Tights and sandals. Yes or no?

Let me start off by saying I was firmly I the no camp on this previously, but I'm seeing it a lot again and as with any trend once you start getting used to seeing it, you tend to warm up to the idea. So now I'm considering wearing a shorter Sequin party dress with tights and platform heels.

What are your thoughts? And if you're open to it / a fan of the look would you say black semi-sheer or opaque would be better? Sandals will be black btw.

If you've found this page in search of tights that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best tights useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

No

Nope

KimmySchmitt · 28/11/2022 15:51

Oh I'm with you OP, previously a Definite No but actually with the chunky sandals it looks okay. I do think they need to be platform and chunky so it's an obvious look and not your gran out for her church dance. I think the semi-sheer looks better actually. Not sure I'm going to be brave enough, think I'm going to try to dig out some closed-toe heels this year.

Spanielsarepainless · 28/11/2022 16:00

No.

CraigDavid · 28/11/2022 16:00

Only with a closed toe shoe

Cornelious · 28/11/2022 16:02

I wear tights with sandals. I'm glad the youngsters in the photos think it's cool 🤣

Kastri · 28/11/2022 16:07

No.

youcantry · 28/11/2022 16:09

Yes - I'm planning to! I like the look

cathyandclare · 28/11/2022 16:10

I think it's ok with fishnets and Alexa's look great in that pic

carefulcalculator · 28/11/2022 16:11

I think they can look good, yes from me.

ZenNudist · 28/11/2022 16:12

I'm a definite yes. I've been wearing sparkly tights with short velvet dress and sparkly heels.

I've got some gold platforms I intend to wear with black pattern sheer-ish party tights.

A trend that works for me!

GettingStuffed · 28/11/2022 16:15

If you're wearing the tights for sandals, or without the reinforced toe

BedTaker · 28/11/2022 16:18

I absolutely love it!

But the sandals have to be chunky and platform to really pull it off I think. I don't think it works as well with a very strappy/stiletto type sandal. I also think it works better with a shorter dress, although Alexa does look great, but it wouldn't work with my calves at all!

TomTraubertsBlues · 28/11/2022 16:19

Those pink shoes aren't sandals though??

For me, I'd only wear with a closed toe.

beAsensible1 · 28/11/2022 16:20

closed toe only otherwise, no.

EllaPaella · 28/11/2022 16:23

Yes

BeginningToLookALotLike · 28/11/2022 16:23

What about with slingbacks?

LondonLovie · 28/11/2022 16:30

Yes! Super fashionable.. those who say no probably can't see that it's no longer a faux pas in fashion terms, a bit like wearing navy and black (which in the right materials and tones looks super!) Ooo how about navy sandals and black tights ❤️

Throwawayaccount1 · 28/11/2022 16:32

As long as the little seam isn't showing, AOK.

Side note: it does depend somewhat on the shoe and tights.

BlackSwan · 28/11/2022 17:01

I don't like the look but the only way it can be pulled off is if you have an obviously immaculate pedi underneath the tights.

Lulu1919 · 28/11/2022 17:20

No if you can see toes and or heel
Middle ones I think are ok with tights

PollyIndia · 28/11/2022 18:34

Yes, totally fine. But yes, no toe gusset visible! I think you can get tights without.
I've got some sheer, spotty ones and defo wearing them with my platform sandals this Dec

Beenheresomanytimesbefore · 28/11/2022 19:44

I think it works with ‘statement’ tights rather than tights that are just there to cover your leg IYSWIM

SparklyMistleToes · 28/11/2022 19:57

Thanks for the responses. I definitely won't be doing a reinforced toe! Don't think I even own any tights with reinforced toes. As for the shoes I don't have any closed toed shoes and I think this trend really needs to be done with a chunkier shoe (which is why I did include it in the pics even though I don't own any.) The closed toe ones I included would be far too chunky in me and overpower the dress. I think a short Sequin dress is statement enough, so want something minimal with tout any pattern for the rights. Either semi-sheer in a lower denier, or an opaque higher denier pair. One thing for sure is that I don't want to have bare pasty legs, as the dress is quite short.

I have just found a 'guide' to wearing tights with sandals: dresslikeaparisian.com/tights-in-open-toe-yes-or-no/

I love the look, always have. But here in the UK tights are somehow sneered at, women rather go bare legged in freezing conditions than god forbid wear tights. it’s weird.
