What is the dress equivalent of jeans? Looking for some understated everyday ones that I can just put on and forget about like with jeans. Needs to have some sort of sleeves and a defined waist, no low necklines, hemlines just below the knee (midi?) that mean I don't have to keep either tugging them down or hoiking them up. Nothing skintight or voluminous. No loud prints or sweaty manmade fibres. Something I can just put on and rush across town to do the school/nursery run in while feeling nice but practical.

Seasalt are very nearly right (really well made, good lengths, usually have decent necklines, some kind of defined waist and and some kind of sleeve) but I find them typically a bit droopy in the cut (maybe better on a taller, straighter figure than mine) and the prints are sometimes a bit twee for my taste. Fat Face have better prints but are often a bit too mini, too maxi, too fussy (the dreaded puffed sleeves etc), or too polyester! Is there a slightly less droopy but equally practical and well-made equivalent to Seasalt? I had a lovely, really pretty but understated knee length tea dress from Monsoon a few years ago (cotton, subtle non-twee sprig floral print, short sleeves, button-up shirt front, defined waist) but it's wearing out and I could really do with a replacement.

Sosander has some lovely dresses and the quality is excellent

I bought a winter Brakeburn dress from a charity shop and have been so impressed with the quality and cut. It has long sleeves which come right down to my hands, a hem which comes below my knees, it has a slight waist, pockets, and a slightly drapey round neck. It's so soft and quite stretchy. I'd never heard of them before but I'm certainly going to buy from them again. I think Tu have started stocking some. A lot of the dresses are all or mostly cotton, some even organic cotton.

A couple of the dress look similar to the one you have.

A friend of mine has just got this Jersey Midi Tiered Dress from M&S. She was rocking it with boots on the school run this morning, but no doubt trainers will work too when the weather improves!

I'm so glad you asked OP. I had a few from M&S and Finery London but they're old now and I've been trying to find replacements.

I've got this and it's nice cotton and you can pull the waist in. I'm 5.5 and went for petite and it's just below the knee.

Do you find you usually need to get petite size Next dresses? I'm 5'4" and am planning to buy a couple of their dresses online, and it'll be good to know if I should go for the regular size or petite :)

Have you tried Popsy? They do have loud prints but also some more subtle ones and they do seem to match your description 😊 absolutely live in them now 😂

I lived in these last summer too, so easy to wear

The regular length dress hit me mid calf which isn't flattering to my legs at all. The petite one comes to just below the knee and looks loads better. Just to note, my local Next is huge but they didn't have the petite in store so I had to order. Hope that helps!

I like some of the People Tree dresses but there's not a lot of description for some of them and no reviews. I'm a bit put off brands that don't have a review section.

@maranella they are beautiful and so comfy. I love their jumpers too.

@Shekissedagirlandshelikedit I usually use the desktop site as it has more info than the mobile one for some reason. They tend to have length, info about the model height and size and what have you, as well as any certifications further down the page. Agree about the lack of reviews if you’re not familiar with them. I’ve found they are very consistent in sizing over the years, and don’t vanity size, so it’s worth looking at the size guide to make sure you have the right size for your measurements.
