Surprisingly great but cheap perfumes

I tested a New Look perfume, which was strategically displayed at the till yesterday and really liked it. I am certainly not their target customer (a couple of decades beyond)😂and I might actually go back to but it.

I find most perfumes way to overpowering and was surprised that this one was rather lovely. Which perfumes have you found in unexpected places?

I know it’s not perfume, but does anyone use the Fabuloso cleaning stuff? I got some washing liquid and dd says it’s an angel dupe. They had a whole range of Lush snow fairy smell a like, which I loathe but Dd loves.

Sadly Yardley Jade is discontinued. 😪

Think it's been renamed Flora Jade?

Thanks @LadyOfTheCanyon 😊

Another vote for Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, but even better is Sunflowers, it's gorgeous and warm and really lasts on me.
Otherwise I love CKOne and Eternity, but my favourite 'under the radar' scent is Pleats Please by Issey Miyake. Usually on offer on perfume direct, all beauty or similar.

louderthan · 17/11/2022 23:01

I've also got a jo malone inspired one from Aldi. The scent is blackberry and bay and is stunning but doesn't last long unfortunately

Does anyone remember Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers?

That was amazing

My favourite 🤩 got some off Amazon fairly recently

Firstinlastout · 18/11/2022 00:01

I love the Britney Spears perfumes,I've been buying them since they came out years ago and have never got bored with them like I do with some perfumes after a while.
The best New Look one I've tried was called Blush .Unfortunately the nearest New Look to me is miles away now ours has closed down, but if I'm ever passing one I'll go in just for that.I love it and the smell lasts for ages.
As for the Fabulosa,I agree.Ive got a couple of the furniture polishes and I actually thought ooh I'd wear that as a perfume!😂

MissBattleaxe · 18/11/2022 03:22

@madamsapple flora jade is along similar lines but isn't the same. Not a bad substitute for it though but doesn't quite have the Chanel Cristalle thing going on.

My mate is an an anaesthetist - she said patients regularly comment on how amazing she smells when she puts them under.

She wears Body Shop mango body butter Grin

Going to try this!

LowbrowVictoriana · 18/11/2022 13:44

Great thread.

I will be trying Gres Cabotine off the back of this... I've long been a fan of Gres Cabochard, which would be my own recommendation. I've had compliments about it, and it's lovely and cheap.

DD got some Britney perfume from MIL a few years ago. She loved it!

Going to try this!

I used to adore the Brazil Nut body butter in days gone by. I haven't set foot in a bodyshop for years but might have to try the mango butter.

Ooh I love fabulosa- the lemon sherbet kitchen cleaner smells gorgeous!

Deathraystare · 19/11/2022 18:08

@devildeepbluesea

Amazingly I love it too even though it is very sweet and I hate sweet scents! I love the shower cream and have the body spray as well.

haveyourcakeandeatit · 19/11/2022 18:52

Love the bodyshop body butters, but I can't believe the cost of them now. £18 for a 200ml tub 🫤

😵😵 how much??!!!!

Fenjal smells gorgeous, reminds me of being in the Alps and saunas.
They have released a body spray that I've just bought. Available in Boots

susan12345678 · 19/11/2022 20:46

I also love the Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, it’s so light and fresh.

one of my teen Dds is a massive perfume connoisseur and is constantly discussing different scents. I know she really rates some of the Lush ones, but she dislikes Gucci Flora, I tend to agree - nice bottle but a cheap, cloying scent

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 20/11/2022 07:17

The lush solid perfumes are cheaper than the bottles. I have a few of them and they are a cheap way of getting something nice.

Pugsbladder · 20/11/2022 09:08

The latest version of Pledge surface polish smells wonderful & fresh.

lugeforlife · 20/11/2022 10:29

There are a lot of these on Amazon Black Friday I noticed. Saw Green Tea and Sunflowers as well as lots of JLo, SJP and Brittney.

If I was going to get one of these which was a sharp fruity smell (orange, sharp pineapple) what would be a good bet? SJP lovely doesn't work on me...

Are you wearing it as a perfume? 😦

Zara ones are great. I've been gifted a couple and will not be replacing my Chanel when it runs out!

I haven't got a Zara very near me so can't easily go and try, which not too overpowering Zara fragrances would you recommend for a 13 year old?

I buy a bottle of this every summer. It is beautifully green and fresh smelling but with incredible projection and longevity.

@Sparkletastic For years I've seen Grès de Cabotine on the shelves but have always ignored it. Your post stuck in my mind so when I saw it on Boxing Day I chanced it and bought a bottle online (i.e. blind/unsniffed). It arrived today. Turns out this was my great grandmother's perfume! I'm wearing it now and every time I catch a whiff I think of her perfectly coiffed hair and her soft powdery face and hugging her 😍
