have specific needs because of her age. Calling yourself 'old' when you're barely 50 might be a thing on here, but the skin of a 90 year old is not the same as that of a 50 year old or a 70 year old, so descriptions like 'high neck' or 'sensible' wouldn't cut it.

  • Please stop with the ageism.

You described the kind of thing you're looking for. There was no need to add the additional 'explanation'.*

DD is 25 but always wears nighties like you describe OP. She gets hers from Boyes, usually for about a tenner.

I'm with @BIWI The 'old lady' bit was unnecessary.

What annoys me the most is that 'sensible cotton nighties' always seem to come in white, pale pink or pale blue. I have been looking for a black one for years.

Its for an old lady, why is it unnecessary?

EmmaPaella · 15/07/2023 09:51

Old lady nightie here is completely fine, in my opinion. My parents found it harder to buy things my elderly grandmothers wanted/needed even from places like M&S as the years went on.

Long Tall Sally do a black nightie with very subtle star detailing - be warned though first couple of washes the glitter likes to shed!

Thank you. I’ll have a look, but am far from long and tall!

‘A nightdress for my elderly mother’ has very different connotations than ‘An old lady nightdress’ imo.

This is the verbal equivalent of putting skirts on table legs for the squeamish

Elderly = old
old = elderly

An item of clothing can be worn by anybody. It is not young or old. The person is elderly. Whatever nightdress she chooses is just a piece of cloth that can be worn by anybody who wishes to wear it.

I disagree Remus with because in this specific case the fact that the op's mum is old is significant. She wasn't using the term disrespectfully .

I agree that she wasn’t using it disrespectfully, but I still think the term is an example of casual ageism.

Anyhoo, I’m mostly just annoyed that the nightdress I want doesn’t exist.

Also, who the hell pays over £100 for a nightie? I’d want it to be made in Hogsmead out of unicorn tears, not made in Derbyshire out of cotton.

ohsuzannah · 15/07/2023 11:41

I'm 70 and I love the EWM one 😊

EmmaPaella · 15/07/2023 11:46

While such nighties may be becoming fashionable again for young people, invalidating the term, my 40s-born DM would never and has never worn one, and for decades they were only really associated with the ‘older’ pre-war generation.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/07/2023 11:51

So many good ones on here!

My elderly mother actually asked me to get her " an old lady " nightie.

We both knew what she meant. 😁 I didn't tell her off.

Ihateparkingapps · 15/07/2023 11:54

My 93 year old mother has just been in hospital, she found short sleeved cotton pyjamas much more useful . The top could be unbuttoned or lifted more easily or the trouser waistband pulled down making examinations quicker and more discreet than having to hoik up a nightie, less exposing. Just a thought!

Jins · 15/07/2023 11:59

I agree with pp who said that buttons up the front are better in that situation. I spent hours two years ago converting all my 86yo mother’s button yoke nighties into fully buttoned ones. The nurses and carers were grateful.

My mother hated jersey nighties and I found the ones I’d bought for her in the recycling bin.

Either stores like Boyes I.E. traditional stores, country style clothing stores that sell tweed, or online places like Sandra's.

Don't buy from the trendier places being recommended. What they sell is overpriced and poorer quality.

DIsForDelightful · 15/07/2023 12:00

Our local indoor market has stuff like that.

askmeonemoretime · 15/07/2023 12:01

Example from Sandra's. Cheaper than damart and other recommendations and lots of choices.

Sandra's online.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/07/2023 13:47

Sigh. What is the world coming to? There was nothing nasty, derogatory or anti-old people in the OPs post. People like you are why we have to call Christmas "winter holidays" just incase someone takes offence. There are occasions when you need to stand up about things being said that are out of order. This wasn't one of them

I call my over 60 travel pass my old lady pass. Had better stop that instanter before someone gets offended on my behalf.

Floisme · 15/07/2023 14:13

I'd be careful about any kind of fastenings. My mum struggled with them once she was past 90, and she didn't like having to rely on other people to get her clothes on / off. Something she could pull over her head worked much better.
