What is the dress equivalent of jeans? Looking for some understated everyday ones that I can just put on and forget about like with jeans. Needs to have some sort of sleeves and a defined waist, no low necklines, hemlines just below the knee (midi?) that mean I don't have to keep either tugging them down or hoiking them up. Nothing skintight or voluminous. No loud prints or sweaty manmade fibres. Something I can just put on and rush across town to do the school/nursery run in while feeling nice but practical.

Seasalt are very nearly right (really well made, good lengths, usually have decent necklines, some kind of defined waist and and some kind of sleeve) but I find them typically a bit droopy in the cut (maybe better on a taller, straighter figure than mine) and the prints are sometimes a bit twee for my taste. Fat Face have better prints but are often a bit too mini, too maxi, too fussy (the dreaded puffed sleeves etc), or too polyester! Is there a slightly less droopy but equally practical and well-made equivalent to Seasalt? I had a lovely, really pretty but understated knee length tea dress from Monsoon a few years ago (cotton, subtle non-twee sprig floral print, short sleeves, button-up shirt front, defined waist) but it's wearing out and I could really do with a replacement.

Great post , some great ideas, I bought a denim dress a while a go, simple, full length button up with a tie belt , think it was Asda, also Matalan have a few nice ones at mo bought black and white print, not too fussy although one I bought just above knee

Ooh @WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing I like the look of that Wyse London one!! Although I wish there was more choice of colours, at that price. Also liking the look of some of the Hush stuff, whoever suggested that, and a couple of People Tree things too though there's nothing in exactly the right shape for me in their current collections. The suggestion of Boden minis in tall might be worth a shot too, though it really frustrates me that they don't bother listing their actual measurements online. It's one of the best features of the Seasalt site imo.

T shirt dress

I have this one from Scarlett & Jo, they have it in several different colours. I get so many compliments about all of my dresses from here, the fit of them is just so flattering. I love that they list lengths too as im quite short so have the opposite problem of dresses often being too long.

These might be a bit busy/twee for you but i quite like a few of their dresses too & thought i'd throw them in for anyone else reading as can't see them mentioned.

Also another fan of white stuff but more the blouses than the dresses, I really like teal and they often have them in that colour.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 29/04/2023 13:25

@ostentatiousocelot I bought the Wyse one! Great quality and while not the cheapest I know I will wear it on repeat so cost/wear I am justifying it! Tempted by the black one too…..😃

MrsRinaDecker · 29/04/2023 13:33

The new look midi dresses are lovely, but at 5’3” they’re maxis on me and just wouldn’t sit right.. I wish they did more petite ones!

ostentatiousocelot · 29/04/2023 17:19

(Not Hush - Toast I meant, whoever it was who suggested them.)

@WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing have you bought from Wyse before? I could possibly justify it if it's going to last for years. Less so if it bobbles after 6 months... How did you find the sizing? Fairly true to size?

@ostentatiousocelot yes I have a fair bit from Wyse, trying to build up a longer lasting wardrobe instead of my crappy impulse buys 🤣 and the quality is really good. Sizing pretty true to size I find - I float between 12/14 so sizes 3/4 in Wyse x

LilylilyDaisy · 29/04/2023 19:35

Have you looked at Finery? They have a lot of day dresses with sleeves etc.

I love Sahara London dresses comfortable and washes wewll

These are lovely! But their smallest size is a (roomy-looking) 10..? I'm a petite size 8 😖

Sorry Pass on sizing on that end of the scaleon I am a 16 so really don't know. Their cut seems to work well both on long thin women and those with curves. They are good with returns.

They have shops in
York, Edinburgh, Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Burford, Oxford, Cirencester,Marlow, Crawford Street London, Guildford, Bristol, Ludlow, Chichester and Royal Tunbridge Wells. if you are near one of those to have a try on sizing.

I wore this today with black tights. Looks better on. Has a nice waist and pockets.

Where is this one from? It looks great.

Hi it's from Matalan. I bought it from Vinted though.

Dammit, I've just sifted through this thread, and it's fab but dangerous! Found some lovely bits on eBay (Braeburn ones - a brand that I've not heard of). I always look like a right mess, and have gained weight (so my lovely smaller size clothes don't fit) so hopefully these will make me look a bit more put together! I'm not the OP, but thank you everyone who made lovely suggestions

Boden do list the garment size for the majority of items. Under size guide they list body measurements and then scroll down to garment measurements.

Oldraver · 13/05/2023 11:55

I've just bought a few from Mountain Warehouse, I would usually wear braless or crop bra, but tried on yesterday with a fully sprung bra and it totally altered the look
