The joy of socks

I've just been reading the washing thread, and the amount of people who suggested getting rid of unmatched socks and just having one style/ colour for each person in the house.
My life would be sadder if I had to wear grey socks every day.

Socks are an unsung hero in life- I'm momentarily a bit happier when I realise I'm wearing full length jeans that day so I can wear my green space socks, or my 3 year old realises I've got on my rainbow stripe socks so disappears off to find hers to match.

There is no point to this thread. Or maybe there is, actually- any recommendations on where I can get trainer socks that don't roll down your foot? But even if none appear, I felt socks got enough of a bashing that an appreciation post was warranted. I'm going to choose some happy socks today.

I love socks!! It takes practically tropical weather for me to not wear them. They bring a little bit of delight to putting washing away, pairing up the socks. Wearing a fun pair on a sensible work day, Christmas socks 🎄🎄 both at Christmas and slightly rebelliously in April 😂

DoctorAcula · 05/11/2022 10:03

I've fallen in love with socks again now I have the bamboo socks from sockshop. Warm, comfortable but they take an age to dry.

WashAsDelicates · 05/11/2022 10:03

These are the solution to machine-eaten/matching/identifying owners:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000Z3BL4G?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

And/or

amzn.eu/d/av69rlK

And/or anything similar.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2022 10:04

OP the solution to this problem is for you to keep your socks and everyone else have matching socks.

Yes. DH bought himself about 3 weeks worth of identical black socks, so we have a wool cycle 'sock wash' every fortnight or so (other things that are better done with no bio on thr wool cycle can go in too). They just get stuffed back into his drawer, no need for pairing.

Otoh I've got various styles and colours. My bugbears are that I want some smart navy ones and some cosy grey marl but never seem to see those. I walk a lot so my favourites are various types of Bridgedales.

Tintackedsea · 05/11/2022 10:14

BAM for bamboo socks. I've just spent loads of money on buying heaps because my cheapo supermarket ones were totally threadbare and done. They make me very happy.

WellTidy · 05/11/2022 10:28

BAM ones slip down my leg and bunch. DH has joules bamboo ones that he likes.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/11/2022 10:32

@JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue
me too, I have had to throw away perfect good socks because of the toe seam. All the jovial ones have a big ridge

Virtually all my socks are Falke sensitive, although I wish they did individual sizes. My feet are 38, so the the 35/38 are o. The small side , and the 39+ float.

they used to offer bright colours , but they seem to have retreated to black, navy and beige now😪

Penguinsaregreat · 05/11/2022 10:38

I remember moving house several years ago and throwing away umpteen odd socks. Yes they might have been the same colour but they were clearly not a pair and after tolerating them for far too long I decided they had to go.
Is there some sort of odd sock heaven? Where do these socks go? You buy a pair wad them together and then what?
I could never spend a lot on socks much as I would like to, I can’t trust the buggers.

DH had some bamboo socks he loves but they are always the last things left out on the line, even after towels and jeans.

CheshireCats · 05/11/2022 10:47

Can anyone help me with suggestions for socks that don't have uncomfortable seams or patterns underneath that come in a small size? I am size 3, so standard ladies size 4 - 8 are enormous on me.

anon2022anon · 05/11/2022 10:49

@spiderontheceiling I buy all the joyful socks for everyone in the house that allows it! toddler has every bright colour that I can find, DP has socks with doughnuts and cereal and stars, while teenage DD has a boring drawer of white trainer socks 😁 ironically, hers are the hardest to match, as they are all slightly different, so hers just get thrown in a drawer. Whereas everyone else's are pretty easy to find, or we have a 'department of lost socks' bag where the random ones go until they turn up or get thrown.

Having size 9 feet I wish I could share the joy of all these colourful beautiful socks. Sadly it seems I either have to pay £10 per pair or buy men's socks, which are never as pretty...

TKMaxx have men's Happy Socks which are colourful or patterned or have pictures on. I love them!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/11/2022 11:21

I have found my tribe! @TeddyTrucks I'm also a 9, there are plenty of good men's socks out there. BAM, Thought, Happy Socks, even Next, M&S and Sainsbury's have some colourful offerings ruin time to time.

I was at a seminar in Greenwich earlier this week. I was very excited to be staying close to a Happy Socks shop (didn't know they existed!). Sadly I never managed to get to it when it was open ☹️.

Today I am wearing a pair of big thick old mountaineering socks, left over from my youth of daring do. Wool rich, navy and beige boucle. Nothing special to look at, but super warm after my (outdoor) swim this morning. I hade a huge drawer full of socks for all moods and all occasions. Bring a chunky size 16, with big feet, it's sometimes difficult to get clothes and shoes that fit well. Not so with socks.

Chasingsquirrels · 05/11/2022 11:53

Today's socks.

I dislike most things about cold weather, but I do like my socks.

The Bradford Sock Company also do lovely wool mix socks in different thicknesses:

This sock thread has brought me luck. I commented earlier about my love of socks, and then in the post today I received a free pair of socks from BAM!! 😃 (I recommend signing up to their mailing list).

Alas, they look very narrow and won’t be comfy for me. So @anon2022anon if you’d like them please message me your address and I post them to you!

unwillingantisocial · 05/11/2022 13:07

Saaaaame!! I love socks.

KateBalesCardi · 05/11/2022 13:09

Matalan's trainer socks are the best, they don't roll down. I can't wait for Christmas, last year DSD bought me a basket full of socks, all different colours and patterns and I was ridiculously happy so I'm hoping she does the same again this year Grin

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/11/2022 13:12

I am happy at your sock joy

But honestly as the world’s least organised person (TM) never having to pair socks has brought me much joy. I have two bright colours. And I fling them in the draw in a jolly heap, knowing there will always be a pair. It’s brill. But if I was a different sort of person I am sure I would have lots of different patterns.

anon2022anon · 05/11/2022 06:55

@Hollyhead I'd be interested to see what you choose with cropped trousers? My socks are all...unsophisticated, I'm going to say 😁 (i.e. dinosaurs often feature)

Need Dino socks, wherefore you getting them from please?

LaMadrilena · 05/11/2022 13:24

I LOVE socks. I don't wear them over summer as it's too hot here, but the first day of the year it's cold enough to wear them is officially designated Sock Day and is cause for celebration.

My favourite pairs have been:

"Does my bum look big in this?" (Topshop I think, some 20 years ago)
Sausage dogs (Happy Feet)
Eat my socks (Flying Tiger Copenhagen)
Thigh-high stripy ones with toes when I was a student (no idea where from)

I just love socks.

MenaiMna · 05/11/2022 13:26

My DN has membership in a sock of the month club. A quirky new pair every month. There are a few in UK eg sockgeeks

anon2022anon · 05/11/2022 13:34

@princessbear80 that's very kind, thank you- I was actually on their website this week, debating, so it would be lovely to try some! And I will happily cover postage 😊

anon2022anon · 05/11/2022 13:38

@MenaiMna my newest ones are from Primark, but I also have new look ones
