Tights and sandals. Yes or no?

Let me start off by saying I was firmly I the no camp on this previously, but I'm seeing it a lot again and as with any trend once you start getting used to seeing it, you tend to warm up to the idea. So now I'm considering wearing a shorter Sequin party dress with tights and platform heels.

What are your thoughts? And if you're open to it / a fan of the look would you say black semi-sheer or opaque would be better? Sandals will be black btw.

If you've found this page in search of tights that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best tights useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

I was definitely in the 'tights only ever with a closed toe' camp but I'm seeing it more and more with a chunky open toe sandal and I don't hate it.

Still not sure I could bring myself to though...

pellythefamouspenguin · 28/11/2022 23:04

Definitely yes, it can look very cool. I did it in my twenties and would still do now if the occasion arose and I'm heading towards 50!

pellythefamouspenguin · 28/11/2022 23:06

Oh and the sandals are black, sheer or slightly sheer is best. If the sandals are a different colour, id go for thick black tights.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/11/2022 23:11

Hard no.

Maybe an exception for quirky 6th formers but otherwise no.

zurala · 28/11/2022 23:18

Only with opaques.

Mind you, I don't call those sandals, I would call them open toe shoes. To be, sandals are flat and for summer.

Penguinsaregreat · 28/11/2022 23:55

I absolutely love the look of the pink dress. Oh how I wish I was thin again and could pull this look off.

NegroniLover · 29/11/2022 00:20

Yes!! I am planning to wear it this December. I saw it on ME+EM & loved it!
I've just bought a pair of black velvet platform sandals with a knot front - v like Alex's but velvet & not quite as high.

I plan to wear with a black velvet midi dress from ME+EM & semi opaque tights

Also with black bocade cropped tapered trousers from zara

LadyEloise1 · 29/11/2022 00:35

No !!!

RiverSkater · 29/11/2022 00:42

Yes!! Peep toe with a patterned mesh or fishnet looks great.

BreadInCaptivity · 29/11/2022 00:57

Sorry but I think it's a look that you have to have a certain style and frankly age (that I am on the wrong side of) to pull off.

I agree Alexa does so with aplomb but note the attention to detail re: the "right" kind of chunky platform open toe shoe, the "right" opacity of tights (and no reinforcement) and a perfect pedi underneath.

So it's a look I'll be leaving to others and whilst my tights will be getting a good wearing this winter my toes will be covered up because I'm pretty sure on me this look won't translate well.

Yes they've done the tights and platform peep toes a lot on Me+Em. I love how they've styled this short black dress. I know exactly the shoes you've gone for. I love the knotted ones and mine are very similar. 👍🏻

I've included a pic with closed toe platforms but for me it's too heavy. I prefer the peep-toe / sandal style.

And for those of you saying the style is for younger people only, I think this time around the trend is almost the opposite. I've not seen it on many people under 30, but almost everywhere I have seen it and like it is shown on brands / people over 30. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing I don't know lol. But I like it Blush

I would say no, but it is virtually impossible to buy a pair of chunky platform shoes with a closed toe and heel. Esska have brought out the Chaza but it’s been sold out for ages and the further stock not arrived. I think I’m going to wear some block heel suede ankle boots, but really want nice shoes

Yesthatismychildsigh · 29/11/2022 10:37

Reminds me of scruffy (for want of a better word, sorry) women in the 70’s.

mewkins · 29/11/2022 10:51

Yes. All of these photos look good. As with everything it's trial and error.

NegroniLover · 29/11/2022 11:03

@SparklyMistleToes my ME+EM dress is very similar to the long one in your pics and my sandals are more like the ones in the shorter dress photo, except they're black velvet.
I think they look great and I'm really looking forward to wearing them to social events over the next month. Also, I am 52! I am 5ft 9" size 12 and I think this style looks great!

SommerTen · 29/11/2022 11:17

Can I just say I like the pink jumper in the 2nd pic, I wonder where it's from?

It's by Etro. But a couple years ago now I think. Think they run between £700-£1000 🫣

It looks a similar knit to this mohair cardigan www.etro.com/gb-en/mixed-mohair-cardigan-with-etro-cube-logo-222D1377091740700.html

Agreed. This is the best way to do it IMO.

SparklyMistleToes · 29/11/2022 20:02

It seems Victoria Beckham is fully embracing this trend now too, so I'm going to as well this party season GrinGlitterball

The sight of toes through tights doesn't work for me, I'm not convinced...yet

Hers are shoes though aren't they? Not sandals.

KimmySchmitt · 29/11/2022 20:30

@rainbowandglitter nope, it's these ones so slightly open-toed

@SparklyMistleToes I ordered these earlier because of this thread! I'm going to go for it. Really wanted the Esska Valeries but don't think it's worth it for cost per wear.

NegroniLover · 29/11/2022 23:41

These are mine! I don't like the ones Victoria Beckham is wearing though
