I am falling out of love with Vinted

Six months ago I was convinced I would never have to buy new clothes again. Now I'm having more misses than hits. I'm finding it impossible to guess whether something will fit as dress sizes are so variable across brands and items. A few times the seller has gotten the size wrong.

Also, too many sellers are taking terrible photos. Like, from the other side of the room in the dark or at weird angles.

I resell the "misses" and have a strict spending limit per item so I'm not much out of pocket but I just want clothes I can wear!

Any top tips to improve my success rate? Also, what are good solid brands for a nearly 50 year old who wants to look less of a frump?

I’m always a bit surprised at how many people don’t iron items before taking a photo. I was looking last night for a specific top because I have one I wanted to sell and wanted to get an idea of what they were going for. There was one, but it was screwed up and lying on a bed so you could hardly tell what it looked like

I needed/wanted a quite specific sequinned outfit for when i go to Eurovision. My plan was to look as though Christmas has been sick on me. I paid £5 for a dress and £7 for a jacket...interested to see how it works out!

Not stung as such, but someone left me 3 star feedback for a £1 top which was used, described EXACTLY. Said it smelled of cigarette smoke despite me (nor anyone in my house) smoking. However, they marked it as 'everything is ok'. If they had an issue, why not just say! really annoyed me haha! Got over 250 feedback and they were all 5 stars before them!

I started selling about six weeks ago and am really pleased with how it's going. Biggest successes are toiletries/perfume and fascinators.

Slightly off topic, but I was in a charity shop ghd other in a wealthy area of Cheshire. There was a woman in there with two huge bags stuffed full of all sorts. According to the assistant she was a dealer. She buys stuff snd then flips it on Vinted, eBay etc.
What do we think? Ethicsl
or not. I felt like telling her to leave something for someone else!

There's more than enough second hand clothing to go around. At least that way it gets used rather than ending up in landfill or shipped off to developing countries.

FANTINE2 · 17/03/2023 20:41

Yes I know there is but it would nice to be able to actually sed it before it disappears !

FANTINE2 · 17/03/2023 20:41

See it

FANTINE2 · 17/03/2023 20:42

The dealers are not buying Primark and New Look

@Isthatarealname you can check online whether Inpost lockers have space, at least you can with all the ones near me. The website even tells you when each locker size is nearly full. Useful to save a wasted trip!

Potplant19 · 17/03/2023 21:07

I find it good for children's clothes but don't understand why they don't have age 3 - their sizes go 24-36 months, then 4 years old 🤷

Also sold a pramsuit recently, postage via InPost lockers. Very irritatingly it got returned to me as there was no space in the lockers it was meant to be delivered to. The seller requested a refund as by the time it arrived back to me their baby had grown out of it.

Pringleface · 17/03/2023 21:15

I had someone message me to ask me to post a photo of me wearing the top I was selling. Er…no!

1frenchfoodie · 17/03/2023 22:46

I’ve had loads of hits (if I meet up with my sister at least half our collective outfits are from vinted). Only misses were a lipstick with inadequate postage (irritating when the cost included a higher postage charge) and a next jardigan. The jardigan seller is possibly now shooting for Vogue, so good were the photos of the rough, misshapen fumpy item that turned up.

I had this too with a pair of new high heels lol! Wanted to see every angle of the shoe with my foot in, then asked if I had any open toe sandals 🤣 quick block!

Good on her, it’s nice to see someone being entrepreneurial. I have no issues with it at all.

Paq · 18/03/2023 08:42

Agree @Porridgeislife. Charity shops are there to raise money for the charity, so this woman is probably boosting their profits.

I'm going to be strict for a few months and go into seller mode only. It helps that I have an operation at the end of March followed by 8 weeks recovery.

Having worked in charity retail management I can tell you now that so long as the stock is sold at asking price the charity won't give ashit who bought it.

In fact the shop manager will be pleased there is a regular business buyer to take volume stock off her and help her achieve sales targets.

Charity shops are run as businesses with the profits going to the charities endeavours.

I tend to stick to brands I know well
so I can buy the right sizes.

I only ever buy stuff that is new without tags or new with tags and with good photos.

I tend to buy fairly classically cut clothes. Jackets. Sweatshirts. Tees. Maxi dresses etc. Nothing with weird cuts or random frills etc.

I email the seller and ask for the a photo of the label (so I know the fabric and the washing instructions) before I buy.

Only buy good quality brands that use decent fabric. Lot of of John Lewis. Boden. Hobbs. LK Bennett etc. Never ASOS, SHEIN, Primark etc.

I strayed from this rule recently and regretted it. Some bad buys that need reVinting.
