Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

vosene, Matey, linco beer barrel shampoo (i think it was called that) my mum wearing Cinnabar perfume and rimmel Opal nail varnish (70's) bubblegum flavour goopy rollerball lipgloss - you licked it off instantly so went through a few of these, little sachets of toners for your hair the did absolutely nothing for my dark hair, lemon scented roll on, Yardley guest soaps, millions of gifts of talc that i never used, soap on a rope - footy shaped for the boys, green apple scented for us, peachy cream stuff with a peach on top from Avon. Goth years - insette or Boots massive extra hold cans ofhair spray, miners make up black and white sets, john lewis frosted pink lipsticks. mid 90's going out styled like Kylie - Boots own brand lipstick nude - the one with the grey tube and red ring around it - gutted when they stopped that! M and S eyeshadow kits and lip kits the mini ones - usually great colours. I thought I was gorgeous with my dangly earrings and black sheer shirt with bra under it!

I used to pore over those Rimmel adverts in my mam's 'Woman' magazine. I wish Rimmel still sold that pink tinted nail varnish

Used to love these adverts and studied them for hours

Rimmel Moonlight nail varnish was a favourite

Just remembered 'Country Born' hair products like gel...1980/81 ish. Not sure if Boots or Woolies? I used to buy tubs of green hued gel...whang it on my hair and dry it upside down..<misty nostalgia>

I was allowed the pink tinted nail varnish when I was a bridesmaid aged 14. I felt very grown up

Does anyone remember Aqua Manda Orange scented bath oil?

God...yes! The last word in sophistication. And Aqua Citrus, the lemon version? I was at a NT property on Sunday, saw Innoxa, older packaging than I knew, but I had something Innoxa...I had completely forgotten till I saw it.

Je reviens ok but not Youth Dew

Seconded.....my sister wore Youth Dew, and she could have cleared the drains with it........,

woodhill · 18/01/2023 19:41

My grandmother bought me it but I think she took it back

Dm didn't like it either

Nothing youthful about it

Crikeyalmighty · 18/01/2023 19:46

My favourite was samsara- my abiding memory of it was buying a bottle the week I left my first husband in1990 . I still like the smell of it now

Gatekeeper · 18/01/2023 20:56

I'm laughing to myself now thinking about Youth Dew perfume. In my 2nd job 1981 I was in an office of older people and one of them used to wear this and alos a perfume called "Eau Dore Puig" which smelled like wood preservative...she used to pronounce it "Oh Dorry pewg" Grin

God love her...I'm probably older than she was at the time now but she seemed prehistoric to me with her crimpelene frocks, cauliflower shampoo and set etc

Gatekeeper · 18/01/2023 21:00

I remember my older sister buying some yellow nail varnish by Miners back in the early 70's and her painting my nails so they looked like I'd been smoking Capstan full strength!

Gatekeeper · 18/01/2023 21:02

Glamour and beauty and makeup was far more achievable and fun

AnnieFarmer · 18/01/2023 21:15

I have very fond childhood memories of my mums Avon catalogue. I used to love looking through it. Avon did a range called (I think) Little Blossom and I will always remember receiving some from my mum.

Every girl in my class wore either Heather Shimmer or Iced Champink lipstick by Rimmel in c1983. And wore Impulse body spray, Exclamation, Lou Lou or Le Jardin perfume.

ChaToilLeam · 18/01/2023 21:27

I found more old Rimmel ads! I had the powder blusher and spitty mascara. And the frosted water colour eyeshadows! I suspect my parents of binning it all because it all vanished one day. 😡

Did anyone not have a Babyliss Crimper and have to spend ages doing their newly washed hair in tiny tiny plaits tied at the ends with ponytail bands . Then sleep in them. The next morning tease them out (no brushing) with a wide tooth comb.
Instant Kate Bush and my hair less frazzled than if I'd had a crimper .

Penguinsaregreat · 18/01/2023 23:14

That Lou Lou perfume was vile. I had a friend who wore the colours of Benetton perfume and that smelt awful too. However nothing will ever trump the smell of Old Spice in the rancid fragrance list. It had a smell that got right down your throat and made you cough.

Chasedbythechaser · 19/01/2023 09:14

I came here to add panstick but a quick google shows it is still being sold. Who buys this stuff? Why is it still here when HR and Prescriptives are not?

Chasedbythechaser · 19/01/2023 09:15

I wore Exclamation! and Lou Lou and Anais Anais. They were all sickly smelling.

FayCarew · 19/01/2023 09:17

@Chasedbythechaser , Prescriptives was part of the Estee Lauder group.
Might Panstick be used as stage make-up?

I still wear AA occasionally 😂

Ah it probably didn’t suit my skin’s PH. I wear woodier smells now so completely at the other side of the perfume range.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/01/2023 09:44

Someone mentioned Old Spice up thread, that's making quite the revival with the youngsters now 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 19/01/2023 09:54

Youth dew really was horrible, I hated poison too -

Max Factor do Panstick and its actually not that bad. When I was younger I'd always get really flushed when I met my friends, and had alcohol. I'd raid my mums make up for her Panstick. It's also good to use over normal foundation on scars, blemishes etc. It's still around as it's actually a quality product.

Penguinsaregreat · 19/01/2023 13:01

My mum still wears Chloe. It used to be one of the cheaper perfumes and smelt nice. Now it’s quite pricey and doesn’t seem to smell as nice. Anais Anais Wes one of the first proper perfumes I was bought. It seemed so sophisticated back then. I had been used to wearing Tramp and Tweed.
Does anyone remember Arabian Glow by Avon?
I had a friend who did Avon when we were teenagers and I bought it off her as it was all the rage. At one time we wore brown eyeshadow with brown/nude lipstick and put this Arabian Glow bronzer on too. I also had a similar thing from the bodyshop, bronzing beads in a tub. You ran a brush over all the beads and brushed it over your face!
