The joy of socks

I've just been reading the washing thread, and the amount of people who suggested getting rid of unmatched socks and just having one style/ colour for each person in the house.
My life would be sadder if I had to wear grey socks every day.

Socks are an unsung hero in life- I'm momentarily a bit happier when I realise I'm wearing full length jeans that day so I can wear my green space socks, or my 3 year old realises I've got on my rainbow stripe socks so disappears off to find hers to match.

There is no point to this thread. Or maybe there is, actually- any recommendations on where I can get trainer socks that don't roll down your foot? But even if none appear, I felt socks got enough of a bashing that an appreciation post was warranted. I'm going to choose some happy socks today.

Another giant footed women here. I like woolly falling down socks, hate anything tight and have to use a weird aid pulling thing to get them on. I have loved looking at the links, but I kind of need to see pictures of them on, it doesn’t work for me if they are tightly cuffed.
My all time favourites are fancy hand knitted dark pink ones my daughter made for herself, but they were too big, my gain!
Last year I treated myself to some cashmere socks from Celtic and co. Dh threw them in a normal wash and they died after 1 wear. Somehow I forgave him, but there were tears.I have just bought some lovely mens dark grey and mustard fairisle socks in John Lewis.£15.00 tho.
We too have a sock loving dog, It helps keep me tidy, not letting him bury my treasures in the garden.

Can anyone help me with suggestions for socks that don't have uncomfortable seams or patterns underneath that come in a small size? I am size 3, so standard ladies size 4 - 8 are enormous on me.

These children's smooth seam socks come in black and coloured stripes and there is a size 12.5 to 3.5:

5 PAIRS FOR £4.99

I also have small feet and women's socks are usually too long to start with, but often shrink to a better fit for me after a few washes if they are mostly cotton. I've just seen parrot socks and toucan socks and I want them.

GreyhairedHobbit · 05/11/2022 16:41

Simple hand knitted socks. These are called bullfinch and the yarn creates the pattern.

@mandolinwind Thank you so much! I've just ordered some of the ones you linked xx

I love socks. For Autumn, Winter and early Spring, give me cashmere or wool mix socks (pure wool tend to become baggy or thin at the heels too quickly. This year I discovered Nordic Mountain (not classic) Socks. Very cosy. I’m wearing them right now. I did find from my experience with the first pair I wore that I needed to wash them inside out before wearing though, as something in them (probably in the wool) irritated my skin. Totally sorted by washing though. www.thenordicsocks.co.uk/collections/mountain-collection/products/ida-5-pairs

Having size 9 feet I wish I could share the joy of all these colourful beautiful socks. Sadly it seems I either have to pay £10 per pair or buy men's socks, which are never as pretty...

@TeddyTrucks oh that's pretty annoying!! I have the opposite problem, but at least I get to buy childrens socks. But I can't wear adult socks, so none of the 'nice' ones. I'm also between sizes for kids socks, so sometimes too big and occasionally to small. I love socks, but hate buying them!!

I do knit/crochet, but couldn't wear k/c socks as I like them close fitting, not slouchy.

The Bradford Sock Company also do lovely wool mix socks in different thicknesses:

These look amazing!

LoobyDop · 06/11/2022 11:59

BAM trainer socks have a little padded bit at the back which stops them from slipping down, and come in lots of bright colours. I also like their patterned and stripy ankle socks, and have gradually replaced all my other socks with them. I agree with you OP, life in black socks would be a little bit crapper.

GreyhairedHobbit · 06/11/2022 14:09

@TeddyTrucks you need to use a smaller needle to get a closer fitting sock. I use a 2mm needle for a lovely firm fabric

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/11/2022 14:27

O wow, the Bradford Socks rock my boxes of being good socks, smallish business and local!

Hollyhead · 07/11/2022 06:59

@anon2022anon sorry I didn’t reply I’ve only just come back to this thread! With cropped trousers I choose a background colour similar to the trouser and then a subtle pattern (often with a bit of sparkle) my favourite pair are a dark teal with a gold and black small leopard print on.

FloorCushion · 07/11/2022 08:02

Lovely thread OP.

I have to wear boring black socks for work, but one of my simple joys in life is coming home, taking my uniform and bra off and putting some
lovely soft warm socks on and then feet into my slippers.

envious of folk who get to wear fun socks to work.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 07/11/2022 08:45

I bloody love fun jolly socks. I have lots of patterned knee high ones for horse riding and I bloody love them!

Stripes, spots, argyle pattern, ones with horses galloping around them, ones with snow flakes or hearts.

Knee socks are a massive thing in the horse world.

I like loud socks in the rest of my life too. Bright warm ones for round the house, and a variety for day to day depending how visible they will be. I started DH on patterned socks rather than boring plain ones too, may as well have something cheerful.

I always remember a female teacher at my school who always wore bright socks to match her sweater, and had them visible. It was such a bold personal style statement. Not remotely fashionable, just her wearing what she liked (and was warm and comfy I guess).

For trainer socks, Primark are best. The little low cut footsie ones are best but not very warm.

Pairs

I have no connection with the company, other than I'm planning on buying some after reading a Lisa Armstrong column in the Daily Torygraph

AnnieSnap · 07/11/2022 14:51

@KirstenBlest Just checking out ‘Pairs’. They look lovely, but the website says nothing about animal welfare. I have only fairly recently learned that much wool and related fibres are obtained using cruel methods. Many retailers now make a point of stating that their materials are obtained without using those methods. I have emailed them to ask their position on this. I’ll report back when I receive a reply.

AnnieSnap · 07/11/2022 15:15

I received a very fast reply from ‘Pairs’ with this link. They seem a good company. I have ordered a pair of mohair socks and they are giving a pair of free Lambswool bed socks (usual cost £20) with any order right now!

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2022 15:22

@AnnieSnap , wool is not obtained from cruel practices.
It's fibres like angora that can be dodgy.
Shearing is beneficial to the sheep.

hoorayandupsherises · 07/11/2022 15:57

I have a lot of socks with horses and dogs on and they make me very happy.

Merino socks make my almost-always-cold feet very happy.

Probably more environmentally friendly than a lot of other fibres, whether natural or artificial?

WanderingSouls · 07/11/2022 15:59

Currently wearing BAM bamboo socks which are excellent, they do men's sizes in lovely colours as well as women's and they occasionally send you a free pair as a surprise 😁

Confusedandtired2022 · 07/11/2022 16:02

Hype trainer socks are the best I’ve found for staying put, and so comfy! They’re the only ones I buy now.

Shitfather · 07/11/2022 17:21

I have some utterly gorgeous socks in various colours. They can really finish off a casual outfit beautifully. Calzedonia do unusual socks.

MarbleParched · 07/11/2022 18:38

Another sock lover here!

For cropped work trousers with loafers/ brogues I always turn to my trusty Burlington Argyles, I have them in a number of bright colour ways and they make me immensely happy!

I’m wearing a shades of red pair today even though I’m off work this week!

Shearing is beneficial to the sheep.

It’s not the shearing that I have concerns about though. It’s mulesing and brutality toward sheep whilst being sheared in some parts of the industry in some countries. Retailers are aware of this and some take steps to avoid sourcing materials from there. merinowoolgear.com/what-is-mulesing/
