I am falling out of love with Vinted

Six months ago I was convinced I would never have to buy new clothes again. Now I'm having more misses than hits. I'm finding it impossible to guess whether something will fit as dress sizes are so variable across brands and items. A few times the seller has gotten the size wrong.

Also, too many sellers are taking terrible photos. Like, from the other side of the room in the dark or at weird angles.

I resell the "misses" and have a strict spending limit per item so I'm not much out of pocket but I just want clothes I can wear!

Any top tips to improve my success rate? Also, what are good solid brands for a nearly 50 year old who wants to look less of a frump?

I find buyers sometimes make really low offers on Vinted and I get fed up of declining them so put on eBay and sell it. I tend to sell more expensive items via eBay but that said I thought I would try a rare Stella nova dress I was selling on Vinted first and sold it within a couple of hours.
I do tend to buy the kids bits on Vinted though.

Been contemplating buying a shirt and looked at it again today only to realise that the seller's seriously mislabelled it. It's listed as an M in the men's (I find women's shirts tend to be too tight in the shoulders and across the back for me), but if you press your nose against the screen, you can see that the label says 'XS'. Upon closer inspection of another photo and running a reverse image search showing the item being sold as a woman's shirt (with measurements!), I think it's also miscategorised by category.

I bought recently a suit where the blazer was the right size but the trousers were a size down. I was only buying it for the blazer, so I forgave.

Been having a few people moan at me for the postage rate. One messaged me saying she was going to buy my £1 item but saw the postage and decided against it. I explained that for evri/yodel, that it is dictated by Vinted (item was listed as small) and they replied she knew that, but still moaned at me!

bucketloadofcats · 07/03/2023 21:12

I bought a gorgeous Monsoon skirt recently, which doesn't fit, but that's because I'm fatter than I thought I was - not because the seller mislabeled it. I hope to one day fit into it...

RicciardoPerez · 07/03/2023 22:27

I also find it frustrating that people don't want to pay much. I have a full length formal dress - full ballgown for £30, yet someone keeps sending me offers for £5!

How? You're not able to offer less than 60% of something on Vinted

RicciardoPerez · 07/03/2023 23:09

@Twinedpeaks she keeps messaging. Says it's all she can afford, how it's for a bridesmaid and that she had gas bills to pay.

Notcontent · 08/03/2023 00:29

I have just ordered two things and teen dd has ordered two things too, so I will report back when I receive them.

I do find you have to spend a long time peering at photos and trying to work out how accurate the descriptions are.

Don’t fall for it. People give hard luck stories to get you to sell cheaply then they sell it for more.

WednesdaysPlaits · 08/03/2023 06:26

I have about a sixty percent success rate. However many things are being sold for a reason, there is a manufacturing problem which means the front doesn’t hang properly or the sizing is off or it’s stretched etc. also out of love with it.

Paq · 08/03/2023 06:38

@Twinedpeaks she sounds like a grifter. Ignore.

I hate vinted, I gave it a good go but I've had too many issues as a buyer and a seller that I don't use it anymore.

Honestly I'm a fan of browsing charity shop aisles, I have found some amazing things for reasonable prices and can try them on. Not as much choice of course and depends where you are a bit. I lived in America for a year though and their thrift shops were amazing!

I think you have to be really picky on there, there's a lot of time wasting sellers and a lot of tat. I won't buy if the photos are rubbish - most phones can take clear photos so it makes me wonder what they're hiding by putting up blurred photos.
I also don't buy if the sizing or description isn't clear, or if they have any bad reviews. Theres loads of sellers with sale not completed reviews, I don't know why Vinted haven't removed their account.

Vinted cancels sales if you don't send in time. I've been selling on there for a year now. Sold loads. Got excellent reviews. But a few times I've been away or sick and not able to post in the permitted time. Vinted automatically cancels. It's very annoying!

Paq · 10/03/2023 07:01

@LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble I think you can put yourself on "holiday mode" if you aren't able to send stuff.

I've sold £50 worth of stuff this week (half of which I bought from vinted in the first place) so I'm actually pretty happy with it at the moment...

@Twinedpeaks
Sorry did not reply. Not been on Mumsnet for a bit . Did not get around to listing last weekend but will try this weekend instead. They are size 16 Hobbs dresses

CakeJumper · 11/03/2023 08:33

@HelebethH do Hobbs dresses come up large or small fitting? Need to re-vamp my work wardrobe and want something a little nicer than the terrible quality tat that’s everywhere these days. Not sure if I’d need a 14 or 16 in Hobbs.

bloodyplanes · 11/03/2023 09:25

I love vinted and buy most of my clothes on there. I only buy from sellers with good pictures and brands i know. I actually find vinted cheaper than my local charity shop! I have had a couple of bits that we're definitely not as nice as the pictures but overall most things are fantastic!

HelebethH · 13/03/2023 14:43

@CakeJumper I always have found them pretty true to size but I tend to like Wrap dresses. However I do have some classic sleeveless type with round necks and fairly straight which I usually size up as I find the bust on them a bit neat. (I am a DD cup) I could wear them a size smaller but would feel quite restricted. Hope this helps.

I saw a swim suit advertised this week as New With Tags. In pictures the seller is not only out and about wearing it (so, not just to show the fit) but they were at a foam party Grin

Some people are really quite stupid 🤷🏻‍♀️

I sell on Vinted and have noticed recently more and more dodgy buyers (not saying any of you ladies are them!!). I take care to take good photos, take photos of label to prove size and wash instructions and will measure garments if asked

BUT I've been stung loads in the last few months with buyers easing false complaints. One claimed the item didn't have tags (it bloody did when I sent it!!), one claimed all baby clothes were stained with sick (photo looks like she's chucked a small cup of milk over the lot), one claimed the item was missing several buttons. All of these people got full refunds and left bad feedback. I countered it but as a seller it really affects how quickly items sell

I've also had money go missing when transferring from my wallet to my bank account and Vinted just claim I need to raise it with my bank

I've stopped using it now but it's a shame as for a while it worked really well!

That is really strange about the money! You should report to the financial conduct authority.

TheUsualChaos · 14/03/2023 07:11

I picked up an evri parcel yesterday as I've bought a few items for DC recently. Wasn't sure which item it would be but when I got home it turned out to be a very cheap item I've never even ordered! I'm baffled as I've gone through all the items I'm.waiting for and the tracking information all says in transit bar one that hasn't been sent yet. Can't understand where this random item has come from but definitely .u name on the package 🤷‍♀️

Whatthediddlyfeck · 14/03/2023 08:25

Meh I’ve just had a fail! A dress advertised as midi which is very definitely maxi. I’m 5’7 so it’s not my height that’s the issue!
I’m very handy with my sewing machine but this isn’t alterable due to the shape of the hem. Back on to Vinted it goes!

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 14/03/2023 12:19

I have had fantastic luck with vinted. A handful of items didn't ship and have been cancelled. I heard it's because the sellers can get swamped with alerts that someone had favourited items and they miss the sold notifications.

But everything I've bought has been great. I'm sprucing up my wardrobe for spring for cheap.

Isthatarealname · 14/03/2023 12:50

Yes my bug bears with Vinted are:

Sizing - would rather they scrap L-12 XL-14 and just have 12, 14, L & XL.
Filter - Wish you could tick brands you don't want to see, I'm quite willing to give most a go but definitely don't want supermarket/Boohoo/PLT.
Postage - not really a vinted issue but there aren't enough inpost lockers in my area, sometimes I have to drive back to them 3 times in a day to see if they've been emptied/get to them before they fill up again.
