The joy of socks

I've just been reading the washing thread, and the amount of people who suggested getting rid of unmatched socks and just having one style/ colour for each person in the house.
My life would be sadder if I had to wear grey socks every day.

Socks are an unsung hero in life- I'm momentarily a bit happier when I realise I'm wearing full length jeans that day so I can wear my green space socks, or my 3 year old realises I've got on my rainbow stripe socks so disappears off to find hers to match.

There is no point to this thread. Or maybe there is, actually- any recommendations on where I can get trainer socks that don't roll down your foot? But even if none appear, I felt socks got enough of a bashing that an appreciation post was warranted. I'm going to choose some happy socks today.

My happy socks are ones that wrinkle at the ankle, 80’s style.

Hollyhead · 05/11/2022 06:53

I’m with you, I love socks! I have wool blend cosy ones for downtime on the sofa, mad ones, more sophisticated patterned ones to wear with cropped trousers. Hip hip hooray for socks!

anon2022anon · 05/11/2022 06:55

@Hollyhead I'd be interested to see what you choose with cropped trousers? My socks are all...unsophisticated, I'm going to say 😁 (i.e. dinosaurs often feature)

@KangarooKenny I recently got some that ribbed around the ankle, like an American jock would wear with short shorts, but with added hearts on 😁

Love the title of this thread

I’ve always had plain black socks and needed to replace them so was hunting for more plain black ones. On a whim I bought a pair of bright multicoloured socks and they just make me feel happy when I put them on in the morning. Now I have a whole range of coloured socks and it’s kind of weird how much they add to my day!

Coniferhedge · 05/11/2022 07:17

I love socks. I’d love to be able to knit socks to make my own lovely unique pairs, but I can’t knit for toffee.

Ulysses · 05/11/2022 07:19

I’ve just splurged on cashmere socks from The White Company as I hate cold feet. If I’m honest though my Florence and Fred 100% polyester bed socks are just as cosy.

TeddyTrucks · 05/11/2022 07:26

Having size 9 feet I wish I could share the joy of all these colourful beautiful socks. Sadly it seems I either have to pay £10 per pair or buy men's socks, which are never as pretty...

AdventuringAway · 05/11/2022 07:29

I have a love/hate relationship with socks. Wide size 8 feet mean I can’t just pick up any and have them fit - they normally have to be mens size, and those have a tendency to be a) boring and b) too long at the ankle. Also I get really dry feet and some socks seem to make that feel worse. Joules mens bamboo socks are the best I’ve found recently!

Having said that, Next do “mesh trainer socks” which are fab and stay put (with a silicone bit on the heel). Their larger size is a 6-9 which I’ve not found in womens socks before.

princessbear80 · 05/11/2022 07:40

I love socks too. My favourite ever pair were some bamboo ones I bought at the shop at the Eden Project. They were teal with white hearts and pink toe, heel and top bit. Wore them to death and they sadly fell apart. Still miss them!

I have wide legs and have found gentle grip socks don’t give me that dug in mark around the bottom of my leg. But the patterns aren’t as fun!

Phrenologistsfinger · 05/11/2022 07:44

Yes, love a good sock! My favourite is Thought as bamboo/patterns/big size for my wide 7.5 feet and not tiny ankles…. I also got a nice ribbed green wooly pair in Monki recently.

TeaAndStrumpets · 05/11/2022 07:49

I have horribly cold feet so I wear socks all year round. I love knee length cotton ones in cheerful colours eg Pantherella, and I wear them with midi length skirts to they look like tights.

I have cashmere socks in winter, get some every birthday. I pamper them because they are bloody expensive so handwash every time they are worn. No way are they going in the washing machine!

KnickerlessParsons · 05/11/2022 07:50

My favourite song is about socks:

"Black socks, they never get dirty
The longer you wear them the stronger they get
Sometimes, I think I should wash them
But something inside me says no, no, not yet"

I love socks - particularly stripey ones.

flippinecknotagain · 05/11/2022 07:57

I love socks too! My favourite are a pair of orangey/ red that I knitted myself!

DeborahVance · 05/11/2022 07:57

I love socks too. Not pretty but the best socks I have at the moment are these from Community Clothing which have a cushioned sole. SO warm and comfy.

Piemam · 05/11/2022 08:02

@anon2022anon M&S multipack for the non-slip down variety of trainer socks. Doesn't matter if it's the set for a fiver or more, they are the best at staying put. Just tie your laces after and they should stay put.

Viform · 05/11/2022 08:07

My favourite socks are men’s bamboo brightly coloured ones from sock shop (although originally I got them from tkmaxx)

fab bright colours, super soft, warm but not sweaty - I’ll see if I can find a link

CuriousMariette · 05/11/2022 08:07

Great thread OP - wow - some of you are hardcore professional sock fans 😁. My current favourite are dark blue with gold glitter thread through them - give me a little smile everytime I wear them. Late DDog was also a sock lover I still have a huge tub of unmatched socks because of her.

LunaTheCat · 05/11/2022 08:10

Socks bring me joy too! I have a big collection for winter! I have started to get my rousers shortened to just slightly above my ankle so they are displayed.

flippinecknotagain · 05/11/2022 08:13

BAM bamboo socks are great too. I’ve already been asked to buy new ones for Xmas. The cushioned sole ones are favourites.
The family also like thought socks. Teen DS favourites are grey with fox’s on and DD ones with dog paw prints.
DDog is a sock lover too. Likes to run off with a half knitted sock for a game of bloody chase too!!

Giggorata · 05/11/2022 08:20

I started having brightly coloured mad patterned socks when DS 1 and 2 were at home, so they didn't get mixed up. No excuse now, just love them.

My favourites are my tie dyed socks and some hand knitted striped ones my friend did for me. She is a knitting genius and can knock out pair after pair, including turning the heels, whilst chatting or watching TV.

SpringSparrow · 05/11/2022 08:23

Aw lovely thread. Where are you all getting your lovely socks?I like socks too but mine always become singles , too many people and washing in this house. I have some cute woodland themed ones that were a pack from Next I think, little toadstool on the side.
@KnickerlessParsons that song made me laugh!
I can knit but don’t knit socks because I think I’d lose them.

AriettyHomily · 05/11/2022 08:34

I love socks! I'm a flip flop girl at heart and wear them for as long as possible but when the weather turns the socks make me feel better about it. I've got all sorts.

Interestingly one of my kids is the same and will never be without socks, ever. The other one hates them and will do everything to avoid wearing them!
