I am falling out of love with Vinted

Six months ago I was convinced I would never have to buy new clothes again. Now I'm having more misses than hits. I'm finding it impossible to guess whether something will fit as dress sizes are so variable across brands and items. A few times the seller has gotten the size wrong.

Also, too many sellers are taking terrible photos. Like, from the other side of the room in the dark or at weird angles.

I resell the "misses" and have a strict spending limit per item so I'm not much out of pocket but I just want clothes I can wear!

Any top tips to improve my success rate? Also, what are good solid brands for a nearly 50 year old who wants to look less of a frump?

No advice but am in a similar boat!

Dotcheck · 05/03/2023 08:12

I’ve started to zero in on brands I know are good quality and know their sizing.
I don’t buy unless there are good quality pictures
I’ve also started giving honest feedback instead of being nice.

faffadoodledo · 05/03/2023 08:16

I love Vinted, but terrible seller's photos drive me mad! And why don't they show pics of the washing instructions label? I almost always end up having to message to ask. I myself take excellent Vinted pics and find it makes for trouble free selling too
I also worry that a lot of the new with tags stuff is nicked! Especially handbags. That said though I got DD an amazing Stella McCarntney handbag for xmas and she's not complaining! And perhaps I have an overly cynical view of human nature

Twinedpeaks · 05/03/2023 08:21

I only buy brand where I know what size I am, and only good photos and with a picture of the label. I too noticed that lots of sellers were mixing us us/U.K. sizing otherwise

So far I've had a brand new whistles dress for £20, a brand new arket dress for £20, some brand new Clark's books for £30, and a new boden playsuit for £15.

That's a saving of almost £400 across 4 items!

Rainraingoaway21 · 05/03/2023 08:25

I have also had some trouble with the sizing of items. I've noticed when listing to sell an item that the only options are for example XL/14. A jumper I brought recently had an XL label on it (hence why the seller selected XL/14) but it was more like a size 16 or 18 tbh! I wish the seller had been more specific in their description but it is annoying Vinted only give you that option. A M is automatically a 10 and a 12 is a L. It's not always the case!

Sunnysunbun · 05/03/2023 08:28

I feel the same. People take terrible pictures and it’s all really expensive.

Twinedpeaks · 05/03/2023 08:36

Youve just inspired to browse and I'm now looking at a jacket squashed into a clear back (to show 'still in packet') which is collection only... On Vinted... How does that work?!

😀 I don't think the seller has quite got the hang of vinted!

I sell on Vinted and their sizing choices are a pain. I always put UK14-16 or whatever in the description, or put that something is oversized fit or similar to give an idea.

Paq · 05/03/2023 08:43

Yes to all of these stories, especially sizing. USA/UK mix ups, a 12 being either a large or a small depending on brand. Here's two size 12s, Monsoon and River Island:

@faffadoodledo interesting comment about washing instructions and labels. I have never used vinted but intend to advertise 4 Hobbs dresses and a Radley handbag this weekend as my first attempt to sell. I will take on board yours and other posters comments.

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 05/03/2023 08:56

Some of it is do blatantly nicked.
I guess your issue with sizes is the same when buying anything online.

Blossomandbee · 05/03/2023 09:06

I think you have to be really picky on there, there's a lot of time wasting sellers and a lot of tat. I won't buy if the photos are rubbish - most phones can take clear photos so it makes me wonder what they're hiding by putting up blurred photos.
I also don't buy if the sizing or description isn't clear, or if they have any bad reviews. Theres loads of sellers with sale not completed reviews, I don't know why Vinted haven't removed their account.

JewelLane · 05/03/2023 09:13

Like others, I only buy brands I know and know fit.

I always buy quality.
I also google brands that I've not heard of. Sometimes this picks up quality brands and extends what I might wear.

I don't ever spend more than I'm ok with losing.
I ask for measurements if I'm not sure. Most sellers are fine with this, those that don't respond, the prospective sale ends there due to lack of communication.

Given the huge savings and the range of options available I suck up the odd mistake and sell on or donate to charity.
I've saved, for instance £110 on a Hobbs jacket. Once worn by the owner, gives me a bit of leeway for a couple of mistakes.

On the positive some of my more risky buys - new styles to ‘try’ have been my best and most complimented buys.

What size? Hobbs dresses are my go to search at the moment 😂

boobeans · 05/03/2023 09:27

I find knowing my best fitting brands means I can get some real bargains. My favourite jeans are a £29.99 Zara skinny style in a size 10. My last 2 pairs were 'new without tags' for less than £10 on Vinted.

My misses have always been brands I don't usually buy, or when I've gone a bit off-piste with the style. I always resell the misses though, I take really nice photos to make sure it's attractive to buyers!

Can you pop into your local shopping centre and really narrow down your favourite styles and sizes? Take pics of them and search away on Vinted

As previous poster said, set a max budget. An amount you wouldn't be upset to lose should the item be crap. Good luck!

tillyoumakeit · 05/03/2023 09:29

The weird size grouping on Vinted is my biggest bugbear. To me a 10 doesn't equal M and 12 isn't large! I wish they would separate out numbered and lettered sizes.

I do think there is the potential for a good twitter account of funny Vinted photos though!

I think it's often useful when selling an item that is smaller/larger for its size to emphasise this in bold high up in your listing as you say with labels and possibly measurements.

Takes a few minutes longer but then you're covering yourself if your buyer has an issue with size later - not aiming that at you OP, I've had a few instances previously when they have complained but openly told me they didn't read the listing and only looked at the first of 5 pictures Confused

Whatthediddlyfeck · 05/03/2023 09:42

I’ve been using Vinted for about a year and have bought a LOT, but I’m very picky about what I buy. Laziness by sellers is SO annoying. I’ve only had my fingers burnt a couple of times , with a top which was listed as size 14/16, nope it was AGE 14/16. I relisted it to sell so my only loss has been p&p, which I look on as being what I’d pay for parking if I went into town. The other burn was an item described as BNWOT which came with a make up stain on it .
I’m very honest in my feedback though!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/03/2023 09:47

I saw a swim suit advertised this week as New With Tags. In pictures the seller is not only out and about wearing it (so, not just to show the fit) but they were at a foam party Grin

Never looked at vinted before. What a load of old tat. Is vinted the new jumble sale?

faffadoodledo · 05/03/2023 09:56

@user1498572889 not at all! See some
Of the style threads where posters are wearing Vinted. You do need to sift well though, and sometimes use some imagination. I must admit I'm used to using the styling of my favourite brands, and am only now getting used to going off piste.

Vinted is great. I love Lucy and Yak and get dungarees on there for £15-£20 which are still on the main website for £60+. Also buy all of my son's scandi clothes on there. There are hundreds of thousands of listings on there, you did well to get through them all.

OP I just re-sell if something doesn't fit!

Almahart · 05/03/2023 10:15

I've had a really good run recently, whistles sweatshirt for £8 that I love, Hush harems for £9, but I only buy brands that I know and never spend more than a tenner on anything
