Surprisingly great but cheap perfumes

I tested a New Look perfume, which was strategically displayed at the till yesterday and really liked it. I am certainly not their target customer (a couple of decades beyond)😂and I might actually go back to but it.

I find most perfumes way to overpowering and was surprised that this one was rather lovely. Which perfumes have you found in unexpected places?

All the Next ones and the aftershaves are great for men/ teenage boys too.

LadyB49 · 16/11/2022 16:18

For years I've been using Avon Rare Gold and always get compliments. About £10 off Amazon. I do have several 'good ' ones but always go back to this.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/11/2022 16:19

Rihanna's Rogue smells far more expensive than it had any right to.

Comedycook · 16/11/2022 16:23

I recommend the blog iscentyouaday for bargain perfume lists 👌

GirlInTheMirror27 · 16/11/2022 16:33

The suddenly range from Lidl smell amazing. I currently have the femelle one and love that one

SJP Lovely always gets me complimented

Me too! I have loved it since picking it up in a shop in Gibraltar some years ago when I'd forgotten my perfume and wanted something inexpensive. I always look out for the Christmas gift sets - they've got a nice one in B&M which I've put on my Xmas list.

PAFMO · 16/11/2022 16:36

The Superdrug Bloom range.

Any dupe of Jo Malones tbh as they are all as good as the "real" thing.

Yardley Jade if you can still get hold of it is very similar to Chanel Cristalle and Liz Earle 1.

Avon perfumes have always been excellent - back in the 70s they had world class perfumers working for them.

Some of the M&S and Zara ones are great.

singleone · 16/11/2022 16:39

Zara red temptation £19 and smells like baccarat rouge

Next cashmere is nice for every day

Melisande90 · 16/11/2022 17:06

Next - Paradise, Eau de Nude, Summer Sun
Zara - Deep Garden
Jenny Glow perfumes which are a dupe of Jo Malone

MissBattleaxe · 16/11/2022 17:17

This is my favourite subject! I've been blogging about perfume for ten years and I am evangelical when it comes to cheap champions. I agree with all the ones mentioned so far and would add the following:

-Avon Eve Prive - light, peachy floral for about £12
-Avon Eve Truth - aquatic floral that some prefer to Marc Jacobs Daisy!
-New Look Summer something that smells like Chloe and is under five quid
-Giorgio Beverly Hills Red - fabulous 80s flashback for about £12
-SJP Lovely as mentioned above
-Gres Cabotine as above
-Coty L'Aimant - very similar to Chanel No 5 and was originally made in 1927 but costs around £6
-Britney Midnight Fantasy - tropical fruity floral
-Avon Soft Musk £5
-Most Next and Zara perfumes are very good, especially the Jo Loves Zara Emotions range
-Elizabeth Arden Green Tea and all its flankers: great value for around a tenner for about 3 hours of pretty scent.
-Superdrug Atelier Artistique range, all good and often half price
-CK Obsession - I found a 15ml bottle for under £9 on Perfume Click.
-Yardley English Rose- sounds old fashioned but really goes for it in hot weather and is long lasting.

soberfabulous · 16/11/2022 17:26

You will prise my Britney fantasy (original and midnight versions!) out of my cold dead hands...it's absolutely gorgeous.

I'm 46, it feels wrong Grin

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 16/11/2022 17:29

Jessica Simpson's Fancy Nights (the name made me lol) often got mentioned as one of the best celeb scents but it seems to have been discontinued now.

Reggiebo · 16/11/2022 17:30

Bought some sjp lovely yesterday from Argos. £15 for 100mil. Love the stuff.

inthedeepshade · 16/11/2022 17:38

I absolutely adore Coty L'Aimant. I also love the 4711 Eau de Cologne which is usually next to it on the shelf! Makes me think of summer in the south of France.

mommatoone · 16/11/2022 17:39

As per previous posts - Zara perfumes are lovely. If you google Zara dupes it shows you what they smell like, but at a fraction of the price obviously!

JenniferBooth · 16/11/2022 17:39

New Look Dusk
Superdrug Artiscent Atelier Patchouli Passion.

Cotswoldmama · 16/11/2022 17:54

The Aldi dupes are amazing. I bought 'Guardian' a dupe for 'Angel' and it's so similar to the original and has really good projection and longevity, which a lot of dupes don't. I have also tried their dark blossom, which is a dupe for Black opium and that's really good too. I bought the dupe for Viktor and Rolf's Flower bomb, I can't remember the name that wasn't as good projection and longevity wise but smells good. I think they were £5.99 for 100ml. Aldis Jo Malone dupes are fab too.

The other perfume I love is Elizabeth Taylor's Emeralds and Diamonds it reminds me of Givenchy Amarige but is about £15 for 100ml.

lipstickwoman · 16/11/2022 17:57

Yardley Jade is very similar to Chanel Cristalle and less than a tenner.

SlippinKimmy · 16/11/2022 17:59

SJP’s perfumes are nice - Covet and Stash always get me compliments.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/11/2022 18:02

If you have an Other Stories shop near you, check out theirs.

Lovely smells. and beautiful packaging as well.

TinFoilHatty · 16/11/2022 18:04

ooh right whilst you're all here, does a good dupe for Dune exist?

whiteroseredrose · 16/11/2022 18:05

Eden Perfumes. Their Chanel 5 is very similar

Catslovepies · 16/11/2022 18:06

@MissBattleaxe I admire your expertise and totally agree with you about Yardley English Rose. It's a lovely and light scent that doesn't give me a headache like many perfumes do. I usually even spray some on my chest before I go to sleep as it's a very soothing and pleasant scent to drift off too. I actually introduced my mum to it and she loves it also. It's not a particularly complex scent - just simple but gorgeous, light, easy to wear and long-lasting
