What is the dress equivalent of jeans? Looking for some understated everyday ones that I can just put on and forget about like with jeans. Needs to have some sort of sleeves and a defined waist, no low necklines, hemlines just below the knee (midi?) that mean I don't have to keep either tugging them down or hoiking them up. Nothing skintight or voluminous. No loud prints or sweaty manmade fibres. Something I can just put on and rush across town to do the school/nursery run in while feeling nice but practical.

Seasalt are very nearly right (really well made, good lengths, usually have decent necklines, some kind of defined waist and and some kind of sleeve) but I find them typically a bit droopy in the cut (maybe better on a taller, straighter figure than mine) and the prints are sometimes a bit twee for my taste. Fat Face have better prints but are often a bit too mini, too maxi, too fussy (the dreaded puffed sleeves etc), or too polyester! Is there a slightly less droopy but equally practical and well-made equivalent to Seasalt? I had a lovely, really pretty but understated knee length tea dress from Monsoon a few years ago (cotton, subtle non-twee sprig floral print, short sleeves, button-up shirt front, defined waist) but it's wearing out and I could really do with a replacement.

I wear jersey/viscose dresses all the time. Knee-length wrap dresses or A-line dresses, they don't ride up, they don't bare cleavage, they just stay on as you put them on. Mine are from all over the place, Monsoon, Phase Eight, H&M, Wallis.

I tend to get a boden jersey midi dress most years in the sale. They normally have several different cuts, but they're generally waisted but not tight, knee length, have v neck or crew neck, can get with sleeves, and patterned or plain. Flattering too, and can size down a little

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just looking through them now. Some won't suit me unfortunately (e.g. I look like a sack of spuds in a T-shirt dress!) and some are too full in the skirt/too much fabric to make them true everyday dresses for me. Just looking at the Boden dresses - what's really annoying is that the ones I like the look of most in terms of shape and understated cut are mostly mini length.

Just saw someone link to this dress on another thread, and the shape is very like my old Monsoon one that I've loved, but I'm not a huge fan of the print - feels a bit twee (again!). Seasalt dress

I know you want sleeves, and not very fancy of fashionable, but I spent last summer living in these. As comfy as they look, really easy wash and quick dry, literally pull on and pockets!!

I had 3 that I swapped around during the week.

How about something like the Rua jersey shirt dress from White Stuff? The Regular length is rather long, but it also comes in Petite:

JaneFondue · 26/04/2023 09:45

Talahassee dresses are quite short for me- I am 5'7'- and mine also shrunk in the wash making them even shorter. Nice cotton though.

OP, Seasalt often repeat the same style in different colours or prints so if you keep an eye out you may find they offer that dress in a version you like.

Worth having a look at Lazy Jack's, made in the UK. I wear their dresses a lot and they are really comfortable. Always some real bargains in the sales too. https://lazyjacks.co.uk/

@GettingStuffed thanks for nudging me to look at Weird Fish! Love a lot of the tops on the website. What's the sizing like?

stayathomer · 26/04/2023 12:43

(whispers) thank you op for this thread! I used to have a knee length jumper dress I lived in in the winter with leggings or black tights even though I'm usually not that type of person. Hope you find what you need!

This is a put on and go dress. https://www.weirdfish.co.uk/p/women/dresses/i/tallahassee-organic-jersey-dress-deep-sea-blue-19762

It's available in about 6 or so colours. I have the culotte jumpsuit in this design and it's a lot more vibrant in real life.

I love the blue mirage one.
I'm waiting for the longer sleeved weird fish dresses of autumn.

I'm a larger size and have some very flattering dresses and tops from them. They wash really well, so the fit stays good.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 26/04/2023 13:17

Mountain Warehouse do very similar to Seasalt, but possibly the patterns are too similar.

Redebs · 26/04/2023 13:26

I've just gone and bought a couple of delray dresses on weird fish 😮
They're on sale, plus 20% off. And I got free postage. Couldn't resist.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 26/04/2023 13:34

I have a couple of the weird fish jumpsuits and they're comfy really & flattering. Not the easiest for going to the loo though as it fastens at the back but I manage.

AlltheFs · 26/04/2023 13:42

That red dress is so flattering on, it’s not as voluminous as the photo suggests. Lovely material. I’m wearing to the office as well as at home.

Hate threads like this, ‘cause they always end up costing money!

Too right 😔

turnthebiglightoff · 26/04/2023 15:35

I size down in Seasalt dresses, by 1 size if fitted and 2 if flowy - and find them perfect!

Papernotplastic · 26/04/2023 15:40

I like Albaray.

Sagittariusrising · 26/04/2023 15:40

@ostentatiousocelot your dress sounds similar to the dolly dress that Monsoon do in various fabrics each year. This Dress is that shape and might be similar to the one you have. They are good for linen and cotton generally so worth a look.
