I am falling out of love with Vinted

Six months ago I was convinced I would never have to buy new clothes again. Now I'm having more misses than hits. I'm finding it impossible to guess whether something will fit as dress sizes are so variable across brands and items. A few times the seller has gotten the size wrong.

Also, too many sellers are taking terrible photos. Like, from the other side of the room in the dark or at weird angles.

I resell the "misses" and have a strict spending limit per item so I'm not much out of pocket but I just want clothes I can wear!

Any top tips to improve my success rate? Also, what are good solid brands for a nearly 50 year old who wants to look less of a frump?

@FuckingHateRats ...that's stunning...love those colours !

Jesko · 05/03/2023 15:26

Yeah it was allegedly a genuine error by my seller too @BluebellBlueballs 🤨

Paq · 05/03/2023 15:43

Well I've just sold £30 worth since starting this thread so maybe I'll keep trying!

Seasalt seems to sell really well by the way!

I wish more/all sellers would list measurements. I appreciated Vinted's update of the particular slot for length and shoulder measurements, but many aren't using that. I'd even much rather a mediocre picture and some measurements than great pictures at ??? measurements. To me, that's just basic. Measuring takes less time than taking the photos do, so there's no real excuse.

People putting up items with stains! If it washes out, you should wash it out yourself. If it doesn't, it's not wearable and shouldn't be being sold.

With only two days' time between delivery and final acceptance, it's not like you have time to faff about trying to determine which it is. Related bugbear that if the Item is Not As Described, you still have to pay postage for return - ebay makes the seller cover in that circumstance, so the innocent buyer doesn't lose out.

I was thinking of selling a never worn esprit coat. I bought it in the sale for £60 so was thinking I could get may be £30. Nope. Similar items are going for £5. So not worth the hassle of selling then!

Fabled · 05/03/2023 17:46

I’ve had some success buying stuff of Vinted, but selling is a nightmare. People make ridiculous offers e.g. ‘hi would you accept £3?’ -What, for a new with tags Hobbs dress? No, I wouldn’t.

I’ve gone back to eBay for selling most stuff now.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 05/03/2023 17:57

i specifically asked how long a denim skirt was knee length was the reply when it arrived it was 33" which is only knee length on a giraffe it was about 5" off the floor length

I would stick to brands where you know what the sizing is like. Don't buy an item if the photos aren't good quality. Agree with a PP who said it's annoying when there is no photo of the label. I find looking at the label is a good way of telling how worn an item is, as sometimes the labels are really washed out and frayed.

CakeJumper · 05/03/2023 18:33

Me too! Completely fallen out of love with it in the past month. Nothing on there I want for a decent price and I’ve been stung recently by a pair of boots and necklace from the same seller that were just compete and utter tat, listed as “great” condition. My arse. Just not up for the hassle anymore.

I have some never worn Uniqlo heattech and a merino jumper. May not be worth the while to sell? Especially as they are in size 8. Uniqlo tops with the tags on are going for 5 quid. :(

I tried to get into Vinted because a friend raved about it, too many people trying to get their cost price for second hand items I thought

I've had a selling spree lately as my DD had a growth spurt and loves river island/next etc. I just uploaded all her decent stuff and sold it. Made around £35.

I have a pair of jeans I bloody love and have worn to death. Dorothy Perkins don't do that specific type anymore and I'm really funny in my shape. I found two sellers with my jeans BNWOT and got both of them. They've turned up and are brilliant.

I tend to just spend back on Vinted what I make. DD had a good peruse last night and we've just purchased a couple of jumpsuits/summer dresses with remaining balance too. So fingers crossed they all turn up. I never pay more than £6-£8 for anything though.

Paq · 05/03/2023 19:34

And... I've just sold my third item of the day. Feeling guilty for dissing Vinted now it's showing me so much love!

Use Vestiaire. Much better

Frenchfancy · 05/03/2023 19:37

In general I stick to good quality brands I know. If I want something from a brand I don't know (for example someone on MN was raving about Brax trousers) then I buy the cheapest thing I can find from that brand to check the sizing. Now I know my size in Brax I only buy if I can see the size label. I have 6 pairs, no more than 10€ a pair. They cost 110€ new .

The only things I've had misses with is where I have not looked at the photos closely enough.

Please make sure you remove money from your wallet as soon as it hits it and don't let it build up. I've lost money that has gone missing and never appeared in my account. Vinted have been useless. Don't let your balance build up too much

HDready · 05/03/2023 20:28

Oh I always ignore what Vinted tell me similar things are going for. Just list it for what you are hoping for and see what happens.

twigy100 · 05/03/2023 21:24

I've sold 5 items today, I do like the way that the buyers pre pay for postage ect

I find monsoon items really difficult sizing re Large vs 14 I ordered a few jumpers thinking they were a 14 and they hang off me

bravelittletiger · 05/03/2023 21:33

I agree. Everything I've bought has been poor quality or knackered. When you add shipping for each individual item it's not even that cheap.

Riverlee · 05/03/2023 21:37

tillyoumakeit · 05/03/2023 09:29

The weird size grouping on Vinted is my biggest bugbear. To me a 10 doesn't equal M and 12 isn't large! I wish they would separate out numbered and lettered sizes.

I do think there is the potential for a good twitter account of funny Vinted photos though!

I agree, the letters and numbers don’t correspond.

Crumbcatcher · 05/03/2023 22:02

I have only bought so far, I love that postage is so cheap. I'm watching a dress on ebay but postage is £4.95, so high it's put me off!

I got £35.00 for a branded coat.
