What is the dress equivalent of jeans? Looking for some understated everyday ones that I can just put on and forget about like with jeans. Needs to have some sort of sleeves and a defined waist, no low necklines, hemlines just below the knee (midi?) that mean I don't have to keep either tugging them down or hoiking them up. Nothing skintight or voluminous. No loud prints or sweaty manmade fibres. Something I can just put on and rush across town to do the school/nursery run in while feeling nice but practical.

Seasalt are very nearly right (really well made, good lengths, usually have decent necklines, some kind of defined waist and and some kind of sleeve) but I find them typically a bit droopy in the cut (maybe better on a taller, straighter figure than mine) and the prints are sometimes a bit twee for my taste. Fat Face have better prints but are often a bit too mini, too maxi, too fussy (the dreaded puffed sleeves etc), or too polyester! Is there a slightly less droopy but equally practical and well-made equivalent to Seasalt? I had a lovely, really pretty but understated knee length tea dress from Monsoon a few years ago (cotton, subtle non-twee sprig floral print, short sleeves, button-up shirt front, defined waist) but it's wearing out and I could really do with a replacement.

I like the River Island one. Not in my size though. Oh well, I’ve saved some money.

Ludicrousness · 27/04/2023 16:51

Like some suggestions above, I'd go black t-shirt dress. I bought one in the RL sale years ago and lived in it. It was really good quality and lasted ages. I even wore it through 2 pregnancies. It was just throw on and looked fab.

Rachpen · 27/04/2023 17:11

I would say look at collectif and Joe browns.

TheGirlWhoLived · 27/04/2023 17:12

Sorry @Shekissedagirlandshelikedit i missed you had already linked the next cotton dresses. Ecru stripe is very nice and not see through!

Ponderingtosk · 27/04/2023 17:17

Have a look at Whitestuff dresses, although their new frilled hem lines give me the ick, love their just below the knee dresses, different neck lines and sleeve lengths, I must have thirty now from over the past six years, love their sparkly soft tights too. The easiest dresses to wear, soft, stretchy, pockets (I must have pockets!). On the other hand their tops are a waste of money, always get holes near the jeans button within a week or so and I’ve stopped buying them.

I've got a wardrobe mainly full of Joe Browns, Seasalt and White Stuff dresses for summer. And the odd ones from M & S or Next. Joe Brown can be very hit and miss in terms of quality though - I've got some that have washed like rags and been thrown out after a dozen or so wears as they've bobbled/faded. Others go on for years. Adini London can be good for floaty summer dresses... and Kit and Kaboodle.

Boden used to do a brilliant midi length dress, jersey cotton and it was one of those you could just hang to dry and it didn't need ironing. I've got about 10 of them... can't see anything at all like it now. Just weird freaky prints in awful colours.

Don't dump it!!

If I were you, I'd get the dress cloned if you really love it. There's often sewing workshops because sewists do this kind of shit all the time so we can have our favourite thing in all the colours!

But if it's really knackered and beyond use, you could unpick the seams and use the pieces to create your paper pattern to have forever. If you've no paper pattern experience you might need a dressmaker to do that for you and also see how much making a new one (or a half-dozen!) would cost. And as a bonus you can do it in exactly the print/colours you love.

Brilliant idea @Turfwars

I wore this today with black tights. Looks better on. Has a nice waist and pockets.

Where's it from please?

Where's it from please?

The label just says denim. I bought it on Vinted.

I have this one and it's very much a 'chuck on and go' dress: https://joanieclothing.com/finette-polka-dot-print-midaxi-tea-dress.html

I really like these. Reminds me of house dresses from the 1940s.

I really like these. Reminds me of house dresses from the 1940s.

It's really comfy and although it's viscose it washes well and hasn't shrunk. Probably not going to last for years and years but I like it!

DJT86 · 27/04/2023 18:25

I would also say white stuff. I wear dresses to work but not the very formal heels and office dresses type style. I am often in a dress and trainers. Don't find they are too short or I am tugging the dress the other way. They also do discounts regularly. Again pockets love a pocket.

MMUmum · 27/04/2023 18:34

And Other Stories have some lovely summer dresses, depending on your budget, and I've also got 2 lovely cotton print dresses from M&S just recently, ideal for pottering about in summer

I love popsy dresses... some are loud- but a variety of prints, and they do free alterations at the time of ordering... I have some slightly less loud ones from their site... also like scarlets and jo

Ooh, these are exactly the shape that suits me. How's the material? I can live with man made fibres if the cut is right, but don't like shiny fabrics

IVbumble · 27/04/2023 18:41

Anyone mentioned Popsy yet? I know they are jersey but they doing something great for whatever shape you might be. Their jumpsuits are amazing even on a tubby tum like mine - although perhaps not this design. For obvious reasons. 😱 demetria-ikat-print-playsuit

I know someone already mentioned Lucy & Yak in a dungarees context but they have some nice dresses in at the mo too. I've ordered and am hopeful for the Mia dress (I went for the citris one but think black looks classy) and the lacey t-shirt dress (with pockets). Will have to see how the sizing is though as these are new and L&Y can be very variable.

I used to have some nice summer & tunic dresses from a few scandi brands too but the indie stores selling them all gradually went out of business. (I liked danefae, aarre, papu).

SybilWrites · 27/04/2023 18:48

In threads of yore on here this was known as the school run dress - something you could just throw on if you were in the garden and go to school. I agree that it's hard to find dresses these days that aren't made of polyester or viscose.

LF Markey have lots of dresses in cotton fabrics. I wear some of the sleeveless ones, but they do have sleeved ones.

Some dresses in Arket and cos if you don't like Toast.
