Where to buy "old lady" nightie

DionneInCanada · 14/07/2023 19:25

I think that's the best way to sum up what I'm after for my 90 year old mum. Her request "to have a decent nightie for when I inevitably have to go into hospital" 😮

I looked at M&S and John Lewis online but nothing right.

So requirements are
below knee length but not too long
Short sleeves (not straps)
Preferably not plain white.
Not too big/gaping around the neck and chest
No itchy lace trim

Any ideas where to look please 😊

Try popping into your local hospital - most have little shops in and sell them fairly cheaply and the money goes back into the shop / charity.

Snugglemonkey · 14/07/2023 22:15

I muss my old lady night dresses, but they are not good for breastfeeding. Looking forward to getting back into them!

thorneyislanddoris · 14/07/2023 22:17

Have a look at Damart. That's where I get stuff for MIL

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/07/2023 22:25

DMil had various nightdresses and dressing gowns from David Nieper that she kept aside for potential hospital admissions. They are excellent quality. I hankered after similar last year when I was going to be in hospital. I found them o. John Lewis and they are very comfortable and excellent quality.I'm sorry there is nothing available currently but don't forget that the shops are stocking with a/w stuff right now so if you wait a few weeks you might find a much wider selection. One thought.. footwear is essential in hospital to avoid treading on anything nasty ... keep your eyes peeled for slippers or sandals that can be worn with TED stockings.

Online Camille
Or Bury market if you're in the Northwest

I'm with @BIWI The 'old lady' bit was unnecessary.

What annoys me the most is that 'sensible cotton nighties' always seem to come in white, pale pink or pale blue. I have been looking for a black one for years.

Please stop with the ageism.

You described the kind of thing you're looking for. There was no need to add the additional 'explanation'.

😂

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Dylon would fix your problem in about an hour.

This one is from M&SNavy, short sleeved

I have this and it's lovely. There's also a matching dressing gown which I went back and treated myself to

I don't wear nighties but spend a lot of my life in straight, simple jersey dresses. Very like this nightie, in fact! They've got quite a few that I'd use as day wear, and they're half the price of those they sell as dresses - I'm on it! Thanks.

Lismore · 14/07/2023 23:41

David Nieper is lovely quality- very soft jersey cotton- and made In Derbyshire

Agree LandsEnd!

All cotton, plain or patterned, nice quality, short sleeves, slight scoop neck (not tight but not revealing). I'd go with the mid calf length as they shrink in length slightly with washing. (Im 5'3 and after washing they come a bit below the knee. I'm in my 50s and have worn these for years!

littlekipling · 14/07/2023 23:46

Is it something like this she's looking for?

Undercover Ladies Heather Leopard Cotton Rich Jersey Soft Short Sleeve Nightie Nightdress amzn.eu/d/0fuOeHK

Viviennemary · 14/07/2023 23:55

I second Damart. Lots of old lady type clothes and nightwear.

ManyATrueWord · 14/07/2023 23:56

Damart is what you need.

Moredramathanrazzamatazz · 15/07/2023 00:22

I would suggest that ones which button fully down the front will help a lot with dressing or being dressed while in hospital. If not, then anything that will go over the head very easily such as an elasticated neckline or button placket with several buttons.

Hospitals are usually VERY hot, so avoid any fabrics that aren't lightweight and breathable. Long sleeves will probably be too hot. A polycotton with high cotton content will probably be cool enough and will be less prone to wrinkling unless it is a knit which again might be hot. Many people will prefer 100% cotton. Viscose mix is also good. Avoid anything that is fully polyester or nylon. The M&S modal can be cooling on the skin.

Avoid anything too shiny as that can result in slipping down in the bed or off it for people who are having to spent a lot of time in a hospital bed and maybe can't reposition themselves.

All the best to you and your Mum, she and you sound very sensible.

Moredramathanrazzamatazz · 15/07/2023 00:23

Yes, Damart certainly used to be good for this sort of thing. J D Williams used to be too but seem to be aiming for a 'younger' and 'trendier' audience in terms of their advertising, now. However, try the website or the back of their big catalogue, they may have what you need. I think they are owned by the same company.

Long Tall Sally do a black nightie with very subtle star detailing - be warned though first couple of washes the glitter likes to shed!

EmmaPaella · 15/07/2023 00:38

My Grandma used to get her ‘old lady’ nighties and underwear an independent underwear shop.

Sigh. What is the world coming to? There was nothing nasty, derogatory or anti-old people in the OPs post. People like you are why we have to call Christmas "winter holidays" just incase someone takes offence. There are occasions when you need to stand up about things being said that are out of order. This wasn't one of them.

mellicauli · 15/07/2023 01:05

I think that old ladies do have very specific nightie requirements in that they tend to get colder than younger women due to poor circulation which goes with age. So you wouldn't want anything short or with a low neckline. So I don't the ageist accusation is fair.

And hospitals may be very hot..but that won't be felt by your average 90 year old.

This is what she'll want

Floisme · 15/07/2023 06:33

I've often agreed with you in the past BIWI but not this time. I will object when posters use phrases like 'old lady' as an insult. I don't think the op was doing that.

Sorry I can't help op. I remember my mum wore her old M&S nighties until she died. They were were very threadbare but we just couldn't find any others that did the trick - Hope you find some.
